Master Builders Solutions MasterMatrix
Rheology-control admixtures that keep flowing, pumped and self-consolidating concrete cohesive — cutting segregation and bleed without giving up workability.
What is it?
A dedicated family of viscosity-modifying admixtures (VMAs) built on water-soluble synthetic copolymer chemistry — cellulose-based in the underwater grade — that thickens the paste phase of concrete just enough to hold aggregate and fines in suspension.
Where is it used?
Self-consolidating concrete (SCC), precast and prestressed elements, RMC mixes run on manufactured/M-sand, high-rise pumped concrete, low-slump paving and extrusion, and underwater or tremie concreting.
Why use it?
Lets a mix designer chase higher flow or pumpability without the concrete falling apart in transit — it suppresses segregation, controls bleeding and keeps a fluid mix stable from batching plant to final set.
How is it applied?
Dosed as a liquid at the RMC batching plant or precast batcher alongside the primary superplasticizer, with grade and dosage fixed by trial mix for the specific cementitious content, aggregate grading and target slump/flow.
About Master Builders Solutions MasterMatrix
River-sand scarcity and NGT-driven mining curbs have pushed most Delhi NCR ready-mix plants onto manufactured or gap-graded sand, and that shift exposes a real weakness in plasticizer-only mix design: push the slump up with a PCE superplasticizer alone and an M-sand mix can bleed, segregate on a long pump lift, or leave honeycombed edges on a congested-rebar pour. A viscosity-modifying admixture (VMA) is the corrective layer — it doesn’t reduce water demand like a plasticizer, it manages how the paste holds onto its aggregate once the mix is already fluid.
MasterMatrix is Master Builders Solutions’ dedicated VMA range, carrying forward rheology-control know-how the business built up under the earlier BASF Construction Chemicals RHEOMAC-era admixture lines before the 2020 rebrand. It isn’t a single product but a family of grades pointed at different placement problems: MasterMatrix 33 for low-slump paving and extrusion, MasterMatrix VMA 358/362/450 for self-consolidating and pumped RMC work, and MasterMatrix UW 450 — a cellulose-based, anti-washout formulation — for underwater and tremie concreting. Space Arc supplies and helps trial-mix the grade that actually matches the job, rather than pushing one general-purpose VMA at every site.
The technical insight
The general-purpose MasterMatrix grades are water-soluble synthetic copolymers that dissolve into the mix water and form molecular entanglements — effectively raising the water phase’s own viscosity. That’s a different lever from adding cement or fines: it lifts the mix’s plastic viscosity (its resistance to internal movement of aggregate) without proportionally raising yield stress, so a concrete can stay flowable enough for SCC or pumping while still holding coarse aggregate in suspension instead of settling out. The general-purpose range is tested to ASTM C494/C494M Type S (Specific Performance Admixtures). MasterMatrix UW 450 works on a different, cellulose-based chemistry suited to underwater placement — it resists cement/fines washout and slows external water ingress into fresh concrete, and it’s tested to CRD-C 661-06, the US Army Corps of Engineers specification for anti-washout admixtures.
Where it is used
- Self-consolidating concrete (SCC) for congested reinforcement and architectural exposed-finish pours
- Precast and prestressed elements needing consistent, blemish-free fill without honeycombing
- RMC mix designs built around manufactured/M-sand or gap-graded aggregate, common across Delhi NCR plants
- High-rise pumped concrete on long vertical lifts, where segregation risk rises with pump distance
- Underwater and tremie concreting — piling, diaphragm walls and river-bridge substructure work (MasterMatrix UW 450)
- Low-slump paving, kerb extrusion and slipform work needing better edge stability (MasterMatrix 33)
- Pervious/no-fines concrete where paste stability keeps the open aggregate structure intact
- Self-consolidating grout for post-tensioning ducts and machine-base or bearing-plate grouting
Key advantages
- Cuts segregation and bleeding in high-slump and SCC mixes without leaning on extra cement or fines
- Keeps manufactured/M-sand and gap-graded aggregate mixes cohesive despite grading variability
- Improves surface finish on architectural and precast work — fewer bugholes, less honeycombing
- Works alongside PCE superplasticizers such as MasterGlenium to fine-tune rheology rather than replace them
- Underwater grade (UW 450) cuts washout losses and dewatering costs on marine and piling work
- Paving grade (MasterMatrix 33) lifts extrusion rate and finish quality on slipform work
- Backed by recognised third-party standards — ASTM C494 Type S, and CRD-C 661-06 for the underwater grade
- A graded product family means the right chemistry for the right placement problem, not one compromise formulation
Limitations & considerations
- Grade selection matters — a general SCC-grade VMA will not deliver the anti-washout performance of MasterMatrix UW 450 underwater
- Dosage is trial-mix specific to local cement, aggregate and whatever primary admixture is already in the mix, not a fixed universal rate
- Overdosing stiffens the mix and can hurt pumpability and finishing time, so site trials before a full-scale pour are non-negotiable
- A VMA corrects rheology — it does not fix a poorly proportioned mix design or the wrong water-cement ratio
- Published dosage and specific-gravity figures for the India range are limited online; final numbers come from the manufacturer’s grade-specific TDS and local technical service, not a generic spec sheet
- Technical support depth still varies by city outside the major RMC hubs, so trial-mix lead time needs to be built into the schedule
Selection & best practice
Never dose MasterMatrix off a generic rate — run a trial mix with the actual site cement, aggregate (especially the M-sand or gap-graded source in use) and the primary superplasticizer already selected, and match the grade to the real challenge: VMA 358/362/450 for SCC or pumping, MasterMatrix 33 for paving/extrusion, UW 450 for underwater work. Add it at the batching point the manufacturer’s TDS specifies, typically after the primary plasticizer has let the mix down, and check slump-flow, segregation resistance and T500 (per IS 16714 or comparable SCC acceptance checks) on the trial batch before committing to full production. Store it like any liquid admixture — sealed, away from direct sun and freezing temperatures, agitated before use if it has sat for a while — and keep the manufacturer’s technical service involved for at least the first few loads on any new mix design.

How we position Master Builders Solutions MasterMatrix
MasterMatrix sits inside Master Builders Solutions’ broader rheology-management portfolio, typically specified alongside MasterGlenium PCE superplasticizers (which handle water reduction and base workability) with MasterMatrix layered in specifically to manage segregation and bleeding once flow targets get aggressive — the two are complementary, not competing, line items on a mix design. Indian specifiers who worked with the pre-2020 BASF Construction Chemicals naming will recognise this as the successor to the old RHEOMAC-era rheology-control chemistry. On the Fosroc side, Space Arc’s current catalogue doesn’t carry a dedicated stand-alone VMA or anti-washout product that genuinely matches MasterMatrix’s function — Fosroc’s Structuro SCC range approaches flowable-concrete stability from a different angle rather than as an add-on rheology modifier — so for a project that specifically needs viscosity/segregation control or underwater anti-washout performance, MasterMatrix remains the more direct fit in Space Arc’s current line-up.
