MC-Bauchemie Centrament Retard
A chloride-free set-retarding admixture from MC-Bauchemie that buys back the working time hot weather and long transit steal from your concrete.
What is it?
A liquid set-retarding concrete admixture from MC-Bauchemie that delays the onset of cement hydration, keeping fresh concrete workable for longer without sacrificing 28-day strength.
Where is it used?
Ready-mixed concrete travelling long distances through city traffic, hot-weather pours, large monolithic rafts, and mass or precast sections where controlled setting is essential.
Why use it?
It holds slump and delays initial set during summer casting and long hauls, so concrete arrives placeable, avoids cold joints in continuous pours, and lowers early thermal cracking risk in thick sections.
How is it applied?
Dosed as a percentage by mass of cement and added at the batching plant with the mix water or after the other constituents; the exact rate is fixed by a site trial mix for the required delay.
About MC-Bauchemie Centrament Retard
MC-Bauchemie Centrament Retard is a ready-to-use liquid admixture that gives site teams direct control over how quickly concrete stiffens and sets. On a normal spring or summer day in North India, ambient temperatures push cement hydration along faster than a placing crew can keep up with — slump drops in the truck, the leading edge of a pour starts to skin over before the next layer arrives, and what should have been a monolithic slab ends up carrying cold joints. Centrament Retard extends the window between mixing and initial set, so the concrete that leaves the plant is still fully workable when it reaches the pump and the mould.
Because it is a genuine chemical retarder rather than a water-holding gimmick, it works with your mix design instead of fighting it. It is free of chloride and other corrosion-promoting components, which keeps it compatible with reinforced and prestressed work, and it plays cleanly alongside MC-Bauchemie’s Centrament superplasticiser and air-entraining ranges when a job needs water reduction or freeze-thaw durability on top of extended setting time. The retardation is dose-dependent and predictable: more admixture buys more delay, and the effect is confirmed by trial mix rather than guessed, so a batching plant can dial in a consistent, repeatable result across a season.
The technical insight
Cement sets because tricalcium silicate and tricalcium aluminate in the clinker react rapidly with water, and a retarder works by getting in the way of that first reaction. The active molecules in Centrament Retard adsorb onto the surface of the freshly wetted cement grains and onto the earliest hydration products, forming a thin temporary barrier that slows the dissolution of the clinker and delays the point at which crystals begin to knit together and stiffen the paste. Crucially, this is a delay and not a suppression — once the barrier is overcome the normal hydration sequence resumes, which is why properly dosed retarded concrete reaches the same or marginally higher 28-day strength as an unretarded control at the same water-cement ratio. Any small dip in 1-day or 3-day strength is simply the clock having been reset and is immaterial to a structure designed on 28-day characteristic strength. The length of the delay scales with dosage, but its intensity is temperature-sensitive: retarders act less strongly as concrete gets hotter, so the same dose that buys three hours on a mild morning may buy noticeably less at peak afternoon heat — which is exactly why the working dose is fixed against the cement, aggregates and site temperatures that will actually be used.
Where it is used
- Ready-mixed concrete despatched on long hauls through congested urban routes, where transit and waiting time at site would otherwise cost workability
- Hot-weather concreting of rafts, slabs and foundations through the North Indian spring and summer
- Large monolithic pours that must stay live between successive truckloads to avoid cold joints
- Mass concrete in abutments, pier caps, pile caps and thick sections, where slower heat build-up reduces early thermal cracking
- Slip-form and continuously placed elements that depend on a stable, extended setting profile
- Precast and pre-stressed summer production where a controlled set improves finishing and handling windows
- Pumped concrete over long delivery lines or to height, where retained plasticity keeps the line clear
- Combined use with a Centrament superplasticiser where a job needs both water reduction and extended open time
Key advantages
- Chloride-free and free of corrosion-promoting components, so it is safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
- Extends initial setting time and holds workability during hot weather and long transit
- Delay is proportional to dosage, giving batching plants a predictable, repeatable control lever
- No penalty to final strength — 28-day strength matches or slightly exceeds an unretarded control
- Reduces the risk of cold joints in continuous and mass pours by keeping the concrete live for longer
- Slows early heat evolution in thick sections, lowering the chance of early thermal cracking
- Compatible with the wider Centrament superplasticiser and air-entraining range for tailored mix designs
- Supplied ready to use as a liquid that meters accurately into the mix water at the plant
Limitations & considerations
- It retards setting but does not, on its own, provide the water reduction or slump retention of a superplasticiser — pair it with a PCE where high workability is needed
- Retarding power falls as concrete temperature rises, so very hot mixes need dosage confirmed by trial, not carried over from cooler days
- Overdosing can extend set far beyond intention and depress early strength gain, delaying formwork striking and finishing
- Effectiveness varies with cement type, source and mix; every working dose must be established by a site trial mix rather than assumed
- It manages setting time, not the underlying causes of heat in very large pours — mass concrete may still need supplementary thermal-control measures
- Correct set timing depends on accurate batching-plant dosing; hand-dosing on site risks inconsistent results across loads
Selection & best practice
Fix the working dose by trial mix using the actual cement, aggregates and expected site temperatures before the pour, rather than adopting a figure from another job or cooler season. Add Centrament Retard at the batching plant, metered into the mix water or after the other constituents are combined, and never simply tip it onto dry cement. Keep it within the tested percentage-by-mass-of-cement band; treat higher dosages as a deliberate decision to extend delay, not a routine top-up, since overdosing pushes back striking and finishing. Where the same pour also needs high workability or water reduction, run the retarder alongside a Centrament superplasticiser as a designed combination and confirm the pair in trial rather than adding them independently on the day. Store the drums sealed in shade between roughly 5 and 35 degrees Celsius, protect from freezing, and use within the stated shelf life; stir or agitate if the material has stood. On hot afternoons, plan for the retarder to act less strongly than it did in the morning and adjust despatch timing accordingly.

Industry use cases
Ready-Mixed Concrete Plants
Keeps concrete placeable through long city hauls and queuing at site, reducing rejected loads and cold-joint risk during the summer months.
Infrastructure & Bridges
Extends open time in pier caps, abutments and pile caps so large sections can be poured monolithically without construction joints.
High-Rise & Commercial Rafts
Holds workability on big raft and transfer-slab pours that run for hours, letting successive truckloads knit together cleanly.
Precast & Prestressed Yards
Gives a controlled, repeatable set in hot-weather production, widening finishing and demoulding windows on the casting bed.
Mass & Hydraulic Concrete
Slows early heat build-up in thick, low-surface-area sections, easing early thermal-cracking risk in dams, foundations and water-retaining work.

How we position MC-Bauchemie Centrament Retard
Within the MC-Bauchemie range, Centrament Retard is the pure set-retarding member of the Centrament admixture family and is designed to work alongside the Centrament Flow / PCE superplasticisers when a mix needs water reduction and workability retention as well as delayed set, and with the Centrament Air air-entraining admixtures where freeze-thaw or cohesion improvement is required. Space Arc also supplies equivalent hot-weather retarding admixtures across the other brands we distribute, so specifiers standardised on Fosroc, Sika or Master Builders Solutions can be matched to the retarder within their preferred system rather than switching families.
Fosroc Conplast RP264 — Choose the Fosroc option when a specifier wants a single chloride-free admixture that both reduces water and retards set (IS 9103 / ASTM C494 Type B and D) rather than a dedicated pure retarder, or when the project is already standardised on the Fosroc Conplast system.
