BrandMC-BauchemieCategoryGrouts & AnchorsFormA ready-to-use, hydraulically setting cementitious grout with dual-shrinkage compensation (to ASTM C-1107 Grade C)…

What is it?

A ready-to-use, hydraulically setting cementitious grout with dual-shrinkage compensation (to ASTM C-1107 Grade C), supplied as a chloride-free grey powder that needs only water on site.

Where is it used?

Machine and generator foundations, wind turbine bases, bridge and flyover bearings, crane rails, precast-to-in-situ joints, and anchor-bolt/base-plate grouting.

Why use it?

It reaches 25 N/mm² in 24 hours and 70 N/mm² at 28 days (ASTM C109), carries EN 1504-6 anchoring-product certification, and its dual-shrinkage compensation keeps it in full contact with the base plate long after an ordinary non-shrink grout would have pulled back — so vibrating machinery stays aligned.

How is it applied?

Mixed with water only (3.6-3.75 L per 30 kg bag, added in two stages) in a mechanical mixer, then poured continuously from one side through rigid, leak-proof formwork; single-pour grouting height ranges 15-120 mm, with de-moulding typically possible around 24 hours later.

About MC-Bauchemie Emcekrete 70DS

Any rotating or reciprocating machine — a compressor, a generator set, a turbine, a crane rail — transmits vibration into its base plate every second it runs. The gap between that base plate and the concrete foundation has to be filled with something that bonds fully, resists that constant micro-movement, and doesn’t shrink away from the steel over the following months, because a grout that pulls back even half a millimetre turns into a void, and a void under a loaded machine base becomes a rocking, misaligned, noisy problem within a year. That’s the specific job cementitious precision grouts are built for, and it’s a different job from filling a crack or patching a slab — hence a separate “grouts & anchors” category rather than treating it as generic concrete repair.

Emcekrete 70DS is MC-Bauchemie’s answer for exactly this: a ready-to-use, hydraulically setting cementitious grout with dual-shrinkage compensation, certified as an anchoring product to EN 1504-6 and built to ASTM C-1107 Grade C shrinkage-compensation criteria. It ships as a chloride-free grey powder in 30 kg sacks, needs nothing but water and a mechanical mixer on site, and is rated for grouting heights from 15 mm up to 120 mm in a single pour — wide enough to cover most machine-base, bearing and precast-joint gaps an Indian contractor will actually hit. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Emcekrete 70DS across Delhi NCR and pan-India project sites, and because it’s a technical, batch-critical pour (mixing sequence and pour rate genuinely change the outcome), we generally recommend it go in with our applicator team rather than being handed to a general mason crew.

The technical insight

The feature that separates Emcekrete 70DS from a generic non-shrink grout is the dual-shrinkage-compensation mechanism itself, and it’s worth understanding what the two numbers on the datasheet actually mean. “Early expansion” of 1.0-1.5% (measured per ASTM C940) happens while the grout is still plastic, in the first hours after pouring — it counteracts the plastic shrinkage that would otherwise pull the fresh grout away from the underside of the base plate before it has any strength to resist that pull. The second figure, a much smaller 0.07% expansion measured per ASTM C157 at 28 days, is the long-term, hardened-state compensation that keeps the cured grout from drying-shrinking back into a gap over the following weeks. Between them, that’s what ASTM C-1107 Grade C actually certifies — not just “doesn’t shrink,” but a controlled expansion-then-stabilise curve engineered for load-bearing contact.

The two flow figures on the datasheet (≥550 mm per EN 13395-2, a flow-cone test, versus ≥250 mm per EN 445’s grout-spread table method) aren’t a contradiction — they’re two different European test rigs measuring the same fluid consistency, and both are quoted because different specifiers/inspectors on Indian job sites are trained on one or the other. Practically, what that flow class buys the site is a grout that self-levels and self-compacts under a base plate purely by gravity and hydrostatic head, without needing a poker vibrator that would risk disturbing the alignment shims. The 0-3 mm graded aggregate (per IS 4031 Part 1) is what allows that flow at a comparatively low 12-12.5% water-powder ratio — a neat, unfilled grout would need much more water to flow the same distance, and that extra water is exactly what causes bleeding, segregation, and strength loss in cheaper grouts.

Where it is used

  • Machine, compressor and generator foundation grouting where continuous vibration would fatigue an ordinary grout
  • Wind turbine tower base-ring and nacelle-support foundation grouting
  • Bridge and flyover bearing pedestal grouting
  • Crane rail and gantry-rail grouting at ports, warehouses and steel plants
  • Grouting rigid joints between precast elements, and between precast elements and in-situ concrete
  • Anchor-bolt pocket and structural steel base-plate grouting for columns and equipment skids
  • Re-grouting machine foundations during a shutdown/overhaul where fast return-to-service matters
  • Grouting under bedplates for pumps, blowers and rotating equipment in process plants

Key advantages

  • High early strength — 25 N/mm² inside 24 hours (ASTM C109) — so alignment bolts can typically be tensioned and light commissioning can proceed the next day instead of losing 3-4 days to a slow-curing grout
  • Dual-shrinkage compensation: controlled early expansion (1.0-1.5% per ASTM C940) offsets plastic shrinkage while a small, separately-measured 28-day expansion (0.07% per ASTM C157) keeps the grout in full contact with the base plate over the long term
  • Good pourability at a genuinely low water-powder ratio (12-12.5%), which keeps bleeding and segregation down without needing a superplasticiser dosed on site
  • EN 1504-6 anchoring-product certification gives specifiers a recognised standard to cite in tender documents, not just a manufacturer’s claim
  • Chloride-free formulation protects anchor bolts and any embedded steel from corrosion — important for machine bases that stay wet from cooling-water drips or monsoon splash-back
  • Single product covers the 15-120 mm grouting-height range, so one bag spec handles most base-plate gaps without switching products mid-project
  • Documented resistance to dynamic/vibration loading, which is the actual failure mode for ordinary non-shrink grout under running machinery
  • Ready-mix simplicity — water only, no separate additive to meter — reduces the chance of a site batching error changing the strength class

Limitations & considerations

  • It’s a ready-mix powder that needs proper mechanical mixing in the stated two-stage water sequence — hand-mixing or dumping all the water at once tends to give poor flow and trapped air
  • Single-pour grouting height tops out at 120 mm; deeper gaps need a staged pour or a different, purpose-built deep-pour grout
  • Working (application) time shrinks to about 30 minutes at 35°C, which is a real constraint on a peak-summer NCR site and demands disciplined, fast batching
  • Shelf life is 6 months unopened, so bags sitting in a humid coastal godown or through an extended monsoon storage period need active stock rotation
  • Performance depends on rigid, leak-proof formwork with the correct 50-70 mm shoulder length — it’s a workmanship-sensitive pour, not a forgiving one
  • It’s a precision grouting mortar, not a structural concrete repair mortar or a chemical anchor — it shouldn’t be substituted for deep patch repairs or bonded rebar anchoring

Selection & best practice

Treat the mixing sequence as non-negotiable: add roughly 75% of the water first, mix 2-3 minutes, then the remaining 25% and mix a further 2 minutes — this is what gets the flow and workability the datasheet promises, and skipping straight to full water upfront gives a lumpier, lower-flow mix. Use ~25°C mixing water and a mechanical mixer, not a hand paddle. Saturate the substrate for 24 hours before pouring so it doesn’t pull water out of the grout, and build rigid, leak-proof formwork with a 50-70 mm shoulder. Pour continuously from one side — never from both ends toward the middle — to avoid trapping air, and for larger base plates, feed from the centre through a pipe or funnel. In Delhi-NCR summer conditions, remember the working time drops to roughly 30 minutes at 35°C versus 60 minutes at 5°C, so batch small and pour fast; keep bags out of direct sun before mixing. Avoid vibration or shock near the grout for the first several hours, and if the exposed grout edges will see strong sun or wind after de-moulding (~24 hours), protect them with a curing compound.

Frequently asked questions

How is Emcekrete 70DS different from an ordinary non-shrink grout?
Most non-shrink grouts only claim zero shrinkage. Emcekrete 70DS goes a step further with dual-shrinkage compensation — a small early expansion that offsets plastic shrinkage while it’s still setting, plus a separately tested, much smaller expansion at 28 days — so it stays in full, tight contact with the base plate rather than merely ‘not shrinking’.
Can we pour it for a 100 mm gap under a compressor skid in one go?
Yes — the datasheet rates it for grouting heights from 15 mm up to 120 mm in a single continuous pour, which covers a 100 mm gap comfortably, provided the formwork and pour method follow MC’s application notes.
How soon can the machine be aligned and bolted down after grouting?
The grout is generally de-mouldable around 24 hours after pouring, by which point strength has developed enough for post-tensioning/bolt-tightening in normal cases. Full commissioning load should still be confirmed against your specific equipment’s requirement and, on critical machinery, checked with our site engineer.
Does the hot Delhi/NCR summer affect the pour?
Yes — application (working) time falls from about 60 minutes at 5°C to around 30 minutes at 35°C, so on a peak-summer pour we recommend smaller batches, shaded storage of bags before mixing, and having the formwork and pumping/pouring route fully ready before you start mixing.
What quantity do we need to order for a given base plate?
Each 30 kg bag needs 3.6-3.75 litres of water and yields about 14.6 litres of wet grout, so divide your total pour volume (length × width × height of the gap) by 14.6 litres to get bags required, then add a margin for formwork loss and trial batching.
Is it safe to use where the grout will stay in contact with anchor bolts and rebar long-term?
Yes — Emcekrete 70DS is formulated free from chlorides and other aggressive constituents, so embedded steel and anchor bolts are protected from chloride-induced corrosion, which matters for foundations that see regular water exposure.

How we position MC-Bauchemie Emcekrete 70DS

Within MC-Bauchemie’s own line-up, Emcekrete 70DS sits at the high-performance end of the Emcekrete precision-grout family — Space Arc stocks it specifically for jobs where dynamic loading and long-term shrinkage compensation matter, and can advise on lighter-duty or faster-set MC grouts from the same range where a project’s early-strength or pour-depth requirement differs. Against the wider market, the honest comparison is Fosroc’s Conbextra range: Conbextra GP2 covers similar general-purpose free-flow grouting territory at a slightly lower strength class, while Conbextra HES exists for sites that need roughly 25 MPa in about two hours rather than 24 — a speed Emcekrete 70DS isn’t built for. Where the job genuinely needs EN 1504-6 anchoring certification plus documented dual-shrinkage compensation to ASTM C-1107, Emcekrete 70DS is the more specified-grade choice; where budget or standardisation on Fosroc’s system matters more than that certification, GP2 or HES are credible alternatives Space Arc can also supply.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Conbextra GP2 — A specifier already standardised on Fosroc for other packages, or needing a slightly lower-strength-class (around 65 N/mm² at 28 days) general-purpose free-flow cementitious grout for a routine machine-base or base-plate job, might reasonably choose Conbextra GP2 instead, though it doesn’t match Emcekrete 70DS’s dual-shrinkage-compensation certification to ASTM C-1107 Grade C.
