What is it?

A polymer-modified, hydraulically setting cementitious micro-concrete supplied as a ready-to-use grey powder — just add water.

Where is it used?

Precast-to-in-situ joints, beam/column/bridge repairs (especially overhead sections), and micro-concreting around fastening bolts and embedded steel.

Why use it?

Non-shrink to ASTM C-1107 Grade A, high early strength of 20 MPa or more in 24 hours, chloride-free, and flows to 230 mm even at a lean 0.13 water-powder ratio.

How is it applied?

Mix 3.6-4.2 litres of water per 30 kg bag (water into the bucket first), pour into rigid leak-proof shuttering from one side, avoid vibration, and cure like ordinary concrete.

About MC-Bauchemie Emcekrete Type A

Emcekrete Type A is MC-Bauchemie’s ready-to-use micro-concrete for the awkward repair jobs ordinary RMC can’t reach — a 25-75 mm soffit patch on a flyover pier, the gap between a precast wall panel and an in-situ plinth beam, or the void around an anchor bolt that has to take load again by the next morning. It ships as a single grey powder bag, with no separate polymer liquid or site-dosed admixture, which matters where batching discipline varies from crew to crew. Add water, pour, and the polymer-modified binder bonds to old concrete and vertical faces without the de-bonding that plain sand-cement patches are notorious for.

What earns it a place on Space Arc’s shortlist is the strength curve: 20 MPa or more inside 24 hours and 50 MPa or more by 28 days (ASTM C109, 50 mm cubes), with non-shrink performance to ASTM C-1107 Grade A. That lets contractors reopen a repaired bridge lane or re-torque a machine base sooner than a conventional repair mortar allows, while the chloride-free chemistry keeps freshly exposed reinforcement from becoming the next corrosion complaint. We stock the standard 30 kg sack and route it through the same site-support process as every MC-Bauchemie product — dosage guidance, curing-compound pairing, and TDS/SDS on request.

The technical insight

The number worth studying on the datasheet is the water-powder ratio: just 0.12-0.14, or 3.6-4.2 litres per 30 kg bag. Most crews instinctively add more water for flow, but that defeats the point — MC-Bauchemie has engineered the powder blend (4.75 mm-down aggregate, low air entrainment) to hit 230 mm flow on the EN 445/ASTM C230 cone at the lean end of that range, giving a dense 2,300 kg/m³ grout without over-watering weakening the matrix. The controlled 1-2% early expansion (ASTM C940, complete within 120 minutes) offsets plastic shrinkage before initial set at around 300 minutes — that’s the mechanism behind the non-shrink claim, not just a label.

Where it is used

  • Filling rigid joints between precast elements, and between precast panels and in-situ RCC
  • Repair of RCC beams, columns and structural supports, including overhead sections up to 75 mm thick
  • Bridge pier, deck and soffit patch repairs on infrastructure and EPC projects
  • Micro-concreting around fastening bolts and embedded steel sections in machine foundations
  • Reinstating chloride-free cover concrete after rebar cleaning in corrosion-rehabilitation works
  • Precast box-culvert and segment joint grouting

Key advantages

  • Non-shrink to ASTM C-1107 Grade A, keeping the repair dimensionally stable under load
  • High early strength: 20 MPa or more in 24 hours lets crews resume loading or strip formwork sooner
  • Reaches 50 MPa or more at 28 days, matching typical M40-grade structural concrete
  • Flows to 230 mm at a lean 0.13 water-powder ratio, filling congested joints without segregation
  • Chloride-free formulation, so there is no added corrosion risk to adjacent reinforcement
  • Single-bag, factory-proportioned powder gives consistent quality across a multi-location repair programme

Limitations & considerations

  • Capped at 75 mm pour thickness and 4.75 mm aggregate, so it isn’t a substitute for coarse-aggregate concrete in deeper structural sections
  • Short batch life: mixed material must be placed within 30 minutes, dropping to just 30 minutes application time at 35°C in north Indian summer
  • Needs rigid, leak-proof, jacketed formwork; the free-flow consistency that helps it fill joints will also exploit any gap
  • Cold-weather placing below 5°C requires pre-heating the substrate to +20°C, not a straightforward winter option on hill sites

Selection & best practice

Wet the substrate thoroughly and remove dust and laitance before shuttering — Emcekrete Type A bonds to what’s actually there, not what’s underneath. Build formwork rigid, leak-proof and jacketed; a grout this fluid will find any gap. Mix water into the bucket first, then add powder to avoid lumps and trapped air, and pour from one side only in a continuous run — never mix more than can be placed in 30 minutes. In Delhi-NCR summer, expect the working window to shrink toward the 30-minute figure on the datasheet, so batch small and keep a second mixer ready on large pours. Avoid vibrating the grout during placement and for roughly 2 hours after; cure exposed faces with an Emcoril curing compound, and below 5°C pre-warm the substrate to +20°C before placing.

Frequently asked questions

What water do I add per bag?
3.6-4.2 litres per 30 kg bag, targeting a water-powder ratio of 0.12-0.14. Take the water in the mixing bucket first and add the powder to it, never the reverse.
How thick a section can I pour in one go?
Up to 75 mm per the datasheet. For chunkier sections you need coarser-aggregate structural concrete, or a staged-pour recommendation from MC-Bauchemie.
How soon can I load or strip formwork?
Compressive strength is 20 MPa or more at 24 hours, but final strip/load decisions should follow site-specific engineering sign-off, not just the 24-hour figure.
Does it shrink over time?
No — it’s certified non-shrink to ASTM C-1107 Grade A, with a controlled 1-2% early expansion that offsets plastic shrinkage before initial set.
Is it safe to use near reinforcement without corrosion risk?
Yes, the formulation is chloride-free, so it doesn’t add corrosion risk to adjacent steel.
How long do I have to place a mixed batch?
Application time is 60/45/30 minutes at 5°C/20°C/35°C respectively. In Delhi-NCR summer, plan around the 30-minute figure and batch accordingly.

How we position MC-Bauchemie Emcekrete Type A

Emcekrete Type A sits within MC-Bauchemie’s Emcekrete micro-concrete and precision-grout range, which Space Arc stocks alongside the brand’s Nafufill repair-mortar system for patch repairs that don’t need free-flow placement, and Emcoril curing compounds for protecting the grout once poured. Where a brief specifically calls for a “non-shrink grout” rather than a repair micro-concrete — typically machine-base and anchor-bolt grouting with less emphasis on overhead bonding — Fosroc’s Conbextra GP3 is a genuine alternative in the same non-shrink, extended-pour-depth bracket, and some specifiers default to it as the more commonly tendered name on older structural specs. Space Arc supplies both brands, so the choice can come down to project spec rather than availability.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Conbextra GP3 — Specifiers writing a straightforward non-shrink machine-base or anchor-bolt grout spec (rather than a repair micro-concrete) sometimes default to Conbextra GP3 for its extended pour-depth range and because it’s the more commonly tendered name on older structural specs.
