What is it?

A two-part, water-dispersed epoxy protective coating that is solvent-free and odourless, formulated to adhere to damp interior surfaces and breathe out trapped moisture.

Where is it used?

Damp interior walls, basements, workshops, balconies, cantilevers, galleries, stairwells and the inner faces of water reservoirs and storage tanks.

Why use it?

It grips surfaces that ordinary paints and solvent epoxies reject, and its breathable film releases entrapped moisture so the coating does not blister or flake.

How is it applied?

Stir Part A and Part B separately, blend at 2:1 by weight for two minutes, then apply a minimum of two coats by brush or roller within the pot life.

About Sika Multigard

Sika Multigard is Sika’s answer to a problem every site engineer in India recognises: interior walls, basement soffits and reservoir faces that never fully dry out, where conventional emulsion paints and solvent-based epoxies lift, bubble and peel within months. It is a two-component, water-dispersed epoxy that is solvent-free and odourless, which makes it usable in enclosed basements, plant rooms and occupied buildings where solvent fumes would be unacceptable. Part A and Part B are pre-batched and supplied together, so there is no site guesswork over ratios, and clean-up is done with water while the material is still wet.

What sets it apart is the balance it strikes. The cured film is tight enough to shrug off moisture, oil, grease and mild weathering, yet it stays breathable, allowing water vapour rising through the substrate to escape rather than build up behind the coating. That single characteristic is why it can be applied to surfaces that are still visibly damp and why it holds where film-forming paints fail. It is trusted enough to be used on the interiors of potable-water reservoirs, and it can be tinted with a water-based stainer or overcoated with paint once cured, so it doubles as both a functional barrier and a finish.

The technical insight

The behaviour that matters here is vapour permeability. A dense solvent-based epoxy forms a near-impermeable film; when it is laid over a substrate that still carries moisture, water vapour driven outward by temperature and humidity gradients has nowhere to go, so it collects at the coating-substrate interface, breaks the bond and lifts the film into blisters. Sika Multigard is engineered the other way around. Because it is water-dispersed rather than solvent-carried, the cured film retains a controlled degree of permeability, letting entrapped moisture diffuse out through the coating instead of accumulating beneath it. The result is a film that resists liquid water and contaminants from the exposed face while remaining forgiving of residual dampness from the substrate side, which is exactly why it bonds reliably to green or damp concrete and masonry where a conventional epoxy would delaminate.

Where it is used

  • Damp-proofing interior walls and ceilings that suffer persistent damp patches
  • Coating basement walls and soffits where residual moisture defeats normal paint
  • Lining the interiors of water reservoirs and storage tanks, including potable-water reservoirs
  • Protecting workshops, industrial plant rooms and utility areas against moisture and mild chemical attack
  • Sealing the underside of cantilevers, galleries and balconies exposed to damp
  • Treating stairwells, retaining-wall faces and other perennially damp masonry surfaces
  • Providing a tintable or overcoatable base finish on interior surfaces
  • Guarding surfaces against oil, grease and weathering in service areas

Key advantages

  • Bonds to surfaces that are still damp, unlike most paints and solvent epoxies
  • Breathable film lets trapped moisture escape, preventing blistering and peeling
  • Solvent-free and odourless, so it is safe to use in enclosed basements and occupied interiors
  • Approved for use inside potable-water reservoirs
  • Resists moisture, oil, grease and mild weathering once cured
  • Pre-batched two-part kit removes ratio errors and simplifies mixing on site
  • Applied simply by brush or roller with water-based clean-up before cure
  • Can be tinted with a water-based stainer or overcoated with paint

Limitations & considerations

  • Intended for interior use; it is not positioned as an exposed exterior weatherproofing system
  • Resists mild chemical attack only, so it is not a chemical-resistant lining for aggressive process environments
  • Short pot life of roughly 30 minutes at +30°C means each batch must be used quickly
  • Application is limited to +8°C to +35°C and up to 75% relative humidity, with the substrate at least 3°C above dew point
  • Requires a minimum of two coats and about seven days to reach full cure
  • Potable-water use requires project-specific approvals and correct surface preparation before commissioning

Selection & best practice

Prepare the substrate so it is sound, clean and free of loose material, laitance, oil and old flaking paint; the surface may be damp but should not have free-standing water, and it must sit at least 3°C above the dew point. Stir Part A and Part B thoroughly on their own, then add Part B into Part A at 2:1 by weight and mix continuously for about two minutes until uniform. Because pot life is only around 30 minutes at +30°C, mix only what the crew can apply in that window. Lay a minimum of two coats by brush or roller, allowing the first to become tack-free (roughly two hours at +30°C) before the second. Keep application within +8°C to +35°C and below 75% relative humidity, and protect the fresh film from water contact until it has cured, allowing up to seven days for full cure. For potable-water reservoirs, secure the project-specific approval and follow the specified cleaning and filling sequence before the tank is put into service.

Frequently asked questions

Can Sika Multigard really be applied to a damp wall?
Yes. It is specifically formulated to bond to damp interior surfaces, and its breathable film lets trapped moisture diffuse out rather than build up and blister the coating. The surface should be damp but free of standing water and at least 3°C above the dew point.
Is it safe for potable-water tanks?
Sika Multigard is suitable for use inside potable-water reservoirs. For any drinking-water application, secure the project-specific approval, prepare the surface correctly and follow the specified cleaning and filling sequence before the tank is commissioned.
How much area does one pack cover?
One 600 g set covers roughly 20 sq ft in two coats. Actual coverage depends on surface texture and porosity, so allow extra on rough or absorbent substrates.
What is the working time after mixing?
Pot life is about 30 minutes at +30°C, and higher temperatures shorten it further. Mix only the quantity your crew can apply within that window to avoid waste.
Can it be used outdoors?
It is designed as an interior protective coating. For exposed exterior concrete facades, an anti-carbonation or hydrophobic-impregnation system is the more appropriate choice, and we can advise on the right product for the exposure.
Can I paint over it or colour it?
Yes. Once cured it can be tinted with a water-based stainer or overcoated with paint, so it works as both a functional damp barrier and a finished surface.

How we position Sika Multigard

Sika Multigard sits at the light-to-moderate end of interior moisture protection, where the real challenge is adhesion to damp substrates rather than aggressive chemical exposure. Within the Sika family it pairs naturally with Sikagard-62, a heavier-build solvent-free epoxy for tanks and severe-duty surfaces, and with Sika’s cementitious waterproofing slurries where positive-side water pressure has to be resisted rather than merely a damp face sealed. For projects that need a genuinely chemical-resistant or high-build lining, step up to a 100% solids epoxy. Across our other brands, we position it alongside Dr. Fixit and STP damp-proofing coatings for residential interiors, and against Fosroc’s protective-coating range where the specifier prefers a single Fosroc-standardised system on site. Talk to our team and we will match the coating to the substrate condition, the exposure and the approvals your project actually needs.
