What is it?

A liquid poly-hydroxyl retarding and stabilising concrete admixture from Sika, conforming to ASTM C494 Type B and IS 9103.

Where is it used?

Ready-mix concrete with wash-water recycling, bored piles, shotcrete, mass pours and any placement where extended setting time and slump retention matter.

Why use it?

It buys working time in hot weather, prevents cold joints on long hauls, and is chloride-free so it does not corrode reinforcement.

How is it applied?

Dosed at 0.20-2% by weight of cement, added to the mixing water or into the mixer at the batching plant after trial-mix optimisation.

About Sika Plastiment-3 VZ

Sika Plastiment-3 VZ is a set-retarding and stabilising admixture built for the realities of Indian concreting: high ambient temperatures, long transit distances between batching plant and site, and pours large enough that a premature set means a cold joint. Based on a poly-hydroxyl compound, it delays the initial hydration of cement in a controlled way, so a mix stays plastic and placeable for longer without the batch designer having to add water on site. Because it is entirely chloride-free, it does this without introducing any corrosion risk to the reinforcement, which makes it suitable for structural and reinforced work rather than plain mass concrete alone.

For a distributor’s customer base of RMC producers, piling contractors and infrastructure builders, the appeal is practical. The same admixture that lets a ready-mix load survive a two-hour haul in a Delhi summer also stabilises the mix enough to reuse recycled wash water, holds workability through a deep bored-pile placement, and keeps shotcrete cohesive as it is sprayed. It is compatible with every cement type and with much of the wider Sika admixture range, so it slots into an existing mix design as a targeted retarder rather than forcing a redesign. Supplied in 255 kg drums, it is aimed squarely at plant-scale rather than site-bucket use.

The technical insight

The retardation comes from the poly-hydroxyl chemistry temporarily adsorbing onto the surface of the cement grains and the early hydration products. That thin adsorbed layer slows the rate at which water reaches the unhydrated cement, which pushes back the point at which the paste stiffens and sets. Crucially the effect is a delay, not a permanent suppression: once hydration overcomes the barrier, the concrete hardens normally and, because the extended dormant period allows a more ordered crystal structure to form, it typically reaches higher ultimate strengths than the same mix set at normal speed. The degree of delay tracks almost linearly with dosage, which is why the 0.20-2% band is wide and why the retardation can be tuned to the haul time and temperature of a specific job. The stabilising side of the product keeps the mix cohesive and resistant to bleeding and segregation over that longer open time, which is what makes recycled wash water and long-transit RMC practical without the load falling apart.

Where it is used

  • Ready-mix concrete production where recycled wash water is reintroduced into the batch
  • Long-haul RMC deliveries that must survive extended transit before placement
  • Large-volume and mass pours where a fresh layer must bond before the previous lift sets
  • Bored piles and deep foundations that need sustained workability during a long placement
  • Sprayed concrete (shotcrete) for tunnels, slope stabilisation and ground support
  • Concreting in elevated ambient temperatures and hot-weather conditions
  • Placements where construction joints and cold joints must be avoided
  • Revibrated concrete and difficult placing conditions requiring extended open time

Key advantages

  • Extends setting time in hot weather so mixes stay placeable longer
  • Chloride-free formulation that does not attack embedded reinforcement
  • Long-lasting control over slump loss during transport and placement
  • Stabilises the mix, supporting wash-water reuse and reducing segregation
  • Normal hardening resumes after the delay, often with higher ultimate strengths
  • Wide 0.20-2% dosage band allows the retardation to be tuned to the job
  • Compatible with all cement types and much of the Sika admixture range
  • Improves surface finish on the placed and revibrated concrete

Limitations & considerations

  • Retardation is dosage-sensitive; overdosing can delay set far longer than intended, so trial mixes are essential
  • Actual retardation shifts with cement quality, aggregate, w/c ratio and temperature, meaning the dosage must be re-validated per mix
  • Supplied only in 255 kg drums, so it is geared to plant use rather than small site batches
  • It is a retarder, not a water-reducer or superplasticiser; a separate admixture is needed where significant water reduction or high flow is required
  • Shelf life is 12 months and it must be protected from frost and direct sunlight, so stock rotation and covered storage matter

Selection & best practice

Always fix the dosage by trial mix rather than assuming a figure from the range: the same 0.5% that gives a comfortable extra hour in one mix may over-retard another with different cement or a lower w/c ratio. Start trials at the lower end of the 0.20-2% band and step up until the target setting time and slump retention are met at the expected site temperature. Dispense it into the mixing water or add it simultaneously with the water into the mixer at the plant, never by dumping it onto dry cement. Keep the drums sealed, dry and between +10°C and +40°C, out of direct sun and away from frost, and use within the 12-month shelf life. If it will be combined with other Sika admixtures such as a superplasticiser, run a compatibility trial on that specific combination before it goes into production.

Industry use cases

Ready-Mix Concrete

Lets a batching plant hold slump across long deliveries and safely reuse recycled wash water without the load segregating.

Piling & Foundations

Keeps bored-pile and deep-foundation concrete workable through a slow, deep placement so the column stays homogeneous.

Tunnelling & Ground Support

Stabilises shotcrete for tunnel linings, slope protection and ground support, keeping the sprayed mix cohesive.

Infrastructure & Mass Pours

Prevents cold joints in rafts, bridge elements and large pours by keeping each lift live until the next arrives.

Hot-Weather Concreting

Buys the extra working time that summer placements across Delhi NCR and pan-India need to finish before set.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sika Plastiment-3 VZ chloride-free and safe for reinforced concrete?
Yes. It is a chloride-free formulation, so it does not attack embedded steel and is suitable for reinforced and structural concrete, not just plain mass concrete.
What dosage should I use?
The recommended range is 0.20-2% by weight of cement. The exact figure depends on your cement, aggregates, w/c ratio and site temperature, so it must be fixed by trial mix rather than assumed.
Does it reduce concrete strength because it delays setting?
No. The delay is temporary. After the extended dormant period the concrete hardens normally and typically reaches higher ultimate strengths, because the slower start allows a more ordered hydration.
Can it be used with recycled wash water in an RMC plant?
Yes. Its stabilising action is one reason it is specified for wash-water application in ready-mix production, helping keep the mix cohesive and consistent.
How is it dosed into the mix?
Dispense it directly into the mixing water or add it simultaneously with the water into the concrete mixer at the plant. Do not add it to dry cement.
What pack size and shelf life does it have?
It is supplied in 255 kg drums with a 12-month shelf life from production, provided it is stored sealed and dry between +10°C and +40°C, away from frost and direct sunlight.

How we position Sika Plastiment-3 VZ

Within the Sika range, Plastiment-3 VZ is the heavy-duty retarding and stabilising option; where a job needs both meaningful water reduction and retardation, pair or compare it with a Sika plasticiser or a high-range superplasticiser from the SikaPlast / Sika ViscoCrete family, and reserve the plain VZ-1 and VZ-2 Plastiment grades for simpler set-retarding needs. From our other brands, contractors seeking a combined water-reducing retarder often look at Fosroc’s Conplast retarding range or an MC-Bauchemie retarder as an alternative source, while jobs that pivot from retardation to high flow may need a PCE superplasticiser such as Fosroc Auramix 400 instead of, or alongside, this product.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Conplast RP264 — A specifier who needs meaningful water reduction as well as retardation may prefer Conplast RP264, a chloride-free ASTM C494 Type B/D retarding water-reducer, where Plastiment-3 VZ is a pure retarder-stabiliser.
