Product Overview

SikaBond AT-Universal is a one-component, moisture-curing, elastic adhesive and sealant from Sika designed for structural and semi-structural bonding of diverse construction materials in building, facade, fit-out, and infrastructure applications. Based on modified polyurethane chemistry, SikaBond AT-Universal cures by reaction with atmospheric moisture after application from a standard cartridge gun, forming a permanently flexible, elastic, and waterproof bond between two substrates. The elastic nature of the cured adhesive — it remains flexible across a wide service temperature range — is a critical advantage over rigid adhesives (such as epoxy) in construction bonding applications where differential thermal movement between dissimilar materials (e.g., aluminium cladding panels bonded to a concrete subframe, or ceramic tiles on a steel structure) would crack a rigid adhesive bond. SikaBond AT-Universal accommodates this differential movement in the adhesive layer without debonding or cracking, maintaining the bond line integrity over the service life of the building. It bonds without primers to a wide range of materials including concrete, masonry, ceramic tile, granite and stone, painted steel, aluminium, wood (MDF, plywood, hardwood), rigid PVC, glass, and many other substrates commonly encountered in Indian construction and fit-out work. The one-component cartridge format makes SikaBond AT-Universal very easy to use on site without mixing equipment — the operative simply loads the cartridge into a standard mastic gun and applies a bead or pattern of adhesive to one substrate before pressing the two surfaces together and maintaining contact pressure until the adhesive grabs. SikaBond AT-Universal has an open time of approximately 20 to 30 minutes at 23 degrees C and 50 percent relative humidity — this is the time available after adhesive application to position and adjust the second substrate before the adhesive skins and loses its ability to wet and bond to the mating surface. In practice, once the two surfaces are pressed together the position should be fixed within the first 10 to 15 minutes for optimal bond development. In the hot dry conditions of Delhi NCR summers (40 degrees C, low relative humidity) the open time may be slightly shorter due to faster moisture absorption from the hot dry adhesive surface. Conversely, in high humidity conditions (monsoon season) the cure rate is faster and the open time may be reduced further. Holding time before load-bearing: components bonded with SikaBond AT-Universal must be held in contact with pressure (by clamps, temporary fasteners, or dead-weight) for a minimum of 60 minutes at 23 degrees C before any load or stress is applied to the joint. This allows the adhesive to develop sufficient initial strength to hold the components without slipping. For overhead or vertical applications where gravity would pull components off before cure, temporary mechanical support (screws, wedges, or tape) should be maintained for a minimum of 4 to 6 hours. Full bond strength development takes 7 days at 23 degrees C and 50 percent RH.
