What is it?

A pre-blended dry-shake powder of graded non-metallic aggregates, cement and pigments that hardens the top layer of fresh concrete floors.

Where is it used?

Warehouses, factory floors, workshops, service stations, garages and loading quays that see heavy foot and vehicle traffic.

Why use it?

It sharply raises abrasion resistance, cuts surface dusting and, being non-metallic, will never rust-stain like iron-based hardeners in wet or washdown areas.

How is it applied?

Broadcast dry onto fresh, bled-off concrete in two 50:50 shakes, then power-float and trowel it monolithically into the slab.

About STP ShaliFloor NM

STP ShaliFloor NM is a factory pre-blended, single-component dry-shake floor hardener built from finely graded non-metallic aggregates, cement, pigments and performance additives. Instead of laying a separate topping, contractors broadcast the dry powder straight onto a freshly placed concrete slab once the bleed water has gone, then work it in with a power float. The result is a hardened wearing surface that is bonded monolithically to the parent slab, so there is no risk of delamination between a topping and its base. Because the aggregate is non-metallic rather than iron-based, the floor stays free of the rust bleeding and brown staining that plague metallic hardeners in damp, wet-process and wash-down environments.

Suitable for both interior and exterior slabs, ShaliFloor NM is aimed squarely at floors that take a beating: forklift wheels, steel-tyred trolleys, dragged loads and constant foot traffic. It reaches a Moh’s surface hardness of 7 to 9 and, at 28 days, an integral compressive strength of 60 to 70 N/mm2, comfortably outperforming an untreated concrete finish. Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliFloor NM across Delhi NCR and pan-India and, as an authorised applicator, can execute the dry-shake, floating and curing sequence on site so specifiers get a finish that actually matches the datasheet rather than one compromised by poor technique.

The technical insight

The performance of a dry-shake hardener is decided in the first hour after the concrete stops bleeding. ShaliFloor NM works by seeding the surface paste with hard, closely graded non-metallic aggregate and extra cementitious binder, then relying on the slab’s own bleed moisture to hydrate that binder in place. When it is floated and trowelled, the aggregate is driven down into the top few millimetres and locked into the same cement matrix as the slab, forming a single dense, low-porosity wearing layer rather than a bonded overlay. That density is what delivers the abrasion figure of 1.5 to 2.5 mg loss under IS 1237 and chokes off the fine dust that ordinary power-floated concrete sheds under traffic. The non-metallic chemistry matters just as much: with no iron in the mix there is nothing to oxidise, so the floor passes 150 hours of salt-spray as non-rusting and holds its colour in wet and food-contact areas where a metallic hardener would streak.

Where it is used

  • Warehouse and distribution-centre floors under forklift and pallet-truck traffic
  • Manufacturing and factory floors subject to heavy-duty abrasion
  • Vehicle service stations, garages and workshop bays
  • Loading quays, docks and material-handling aprons
  • Car park decks and access ramps in commercial buildings
  • Wash-down and wet-process areas where rust staining must be avoided
  • Coloured floors where a uniform pigmented wearing surface is specified
  • Vacuum-dewatered concrete floors at up to 5 kg/m2 spread rate

Key advantages

  • High resistance to abrasion, with only 1.5-2.5 mg loss under IS 1237
  • Non-metallic and non-rusting, so no brown staining in wet or wash-down areas
  • Bonds monolithically to fresh concrete, eliminating topping delamination
  • Sharply reduces surface dusting for cleaner, lower-maintenance floors
  • Improved impact and wear resistance versus a plain trowelled finish
  • Better resistance to oils and greases in workshop and industrial settings
  • Single-component dry-shake, so no site mixing or added water needed
  • Cost-effective way to upgrade large floor areas in one monolithic pour

Limitations & considerations

  • Can only be applied to fresh, still-plastic concrete, not to existing or cured slabs
  • Requires a compliant base: minimum 300 kg/m3 cement, 50-75 mm slump, 25 MPa, 15 cm thick
  • Air-entrained concrete is unsuitable and supplementary cementitious mixes are not recommended
  • Application timing is critical and demands skilled dry-shake and power-float operators
  • Never add surface water for trowelling ease, as this weakens the finished layer
  • Curing with ShaliCure PA (or ponding/sheeting) is essential or surface performance drops

Selection & best practice

Start with the base slab: confirm at least 300 kg of cement per cubic metre, a 50-75 mm slump, 25 MPa minimum strength and a 15 cm minimum thickness, and keep air-entrained mixes off the job. Let the concrete bleed, then drag off all surface water with burlap before the first shake. Divide the total dose 50:50 and broadcast the first shake evenly, letting it darken as it draws moisture; apply the second shake at right angles to the first, working the edges first. Compact with a low-rpm power float held flat, never adding water to ease trowelling. Smooth as the initial set arrives, then final-trowel at higher speed with blades at a shallow angle. Saw-cut construction, expansion and control joints only after 24 hours and seal them with ShaliSeal PS. Cure immediately with ShaliCure PA, or by water ponding or polythene sheeting, and keep traffic off for the recommended periods.

Frequently asked questions

Is ShaliFloor NM really non-rusting compared with metallic hardeners?
Yes. It uses non-metallic aggregate with no iron content, so there is nothing to oxidise. It passes 150 hours of salt spray as non-rusting, which is why it is preferred in wet, wash-down and food-contact areas where metallic hardeners bleed brown stains.
How much material do I need per square metre?
Consumption depends on duty: roughly 3.0-4.0 kg/m2 for light traffic, 4.5-5.3 kg/m2 for medium and 5.5-6.5 kg/m2 for heavy traffic. On vacuum-dewatered concrete keep the spread rate to a maximum of 5 kg/m2.
Can it be applied to an existing or already-cured concrete floor?
No. It is a dry-shake product that must go onto fresh, still-plastic concrete so it can be floated in monolithically. For a hardened existing slab you would need a bonded screed or a resin coating instead, which we can advise on.
What base concrete does it need?
A minimum of 300 kg of cement per cubic metre, a 50-75 mm slump, 25 MPa minimum strength and a 15 cm minimum thickness. Air-entrained concrete and mixes heavy in supplementary cementitious materials are not recommended.
How is it cured and when can the floor take traffic?
Cure immediately with ShaliCure PA, or by water ponding or polythene sheeting. Foot traffic is usually fine after 1-2 days, light vehicles after 8-10 days, with full cure at 28 days.
What colours and pack size are available?
It is supplied as a pigmented powder in 30 kg moisture-resistant bags with a 6-month shelf life when sealed. Share your required shade and area with Space Arc and we will confirm available colours and quantity for your project.

How we position STP ShaliFloor NM

ShaliFloor NM is the workhorse non-metallic hardener in STP’s flooring range and is best specified alongside its natural partners: ShaliCure PA to lock in the wearing surface during curing, and ShaliSeal PS to seal the saw-cut construction and control joints. Where a bonded high-build screed is needed over an existing slab rather than a dry-shake on fresh concrete, ShaliFloor Screed is the STP option to look at. For projects standardised on Fosroc, Nitoflor Hardtop Standard is the equivalent non-metallic dry-shake hardener. Across brands, Space Arc also supplies metallic dry-shake hardeners for the most extreme impact-and-abrasion floors, and epoxy or PU floor coatings where a chemically resistant, seamless finish is the priority over a cementitious wearing surface. We can help match the right system to your floor’s duty, environment and budget.
