What is it?

A reinforced glass fibre mat pre-impregnated with ShaliEnamel-compatible coal tar material, used as the outermost reinforcing layer of a hot-applied coal tar enamel (CTE) pipeline coating system.

Where is it used?

On buried and submerged steel pipelines — cross-country oil and gas lines, water mains, and industrial process lines — coated to AWWA C-203.

Why use it?

It absorbs the mechanical punishment of lowering-in and backfill, keeping the enamel intact so the pipe’s cathodic-plus-barrier protection survives decades underground.

How is it applied?

Embedded by hand or spiral wrapping machine into the final hot flood coat of ShaliEnamel, over the inner wrap, so the mat saturates and bonds into the enamel as it cools.

About STP STPOuterWrap

STPOuterWrap is the reinforcing skin of a coal tar enamel pipeline coating. It is a reinforced glass fibre mat that arrives already impregnated and coated with a ShaliEnamel-compatible coal tar material, which means it does not sit dry on the pipe — it fuses into the hot enamel and becomes one continuous, monolithic layer. Its job is deliberately unglamorous but critical: it is the last line of physical defence between a buried steel pipeline and everything the ground throws at it. When a coated pipe is lowered into a trench and covered, sharp aggregate, rock shields, thermal movement and settlement all press against the coating; the outer wrap spreads and resists those loads so the brittle enamel underneath is not gouged or cracked.

In the STP system STPOuterWrap always works alongside STPInnerWrap, the lighter 45 GSM inner reinforcement, and ShaliEnamel, the hot-poured coal tar enamel itself. The inner wrap reinforces the enamel from within; the outer wrap adds bulk, tensile strength and a wear surface on the outside. Because both mats and the enamel share the same coal-tar chemistry, there is no incompatibility at the interfaces — the coating behaves as a single homogeneous system rather than a stack of dissimilar films. For engineers specifying to AWWA C-203, this two-wrap-plus-enamel build is the classic, field-proven configuration for heavy-duty external corrosion protection.

The technical insight

Coal tar enamel protects steel two ways at once: it is a near-impermeable barrier to water and oxygen, and it is chemically inert to the aggressive salts and bacteria in soil. But enamel on its own is relatively brittle and thick, which makes it vulnerable to impact and to sagging on large-diameter pipe before it fully cools. The glass fibre wraps solve both problems. The mat acts like rebar in concrete — a random fibre network that carries tensile and shear loads the enamel cannot, holding the film together when the ground moves. Because STPOuterWrap is pre-saturated with compatible coal tar material, it melts into the final flood coat instead of merely resting on it, eliminating the air voids and delamination planes that a dry mat would trap. The result is a reinforced composite whose fibres restrain the enamel while the enamel seals the fibres, so a single scrape during backfill damages a wear layer rather than reaching bare steel. That intact barrier is also what lets the pipeline’s cathodic protection work efficiently, because current is only wasted where the coating has failed.

Where it is used

  • Outer mechanical reinforcement for hot-applied coal tar enamel coatings on buried steel oil and gas pipelines
  • Protective wrap for AWWA C-203 water transmission mains and trunk lines
  • External coating reinforcement for submerged and river-crossing steel pipelines
  • Field joint and tie-in coating over girth welds after mainline coating
  • Coating rehabilitation of exposed or excavated legacy CTE-coated pipe
  • Protection of pipelines laid in rocky, abrasive or high-water-table trenches
  • Reinforcement layer for coated fittings, bends and special sections
  • Industrial process and effluent pipelines requiring long-life buried corrosion protection

Key advantages

  • Fuses into the enamel because it is pre-impregnated with compatible coal tar, giving a void-free, monolithic coating
  • Adds real tensile and impact strength so the enamel survives lowering-in and backfill
  • Same coal-tar chemistry as ShaliEnamel and STPInnerWrap — no interface incompatibility
  • Part of a recognised AWWA C-203 system familiar to consultants and third-party inspectors
  • Provides a sacrificial wear surface and shields the enamel from UV during above-ground storage
  • Suits large-diameter and heavy-wall pipe where mechanical abuse is greatest
  • Applies by hand for joints or by spiral wrapping machine for mainline production
  • Long, maintenance-free service life once buried and backfilled

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a standalone product — it only performs as part of a complete ShaliEnamel / inner-wrap CTE system
  • Requires hot application; the enamel must be at the correct temperature for the mat to saturate and bond
  • Coal tar enamel work needs trained applicators and PPE for hot bitumen and fume exposure
  • Being coal-tar based, it is a buried-pipeline product, not a solution for potable-water-contact linings where CTE is restricted
  • Correct wrap tension and overlap are essential; loose or wrinkled application leaves weak spots
  • Surface preparation of the steel and priming with ShaliPrimeCT still govern the ultimate coating life

Selection & best practice

Treat the outer wrap as one step in a disciplined sequence, not an afterthought. Blast-clean the steel to the specified standard, apply ShaliPrimeCT primer, then build the coating hot: a ShaliEnamel flood coat, STPInnerWrap embedded into it, a further enamel coat, and finally STPOuterWrap wound into the last flood coat while the enamel is still molten so the mat wets out completely. Keep the enamel kettle temperature controlled and never let it exceed 260°C, and use enamel within the pot life once at temperature. Apply the wrap under even tension with a consistent overlap so there are no wrinkles, ridges or dry patches, and inspect with a holiday detector before lowering-in. Handle and store coated pipe on padded skids to protect the coating until backfill, and bed the pipe in screened material free of sharp rock.

Industry use cases

Oil & Gas Pipelines

Cross-country crude and gas transmission lines rely on the outer wrap to keep the CTE barrier intact through years of ground movement and settlement.

Water Infrastructure

Large steel water transmission mains coated to AWWA C-203 use the wrap to survive rocky trenches and heavy backfill on long buried runs.

Marine & River Crossings

Submerged and river-crossing pipelines get an abrasion-resistant outer skin over the enamel where mechanical exposure is severe.

Industrial Process Lines

Buried effluent and process pipelines in plants and refineries use the system for decades-long corrosion protection with minimal maintenance.

Coating Rehabilitation

Contractors re-wrap excavated or damaged legacy CTE-coated pipe, restoring the reinforced outer layer at field joints and repair zones.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between STPOuterWrap and STPInnerWrap?
Both are coal-tar-compatible glass fibre mats, but they play different roles. STPInnerWrap is a lighter 45 GSM mat that reinforces the enamel from within, applied between two enamel coats. STPOuterWrap is the heavier outer layer wound into the final flood coat to add bulk, tensile strength and a wear surface that takes the backfill abuse.
Can STPOuterWrap be used on its own without ShaliEnamel?
No. It is a reinforcement layer, not a standalone coating. It only works when embedded hot into a ShaliEnamel coal tar enamel system over a properly primed and inner-wrapped pipe. Used dry or alone it provides no corrosion protection.
Which standard does the coating system comply with?
The complete build is designed to AWWA C-203, the recognised standard for coal-tar protective coatings on steel pipelines. The ShaliEnamel used with it also conforms to BS 4164 Grade 105/8 and AWWA C-203 Type 1.
Is STPOuterWrap suitable for potable water pipelines?
Coal tar enamel systems are primarily specified for external corrosion protection of buried and submerged steel pipelines, including water transmission mains. For internal linings in direct potable-water contact, confirm the specific product approval, since CTE use is restricted in some potable applications.
How is it applied on site?
After priming and the first enamel and inner-wrap coats, a final flood coat of hot ShaliEnamel is poured and STPOuterWrap is wound into it under even tension — by hand at joints or with a spiral wrapping machine on mainline pipe — so the mat saturates and bonds as the enamel cools.
Does Space Arc supply the full coal tar enamel system, not just the wrap?
Yes. As an authorised distributor we supply the complete STP CTE package — ShaliPrimeCT primer, ShaliEnamel, STPInnerWrap and STPOuterWrap — along with application guidance for pipeline contractors across Delhi NCR and pan-India.

How we position STP STPOuterWrap

STPOuterWrap is one component of STP’s coal tar enamel pipeline system and should always be quoted with its partners: ShaliPrimeCT (the coal tar primer that anchors the coating to blast-cleaned steel), ShaliEnamel (the hot-poured coal tar enamel barrier), and STPInnerWrap (the 45 GSM inner reinforcement). Space Arc supplies all four together so specifiers get a chemistry-matched, AWWA C-203 build from a single source rather than mixing brands at critical interfaces. For projects that need a cold-applied alternative to hot enamel, we can advise on tape-wrap and liquid-epoxy pipeline coating options from our wider range. Note that this is a specialised buried-steel-pipeline product; for below-grade structural waterproofing (foundations, tanks, basements) it is a different problem, and there we would point you to membrane systems from Fosroc, Dr. Fixit or STP’s own waterproofing line rather than a pipeline wrap.
