STP TarFelt APP

A cold-bonding APP-modified bitumen membrane that gives torch-grade waterproofing strength without a torch, an LPG cylinder, or a hot-works permit on site.

BrandSTPCategoryWaterproofingFormAn APP-modified bitumen sheet membrane reinforced with non-woven polyester and factory-paired with ShaliBond APP…

What is it?

An APP-modified bitumen sheet membrane reinforced with non-woven polyester and factory-paired with ShaliBond APP adhesive under a release film, so it can be rolled out and pressed into place cold instead of heated with a torch.

Where is it used?

Flat and sloped RCC roofs, basement and podium tanking, retaining walls, precast bearing pads, canal linings, tunnels, and as the base ply in multi-layer waterproofing builds.

Why use it?

It keeps the strength and high softening point of proven APP bitumen chemistry but drops the naked flame, so it works on occupied towers, hospitals and IT campuses where a hot-works permit is hard to get – and a trained crew lays it faster than a torch team.

How is it applied?

Peel the release film, prime the deck and the membrane’s underside with ShaliBond APP, let both surfaces go tacky, then roll and press-bond with 75-100 mm overlaps; it can also be laid the conventional way with hot 85/25 or 30/40 grade bitumen where a torch crew is preferred.

About STP TarFelt APP

TarFelt APP has been in STP Limited’s waterproofing range as the company’s answer to a familiar site problem: torch-applied APP membranes perform well, but running an open flame across a roof deck crowded with cable ducts, AC condenser units and finished parapets is not something every site supervisor wants to sign off on. STP saturates a non-woven polyester carrier with modified bitumen blended with APP (atactic polypropylene) polymer, then factory-laminates it to a layer of ShaliBond APP adhesive under a release film. Peel the film on site, prime the deck, and the sheet bonds without heat – which is why STP describes it as “virtually self-adhesive” rather than a true peel-and-stick, since the bond still needs an applied primer coat and a proper tack window rather than being pressure-sensitive straight out of the roll.

For Space Arc, this is one of the more practical waterproofing SKUs to keep stocked for Delhi NCR work, because a good share of our repeat basement and re-roofing jobs come from occupied buildings – hospitals, hostels, IT campuses – where the facility team simply won’t allow an open flame near the terrace. TarFelt APP lets our applicators quote a torch-free method without stepping away from bituminous chemistry altogether, which matters to consultants who still specify felt membranes by habit and by cost. It sits below Fosroc’s Proofex range on price and a shade below it on brand recall among MNC-specified projects, but on the data sheet the numbers – softening point, tensile strength, elongation – hold up, and STP backs it with roughly eight decades of manufacturing history in India.

The technical insight

The figure worth reading closely on STP’s data sheet is the softening point: 145°C or higher, tested to ASTM D36/IS 1205. Plain paving-grade bitumen softens around 45-55°C, well within the surface temperature a black roof reaches on a May afternoon in Delhi. Blending in roughly a quarter to a third APP polymer by weight pushes the softening point high enough that the membrane doesn’t slump, bleed or lose bond at deck temperatures that routinely cross 65-70°C in North Indian summers. The trade-off with APP chemistry, compared to SBS-modified membranes, is lower flexibility at low temperature; STP’s cold-flexibility result – no cracking at +2°C – is respectable but nowhere near an SBS sheet rated to -15°C or -20°C, which is one reason APP is the default choice in Indian heat rather than in genuinely cold climates. One more point for specifiers: ASTM D5147 covers the composite reinforced membrane, not raw bitumen, so the tensile and tear figures already reflect the polyester carrier doing most of the mechanical work.

Where it is used

  • Flat and sloped RCC roof decks, including terraces over occupied floors where torch work is restricted
  • External tanking of basement walls and rafts in stilt-plus-basement residential and commercial structures
  • Podium decks and planter areas ahead of landscaping or paver finishing
  • Waterproofing over corrugated asbestos or metal roof sheeting on factory and warehouse sheds
  • Bearing pads under precast elements where a damp-proof interlayer is specified
  • Tunnel and subway lining as part of a multi-layer waterproofing build-up
  • Car park deck waterproofing beneath a protective screed or paver system
  • Base ply in canal and irrigation lining works

Key advantages

  • No LPG torch or open flame on site, which removes a fire-permit hurdle on occupied buildings and cuts site-safety friction
  • Lays faster than a torch-applied felt once the crew is trained on the primer’s tack window, since there’s no burner queue holding up the roll-out
  • High softening point (≥145°C) keeps the membrane stable on hot Indian roof decks instead of slumping through peak summer
  • Elongation of 40-60% and tensile strength up to 450 N/5cm give it enough give to ride out thermal movement and minor deck cracking
  • Non-woven polyester carrier resists puncture and tear better than the older fibreglass-mat felts still sold in the market
  • Falls back to conventional hot-bitumen or torch application if the crew prefers it or ShaliBond APP isn’t on hand, so it isn’t locked to one method
  • Full ASTM D5147 test data on a traceable STP data sheet, useful when a consultant asks for compliance paperwork
  • 12-month shelf life when stored upright and shaded, which suits contractors who like to stock rolls ahead of the monsoon rush

Limitations & considerations

  • The ‘self-adhesive’ bond still depends on applying ShaliBond APP at the right dosage (250-300 g/m2 per surface) and catching the 5-15 minute tacky window – rushed or skipped priming, not a membrane defect, is the usual cause of blisters and lifted seams on this product
  • It’s a black bituminous sheet and cannot be left exposed long-term; roofs need a reflective topcoat like SuperSilverShield or a protective screed, which is an extra line item beyond the membrane cost
  • Application is restricted to +5°C to +45°C substrate and ambient temperature, ruling out early monsoon mornings, standing dew, or genuinely cold winter starts
  • Not trafficable on its own – car parks, terraces and walkways need a PCC topping or loose-laid tiles over it before use
  • Cold-bond technique is still less familiar to smaller regional labour gangs than plain torching, so a supervised trial patch on a crew’s first job is worth the half-day it costs
  • Like any felt system, most real-world failures trace back to overlap and parapet/drain detailing rather than the sheet itself – the membrane doesn’t substitute for good workmanship

Selection & best practice

Cure new concrete a full 28 days before laying, and mechanically prepare the deck – scarify or abrasive-blast to remove laitance rather than relying on a broom finish – so the ShaliBond APP primer has something to key into. Build gradient with an admixed screed before waterproofing rather than after, keep drain mouths at least 15 mm below deck level, and grout construction joints ahead of the membrane instead of trying to seal around them later. Apply ShaliBond APP to both the substrate and the peeled membrane at the stated 250-300 g/m2, wait for it to go tacky rather than wet, then roll and press out air from the centre outward. Run overlaps up-slope with seams facing away from water flow – 75 mm on longitudinal joints, 100 mm on transverse – and finish every parapet by cutting the membrane into a groove and sealing it with polymer-modified mortar rather than just draping it over the top. Don’t skip the protective layer: an exposed black membrane through two Delhi summers without a reflective coat or screed will age faster than the data sheet numbers suggest.

Frequently asked questions

Is TarFelt APP a true peel-and-stick membrane?
Not exactly – it’s factory-paired with ShaliBond APP adhesive under a release film, so you still prime the deck and the membrane’s underside with ShaliBond APP and let it go tacky before rolling it out. STP calls it ‘virtually self-adhesive’ because it skips the torch, not because it’s pressure-sensitive out of the box.
Should I use the 1.5 mm or 2 mm thickness?
1.5 mm is the common choice for base-ply or covered applications like podium decks and canal linings that won’t take direct traffic. For exposed terraces, basement tanking, and anywhere puncture resistance matters more, the 2 mm sheet is the safer spec for a modest extra cost.
Can the membrane stay exposed on a terrace without any topcoat?
No. It’s a bitumen-based product and will degrade under continuous UV exposure. STP’s own recommendation is a reflective topcoat like SuperSilverShield for non-trafficable roofs, or a PCC screed/tile overlay wherever people will walk on it.
What’s the real cost difference versus a plain torch-applied felt?
You add the cost of ShaliBond APP adhesive, which a torch-on job doesn’t need. In practice that’s usually offset by not hiring a torch crew, not renting LPG cylinders and not chasing a hot-works permit, so the net cost is close – and on restricted sites it often works out cheaper once permit delays are factored in.
Can it be laid during monsoon or on a cold winter morning?
No – STP specifies a substrate and ambient temperature window of +5°C to +45°C, and the deck needs to be dry. Standing water, dew or active rain will stop the primer from curing properly, so we schedule this work outside the wettest monsoon weeks and skip early starts in the December-January fog.
Does Space Arc offer application support or a workmanship warranty on this?
As an authorised STP distributor and applicator, we can supply the membrane alone or quote it with trained application and the standard STP material warranty that comes with a certified installation – worth asking for upfront if the consultant’s spec requires it.

How we position STP TarFelt APP

Within STP’s own range, TarFelt APP is meant to be bought alongside ShaliBond APP – the two are sold as a system, and using the membrane without its matching adhesive just pushes the job back to hot-bitumen bonding. STP also sells TarFelt LM, a liquid-applied bituminous membrane for detailing and upstands where a rolled sheet doesn’t fit the geometry; the two are complementary rather than competing choices on the same job. Outside the STP catalogue, the closest genuine equivalent is Fosroc’s Proofex Torchseal 3P/4P range – also an APP-modified, polyester-reinforced bituminous membrane, but built for conventional torch application rather than cold-bonding. A specifier who already trusts a torch crew and wants the stronger MNC brand recognition Fosroc carries on tender documents may still lean toward Proofex Torchseal; a site that can’t get a hot-works permit, or wants to avoid LPG logistics altogether, is exactly where TarFelt APP earns its place instead.
