What is it?

A preformed, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) sheet membrane from UltraTech’s Weather Pro waterproofing chemicals range, used as a loose-laid or mechanically fastened barrier against groundwater and soil moisture.

Where is it used?

Below-grade RCC work — raft foundations, basement rafts and retaining walls, lift pits, water-retaining structures and tunnel linings — wherever a continuous physical barrier is needed before or around the concrete pour.

Why use it?

A factory-made sheet gives a known, consistent thickness and puncture resistance that liquid coatings struggle to match on blinding concrete or soil-facing surfaces, and being inert HDPE it resists chemical attack from sulphates and aggressive groundwater that can degrade bituminous systems over time.

How is it applied?

Rolled out over blinding concrete or compacted sub-grade with overlapped edges for loose-laying, or mechanically fixed to vertical shuttering and retaining faces ahead of backfilling — no torch, flame or adhesive is needed for the standard loose-laid method.

About UltraTech Weather Pro HDPE Membrane

Within UltraTech’s Weather Pro range, the waterproofing chemicals line-up is split into liquid-applied systems (WP+200, Flex, Hi-Flex, Top-Shield) and preformed sheet membranes (APP Membrane, SBS Membrane and this HDPE Membrane). The HDPE variant is the one built specifically for sub-structure work — foundations, basement rafts and tunnels — where the membrane sits under or against concrete rather than exposed on a terrace or wall. Unlike the bituminous APP membrane (torch-applied) or the self-adhesive SBS membrane, UltraTech’s HDPE sheet is designed to be loose-laid or mechanically fastened, which keeps site installation simpler and avoids naked-flame work on a foundation excavation.

For Delhi NCR builders and contractors, the appeal is practical: basement and raft waterproofing has to survive years of contact with sub-soil water, construction traffic during rebar fixing, and the abrasion of backfilling, without anyone being able to inspect or repair it once the slab is poured. A dimensionally stable HDPE sheet, correctly lapped and protected before the pour, removes a lot of that risk compared to a liquid membrane applied on an uneven, often damp blinding surface. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised UltraTech distributor and applicator in the region, supplies the membrane alongside site guidance on lap detailing and penetration sealing — the two things that actually decide whether a below-grade membrane performs over its service life.

The technical insight

The core distinction worth understanding is “sheet vs liquid” for sub-structure waterproofing. Liquid and cementitious systems bond to the substrate and cure in place, which is ideal for wet areas, terraces and walls you can access later. Below a raft or against a retaining wall, however, the membrane will never be seen again, so predictability matters more than adhesion. A preformed HDPE sheet arrives at a controlled thickness with known puncture and tear resistance, and because polyethylene doesn’t absorb water or react with sulphates and chlorides in aggressive ground conditions, it tends to outlast bitumen-based sheets in soils with high salt or sulphate content — a real consideration across parts of the NCR belt with variable groundwater chemistry. The trade-off is that a loose-laid membrane isn’t chemically bonded to the concrete either side of it, so its performance depends entirely on lap integrity: every overlap, corner and pipe penetration is a potential leak path if it isn’t detailed and protected correctly before backfilling or pouring.

Where it is used

  • Raft and strip foundation waterproofing ahead of the RCC pour
  • Basement floor slabs and retaining walls (loose-laid or mechanically fastened)
  • Lift pits, sumps and below-ground water tanks
  • Podium and multi-level basement car-park substructures
  • Tunnel, underpass and culvert linings on infrastructure projects
  • Retaining wall backfill protection on sloped or filled sites
  • STP/ETP and other below-grade civil structures needing a physical water barrier
  • Pile cap and raft junctions where a continuous barrier must run under the entire footprint

Key advantages

  • Factory-controlled thickness gives predictable puncture and tear resistance versus a hand-applied liquid coat
  • HDPE is chemically inert, so it resists sulphate and chloride attack better than plain bituminous sheets in aggressive ground conditions
  • No torch, flame or wet adhesive needed for loose-laying, which is safer and faster on an open foundation excavation
  • Doesn’t require the substrate to be fully dry or primed the way most liquid membranes do
  • Sits within UltraTech’s wider Weather Pro range, so the same supplier covers wet-area, terrace and sub-structure waterproofing on one project
  • Dimensionally stable — doesn’t shrink, sag or thin out the way some site-mixed coatings can on vertical faces
  • Backed by UltraTech’s pan-India dealer and technical service network, useful for large or phased infrastructure jobs
  • Straightforward to inspect during laying, since laps and seams are visible before the pour covers them

Limitations & considerations

  • Performance depends almost entirely on lap and seam quality — a poorly overlapped joint is a direct leak path once concrete is poured
  • Not chemically bonded to the substrate, so water that gets past a failed lap can migrate laterally between the membrane and concrete before finding a crack
  • Pipe penetrations, column starter bars and other complex geometry need proprietary boots or mastic detailing; the sheet itself doesn’t solve these junctions
  • Installation quality is very site-supervision dependent — this is not a forgiving ‘apply and forget’ product the way a liquid coating can be
  • Once concrete is poured or backfill placed, the membrane is essentially inaccessible, so any installation defect becomes a very expensive repair
  • Not a substitute for internal wet-area waterproofing — bathrooms and similar areas are better served by UltraTech’s own Bathroom Waterproofing Membrane/Kit in the same range

Selection & best practice

Prepare a clean, reasonably level blinding concrete surface before laying — sharp aggregate, protruding rebar or debris under the membrane is the single most common cause of early puncture. Maintain generous overlaps at every joint (treat manufacturer-specified minimums as a floor, not a target) and tape or weld laps rather than relying on friction alone. On vertical faces, mechanically fasten the membrane to prevent slippage before backfilling rather than depending on gravity or adhesive tack. Seal every pipe, conduit and rebar penetration individually with a proper boot or mastic collar — this is where most below-grade leaks actually originate, not in the field of the membrane. Protect the laid membrane with a screed, protection board or sand blinding before rebar-fixing traffic and concrete pours begin, and inspect all laps visually just before the pour is called — once concrete goes in, defects are no longer fixable without breaking out. For large basements or infrastructure jobs, it’s worth having Space Arc’s applicator team walk the laps before cover-up rather than relying on general site labour alone.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as UltraTech’s liquid waterproofing products like WP+200 or Flex?
No — WP+200 is a cement-integral liquid and Flex/Hi-Flex are liquid-applied coatings for wet areas and terraces. The HDPE Membrane is a preformed sheet built specifically for foundations, basements and tunnels, laid before or during the concrete pour rather than painted on afterward.
Can it go on vertical basement walls, or only under the raft?
Both. It’s typically loose-laid under rafts and floor slabs, and mechanically fastened to vertical shuttering or retaining faces before backfilling, since gravity alone won’t hold a sheet in place on a vertical surface.
How is it different from UltraTech’s own APP and SBS membranes?
All three are preformed sheets in the same Weather Pro range, but APP is bituminous and torch-applied, SBS is bituminous and self-adhesive, while the HDPE Membrane is loose-laid or mechanically fixed with no flame or adhesive required — generally the preferred choice for large foundation and tunnel areas.
What happens at pipe penetrations and construction joints?
These are the weak points of any sheet membrane and need dedicated detailing — proprietary boots or mastic collars at pipe entries, and properly lapped, taped or welded joints at every seam and corner. The sheet itself doesn’t solve these junctions on its own.
Does the membrane need protection before the concrete pour or backfill?
Yes. A screed, protection board or sand blinding over the laid membrane before rebar-fixing traffic and concreting protects it from punctures — this is standard practice and worth budgeting for on any basement job.
Does Space Arc supply and install this in Delhi NCR?
Yes, Space Arc Engineering is an authorised UltraTech distributor and applicator and supplies the HDPE Membrane along with site guidance on lap detailing, penetration sealing and installation QA across the NCR region.

How we position UltraTech Weather Pro HDPE Membrane

Within UltraTech’s own Weather Pro family, this HDPE Membrane sits at the sub-structure end of the range — pair it with WP+200 (integral waterproofing for the concrete mix itself) for a belt-and-braces foundation strategy, and hand off to Flex, Hi-Flex or Top-Shield once you move above ground to wet areas and terraces. Where a project has the option of a bituminous sheet instead, UltraTech’s own APP Membrane (torch-applied) or SBS Membrane (self-adhesive) are the in-range alternatives, chosen mainly on installation method rather than performance. Outside the UltraTech range, Fosroc’s Nitoproof 600 is a genuine alternative worth naming: it’s a liquid-applied, moisture-cured polyurethane membrane for the same foundation/basement/tunnel applications, and specifiers dealing with substrates that have heavy penetrations, irregular geometry or numerous pipe entries — where clean sheet-membrane laps are hard to guarantee — often prefer its seamless, joint-free application over a sheet-and-overlap system. For straightforward, large, relatively unbroken foundation areas, though, the UltraTech HDPE Membrane’s lower cost per square metre and simpler site logistics usually make it the more practical specification.
