Sika SikaCeram-488 Floor Leveler
A self-smoothing, polymer-modified cementitious underlayment that flattens interior subfloors from 2 to 15 mm in one pour, ready for tiles or resilient flooring within hours.
What is it?
A one-part, polymer-modified cementitious self-levelling compound that flows out to a smooth, flat plane over an uneven interior subfloor.
Where is it used?
Interior residential and light-commercial floors — apartments, villas, offices, hotels and retail — under ceramic and porcelain tiles, vinyl, linoleum and carpet.
Why use it?
It corrects level and surface irregularities quickly so the final floor finish sits flat, bonds properly and lasts, without hand-screeding.
How is it applied?
Prime the substrate, mix one 20 kg bag with 4.6-5.0 L of water using a slow-speed paddle, pour and spread; it self-levels and takes foot traffic in about 3 hours.
About Sika SikaCeram-488 Floor Leveler
SikaCeram-488 Floor Leveler is Sika’s self-smoothing underlayment for the stage most projects underestimate: getting the subfloor genuinely flat before anything permanent goes down on it. It is a factory-blended dry powder of Portland cement, graded aggregates and polymers that you simply gauge with water on site. Once poured, it flows and settles under its own weight into a level plane, filling the dips, ridges and trowel marks that a bare concrete or screed surface almost always carries. The result is a hard, closed, dust-free bed at a thickness of 2 to 15 mm in a single pass — the working range where most tiling and resilient-flooring failures actually originate.
For contractors and site engineers in India, the appeal is speed matched to reliability. A floor levelled in the morning is walkable in roughly three hours and can usually accept tiles the same day, which keeps a finishing sequence moving instead of stalling for a slow screed to cure. It is an interior product, engineered for residential and non-industrial commercial spaces rather than heavy plant floors, and it is designed to work as a system with Sika’s own primer and tile adhesives. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Sika distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, with the technical back-up to specify primer, thickness and finish correctly for the substrate in front of you.
The technical insight
The performance comes from two things working together: particle grading and polymer modification. The aggregate is graded so the wet mix has enough fluidity to self-level yet holds its aggregates in suspension rather than bleeding or segregating — which is why the water dose is tight and non-negotiable. Adding more than 5.0 litres to a 20 kg bag buys easier flow but robs the compound of strength and invites shrinkage cracking and a weak, dusty top. The polymers give the cured layer its cohesion and adhesion, letting a film only a couple of millimetres thick key firmly to a primed substrate and resist the shear a tile bed later imposes. Priming is the other half of the mechanism: a bare cementitious surface is porous and drinks water out of the fresh compound too fast, starving cement hydration at the interface. The primer (SikaCeram-935) seals that porosity and creates a bonded, controlled surface, which is why adhesion is quoted on a primed substrate and skipping the primer is the most common cause of debonding or a chalky finish.
Where it is used
- Levelling interior concrete or cement-screed subfloors before ceramic and porcelain tiling
- Smoothing subfloors ahead of vinyl, linoleum and other resilient sheet or plank flooring
- Preparing floors to receive carpet in offices, hotels and residences
- Correcting surface irregularities, trowel marks and minor undulations in new screeds
- Re-flattening worn or uneven existing floors during renovation and fit-out
- Blinding coat over rough substrates to give a closed, dust-free finish
- Level correction in apartments, villas, offices, retail units and hotel rooms
- Application by hand trowel or by pump for larger continuous floor areas
Key advantages
- Self-smoothing — flows and settles into a flat plane, cutting manual screeding labour
- Wide 2-15 mm single-application range covers most levelling needs in one pour
- Fast turnaround: foot traffic in about 3 hours, tiling in roughly 4-6 hours
- Develops real strength — at least 20 N/mm² compressive at 28 days
- One-part powder gauged only with water; simple, repeatable site mixing
- Compatible as a system with SikaCeram cementitious tile adhesives and primer
- Very low emission, suited to occupied and interior fit-out environments
- Accepts a broad range of finishes — tiles, vinyl, linoleum and carpet
Limitations & considerations
- Interior use only — not intended for external or heavy industrial/plant floors
- Single-lift thickness capped at 15 mm; deeper level corrections need a different product
- Requires priming (SikaCeram-935); applying directly to bare substrate risks debonding and dusting
- Water dose is tight (max 5.0 L per 20 kg bag) — over-watering weakens the layer and causes cracking
- Must not be applied over substrates with rising moisture unless a damp-proof membrane is in place
- Short ~20-minute pot life means mixed material has to be poured and spread promptly
Selection & best practice
Get the substrate right first: it must be sound, clean, free of laitance, oil and loose material, and dry — never apply over rising damp without an effective damp-proof membrane underneath. Apply SikaCeram-935 primer and let it develop before pouring. Keep ambient and substrate temperature between +10°C and +35°C and relative humidity around 75% or below. Mix one 20 kg bag with 4.6-5.0 L of clean water (never more) using a slow single- or twin-paddle mixer under 600 rpm with a helical disc paddle until lump-free, then pour and spread within the ~20-minute pot life, working a full bay wet-on-wet to avoid cold joints. Reckon coverage at about 1.55 kg of powder per m² per mm of thickness. Protect the fresh surface from direct sun, draughts and fast drying while it sets, and hold off tiling until it has taken the recommended few hours.

Industry use cases
Residential fit-out
Levelling floors in apartments and villas before porcelain tiles or vinyl, so the finish sits flat with no lippage across large open living areas.
Corporate offices
Fast subfloor preparation under carpet tiles and resilient flooring during tight fit-out windows, with floors walkable the same day.
Hospitality
Smoothing guest-room and corridor floors in hotels ahead of tiles or luxury vinyl, where a flat, quiet, well-bonded floor matters.
Retail interiors
Re-flattening uneven or renovated shop floors before ceramic tiling or sheet flooring, keeping store turnaround short.
Renovation
Correcting worn, patchy or out-of-level existing screeds during refurbishment to give a clean, closed base for a new floor finish.

How we position Sika SikaCeram-488 Floor Leveler
SikaCeram-488 works best specified as part of the Sika tile-installation system: pair it with SikaCeram-935 Floor Leveler Primer underneath and finish over it with a SikaCeram cementitious tile adhesive for a fully compatible, warranty-friendly build-up. Use it where the level correction sits within 2-15 mm and the floor is interior and light-duty. When the substrate needs deeper re-profiling — 12 mm and beyond — step up to Fosroc Nitoflor Levelcrete, which we also stock, or discuss a screed solution with our team. For heavy-traffic industrial or plant floors, look instead at a dedicated industrial flooring topping rather than a tiling underlayment. Space Arc supplies the full Sika, Fosroc and Dr. Fixit ranges, so we can match primer, leveller, adhesive and any waterproofing into one coherent flooring package for your site.
Fosroc Nitoflor Levelcrete — Choose the Fosroc option when the floor needs deeper re-profiling than SikaCeram-488’s 15 mm ceiling — Levelcrete self-levels in thick beds from 12 mm up to 80 mm in a single pour.
