Sika SikaCeram-250 StarFix
A deformable, slip-resistant C2TE S1 cementitious adhesive built for large-format vitrified tiles, natural stone and demanding wet or exterior areas.
What is it?
A one-component, polymer-modified cementitious tile adhesive classified C2TE S1 under EN 12004 — meaning improved bond, extended open time, reduced slip and genuine deformability for movement-prone surfaces.
Where is it used?
Bathrooms, kitchens, balconies, terraces, facades, swimming pools and heavy-traffic commercial floors, both indoors and outdoors, over cementitious substrates.
Why use it?
It holds heavy large-format porcelain and stone without slumping, absorbs minor substrate movement, and stays bonded after water immersion, heat ageing and freeze-thaw.
How is it applied?
Mix 6.0 litres of clean water into a 20 kg bag, comb onto the substrate with a notched trowel at 1-5 mm, back-butter large tiles, and bed within the open time.
About Sika SikaCeram-250 StarFix
SikaCeram-250 StarFix is Sika’s deformable, high-performance thin-bed adhesive for projects where ordinary tile cement simply will not hold. Formulated from Portland cement, graded aggregates, water-retention additives and re-dispersible polymers, it carries the EN 12004 classification C2TE S1 — the “C2” confirming improved adhesion, “T” reduced vertical slip, “E” extended open time, and “S1” a transverse deformation of at least 2.5 mm. That last letter matters most in Indian construction: it lets the adhesive flex with the small movements of screeds, balconies and heated floors instead of debonding under stress.
Because it is a single-component powder, there is no separate latex to measure or store — you add only water on site, which keeps the mix consistent from the first bag to the last. The grey powder gives roughly four hours of pot life at 20°C and an open time of thirty minutes or more, so tilers can spread ahead of themselves and still achieve full transfer. For the specifier, StarFix sits above general-purpose C1 adhesives and alongside Sika’s other C2 deformable options, making it a dependable default whenever the tile is large, non-absorbent, or headed for a wet or exterior location. Space Arc Engineering supplies it across Delhi NCR and Pan-India with application guidance for the substrate you are actually working on.
The technical insight
The performance comes from the interplay of two things: water retention and polymer film formation. Water-retention additives stop a thirsty screed or the back of a porcelain tile from pulling moisture out of the fresh mix too quickly, so the cement gets the water it needs to hydrate fully at the bond line rather than starving and powdering. As it cures, the re-dispersible polymer particles coalesce into a continuous flexible film that laces through the cement matrix — this is what carries the S1 deformability and lets the joint accommodate thermal and structural movement. The “T” no-slip rheology keeps heavy tiles from sliding down a wall while the adhesive is still green, and the extended “E” open time buys the tiler enough working window to comb, position and adjust before the surface skins over. Together these give the ≥1 N/mm² tensile bond that StarFix retains not just when dry, but after water immersion, heat ageing and freeze-thaw cycling — the four conditions that separate a true C2 adhesive from a basic one.
Where it is used
- Fixing large-format vitrified and porcelain tiles up to 10,000 cm2 (e.g. 60×120 cm) on outdoor cementitious substrates
- Bonding ceramic, marble, granite and natural stone on walls and non-heated floors up to 7,000 cm2 (e.g. 80×80 cm)
- Bathroom, wet-room and kitchen wall and floor tiling where water exposure is constant
- Balcony, terrace and external facade tiling exposed to thermal cycling and rain
- Swimming pool and water-retaining structure tiling in continuously submerged conditions
- Heavy-traffic commercial and industrial floors requiring a deformable bond
- Tiling over screeds and renders prone to minor movement, using the S1 flexibility
- Back-buttering of tiles over 900 cm2 to guarantee full contact and no voids
Key advantages
- C2TE S1 classification — improved bond, extended open time, no slip and true deformability in one product
- Single-component powder: only water added on site, no separate polymer liquid to store or mis-dose
- Deformable S1 film (transverse deformation >=2.5 mm) absorbs substrate movement instead of cracking the bond
- Retains >=1 N/mm2 tensile adhesion after water immersion, heat ageing and freeze-thaw
- No vertical slip, so heavy wall tiles stay put while the adhesive cures
- Extended open time (30 minutes or more) gives tilers a comfortable working window
- Suitable for both absorbent and non-absorbent tiles, indoors and outdoors
- Frost-resistant and pool-rated for wet, submerged and exterior exposure
Limitations & considerations
- Grey colour only — for translucent glass mosaic or light natural stone where bleed-through matters, a white-bodied adhesive is preferable
- Thin-bed adhesive with a 1-5 mm layer — it is not a levelling or dubbing-out compound for uneven substrates
- Full performance depends on a sound, cured, dust-free cementitious substrate; it is not intended for gypsum or metal without correct priming
- Water dosage must be held close to 6.0 litres per 20 kg bag — over-watering to improve workability reduces strength
- Open time is temperature-sensitive; in hot, dry or windy conditions the surface skins faster and must be re-combed if it films over
- Not an epoxy — for aggressive chemical exposure or industrial acid environments an epoxy-based adhesive and grout are required
Selection & best practice
Start with a substrate that is structurally sound, fully cured, clean and free of laitance, oil and loose material; dampen very absorbent backgrounds and prime where the datasheet calls for it. Add the powder to 6.0 litres of clean water per 20 kg bag (not the reverse), mix mechanically to a lump-free paste, and allow it to slake before a brief re-stir. Comb the adhesive onto the substrate with a notched trowel sized to the tile — a 6 mm notch for small tiles up to a 10 mm notch for large ones — keeping the ribs in one direction so air can escape. For any tile above 900 cm2, and for all natural stone and exterior work, back-butter the tile as well to reach the full contact area, then bed and beat in firmly with a slight twist. Work only as much adhesive as you can tile within the open time; if the surface has skinned over and no longer transfers to the tile, re-comb rather than tiling onto a dead skin. Protect fresh work, then wait roughly 24 hours indoors (48 hours outdoors) before grouting or foot traffic. Always confirm dosage and waiting times against the current Sika product data sheet for your batch.

Industry use cases
Residential high-rise
Fixing 60×120 cm porcelain slabs on apartment walls and floors where large formats and building movement rule out ordinary C1 cement.
Hospitality & wet areas
Hotel bathrooms, spas and pool decks needing a frost- and water-resistant bond that survives constant wetting and cleaning cycles.
Commercial & retail floors
Malls, lobbies and showrooms where heavy foot traffic demands a deformable adhesive that will not fatigue and debond under load.
Facades & exteriors
External cladding, balconies and terraces exposed to sun, rain and thermal cycling, where the S1 flexibility protects the joint.
Natural stone installation
Marble, granite and limestone fixed with back-buttering for full contact, avoiding the voids that cause hollow, cracked stone.
Frequently asked questions
What does the C2TE S1 rating on SikaCeram-250 StarFix actually mean?
Can I use it for large-format vitrified tiles outdoors?
How much water do I add and how much does one bag cover?

How we position Sika SikaCeram-250 StarFix
Within the Sika range, SikaCeram-250 StarFix is the deformable C2 workhorse. Where you only need a general-purpose bond for small absorbent tiles in dry areas, step down to SikaCeram-50 Tilofix (C1T) or SikaCeram-125 Easy Fix (C1TE). For large thin panels and heavier movement, SikaCeram-288 Flex S1 and SikaCeram-255 Large Tile are close C2 siblings worth comparing, while SikaCeram-155 Wet Room and SikaCeram-212 Non-Slip cover specific wet and vertical-slip cases. Complete the system with SikaCeram-638 Colour Grout Super or the epoxy SikaCeram-888 Tile Grout EP for joints, and Sika SealTape F for waterproofing junctions before tiling. If a project is standardised on Fosroc, the equivalent selection sits in Fosroc’s Nitotile range — a specifier tied to that supply chain would look at Fosroc’s C2 and S1 Nitotile grades rather than mixing brands mid-project; talk to Space Arc for the current Fosroc match and stock.
