Master Builders Solutions MasterRoc SLP (soil-conditioning polymers)
The liquid polymer booster that keeps EPB tunnel boring machines cutting cleanly through wet sand, silt and mixed ground without clogging or losing face pressure.
What is it?
A ready-to-use, transparent liquid polymer that is injected into an Earth Pressure Balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine to enhance soil conditioning in difficult ground.
Where is it used?
Metro, road, rail and utility tunnel drives using EPB shield machines, particularly through poorly graded, water-saturated sand, silt and mixed alluvial strata.
Why use it?
It restores controlled face pressure, cuts inner friction and abrasiveness, and helps the excavated soil form a proper ‘plug’ in the screw conveyor when foam alone cannot manage sticky or waterlogged ground.
How is it applied?
Dosed directly into the foaming solution, the working chamber or the screw conveyor at 0.2-2 kg per m³ of soil in situ, with the exact rate set on site against the actual grading and moisture of the ground being cut.
About Master Builders Solutions MasterRoc SLP (soil-conditioning polymers)
MasterRoc SLP 1 belongs to a category most building-materials buyers never encounter but every EPB tunnelling contractor knows intimately: soil conditioning chemicals for mechanised tunnel boring. When an EPB shield advances, the excavated ground has to be turned into a plastic, low-permeability paste inside the cutterhead chamber – too stiff and torque spikes and tools wear out, too loose and groundwater or loose sand rushes in and the face collapses. Foaming agents (Master Builders Solutions markets these as the MasterRoc SLF range) do most of that work, but in fine sand, silt, clay-sand transitions or highly water-saturated ground, foam alone often cannot hold the mix together. MasterRoc SLP 1 is the polymer that is brought in to fix exactly that gap.
Functionally, it is a booster rather than a stand-alone conditioner: it is blended into the foaming solution or injected separately into the chamber or screw conveyor to give the conditioned soil the plastic-deformation behaviour, reduced permeability and stronger viscosity that keep support pressure even across the tunnel face. For Indian metro and utility tunnelling through Gangetic and coastal alluvium – where drives regularly pass through pockets of fine sand, silt and clay within a single ring – that adaptability is the whole point of specifying it. Space Arc sources MasterRoc SLP 1 through Master Builders Solutions’ tunnelling channel for contractors running EPB drives across Delhi NCR and pan-India metro, road and water-infrastructure projects.
The technical insight
The manufacturer does not publish the exact polymer chemistry, but the technical data sheet is specific about what it does mechanically: it lowers the internal friction and abrasiveness of the cut soil, raises cohesion in coarser sands and sandy gravels, and imparts a strong viscosifying effect that turns wet, sloppy ground into a manageable, plastic mass. Injected directly into the screw conveyor, it also assists the formation of the “plug” – the compacted soil column that seals the conveyor and lets the machine hold differential pressure between the excavation chamber and atmosphere. That plug is what actually keeps an EPB face pressure-balanced; if it cannot form because the soil is too fine, too wet, or too poorly graded, the whole conditioning strategy behind the drive breaks down regardless of how well the foam is dosed. MasterRoc SLP 1 is priced and packaged for exactly that failure mode – it is a liquid polymer trim, not a replacement for the primary foam system.
Where it is used
- EPB shield TBM drives through poorly graded, water-saturated sand and silt
- Metro and urban transit tunnelling through mixed alluvial sequences of sand, silt and clay
- Sewer, storm-water and utility tunnel drives run on EPB machines
- Boosting MasterRoc SLF foam performance in sticky, clogging-prone strata
- Assisting screw-conveyor ‘plug’ formation to hold face pressure balance
- Reducing cutterhead and conveyor wear from abrasive sandy or gravelly ground
- Ground with heavy water inflow where face permeability needs to be brought down
- Mixed-face conditions combining fine sand/silt pockets with sandy gravel
Key advantages
- Ready-to-use liquid – no on-site mixing plant or batching equipment required
- Works as a targeted booster alongside existing MasterRoc SLF foaming agents rather than replacing the whole conditioning regime
- Dosage is field-adjustable, so crews can respond to changing ground without halting the drive
- Improves face stability through controlled plastic-deformation behaviour in the conditioned soil
- Cuts inner friction and abrasiveness, protecting cutterhead tools and the screw conveyor
- Fully water-soluble, which keeps handling and injection straightforward
- Backed by Master Builders Solutions’ long-standing global TBM tunnelling track record
- 12-month shelf life in sealed drums or IBCs gives project planners a workable buffer for import lead times
Limitations & considerations
- Works only as a conditioning aid alongside the TBM’s existing foam/injection system – it is not a substitute for a properly designed foam dosing regime
- Effectiveness is soil-specific; the wrong dosage for the ground grading can under-condition (clogging, torque spikes) or over-lubricate (loss of face support)
- As an imported specialty tunnelling chemical it is not a shelf-stock item in India, so lead time has to be built into the TBM consumables schedule
- Storage window is narrow (5-35°C) and the product must not be allowed to freeze, which needs attention during import logistics and site storage in peak Indian summer
- The technical data sheet does not cite an IS/BS/EN performance standard – acceptance is by manufacturer TDS and site trial dosing, not by a codified construction-material standard
- Has no structural, sealing or waterproofing function of its own – it does not replace grouting or waterproofing systems used elsewhere in the tunnel lining
Selection & best practice
Treat dosage as a site variable, not a fixed number. The manufacturer’s own range – 0.2 to 2 kg per m³ of soil in situ – is wide because it has to cover everything from lightly damp sand to fully saturated silt, so run a trial dosing exercise with the TBM’s geotechnical/conditioning engineer against the actual grading curve and moisture content before locking a rate into the drive plan. Keep drums and IBCs stored between 5°C and 35°C, shaded from direct sun on an open tunnelling yard, and never let a consignment freeze in transit; a frozen container should be checked with Master Builders Solutions before use rather than assumed safe. Because it is imported and not warehouse stock, order it against the TBM’s consumables schedule alongside the SLF foam requirement, not as a reactive purchase once clogging problems appear on the drive.

Industry use cases
Urban metro tunnelling
EPB drives through Gangetic alluvium sequences of fine sand, silt and clay typical of Delhi NCR, Lucknow and Kolkata metro alignments, where ground can change within a single tunnel ring.
Water and sewer tunnelling
Utility tunnel drives in saturated, poorly graded ground where face permeability needs to be brought down to control water inflow at the cutterhead.
Mixed-face ground conditions
Stretches combining pockets of sticky fine sand/silt with sandy gravel, where foam alone struggles to hold a consistent plug in the screw conveyor.
High water-table excavation
Drives below the water table in loose, saturated sand where increased cohesion and reduced permeability are needed to maintain face stability.
Wear-sensitive drives
Long EPB runs through abrasive sandy or gravelly strata where lowering soil abrasiveness helps protect cutterhead tools and conveyor wear parts.

How we position Master Builders Solutions MasterRoc SLP (soil-conditioning polymers)
MasterRoc SLP 1 sits inside Master Builders Solutions’ MasterRoc TBM range rather than as a standalone purchase – contractors specifying it typically pair it with the MasterRoc SLF foaming agents (SLF 32, SLF 41, SLF 75, SLF 543) for the base soil conditioning, MasterRoc ACP 143 where anti-clogging performance in sticky clays is the dominant problem, and MasterRoc SWA 710 where permeability control against high water pressure is the priority. Space Arc’s role for Indian EPB contractors is coordinating that whole conditioning package – foam, polymer and thickener – against a single drive’s ground profile rather than sourcing chemicals piecemeal.
This is a narrow, tunnelling-specific niche where Fosroc does not field a genuine equivalent product – its India range is concentrated on waterproofing, concrete repair, grouting and flooring rather than mechanised-tunnelling process chemicals, so there is no honest Fosroc cross-sell here. Contractors benchmarking MasterRoc SLP 1 more realistically compare it against Sika’s and Mapei’s TBM soil-conditioning ranges and specialist tunnelling-chemical suppliers such as Normet, all of which compete in the same EPB conditioning space Master Builders Solutions has built MasterRoc TBM around.
