Master Builders Solutions MB Life SF
A densified silica fume admixture from Master Builders Solutions that tightens the cement paste, slashes chloride permeability, and unlocks M60+ strength — sourced and specified by Space Arc for Delhi NCR and pan-India projects.
What is it?
MB Life SF (Master Builders Solutions’ MasterLife SF 100) is a dry, densified silica fume — an ultra-fine pozzolanic byproduct of ferrosilicon smelting — dosed into concrete as a supplementary cementitious material.
Where is it used?
High-strength and marine RCC, metro/bridge substructures, wet-mix shotcrete, sulfate-exposed structures, and precast elements needing early strength.
Why use it?
It micro-fills the gaps between cement grains and reacts with free lime to form extra CSH gel, collapsing capillary porosity — so chloride ingress drops sharply and strength, modulus, and sulfate/ASR resistance all rise.
How is it applied?
Batched at the RMC plant like cement or fly ash — bulk silo, bulk bag, or degradable paper bags straight into the mixer — at 5-15% by mass of cementitious content, always with a PCE superplasticizer.
About Master Builders Solutions MB Life SF
Silica fume — sold worldwide as microsilica — is captured from the fume stream of silicon and ferrosilicon smelting, with particles roughly 100 times finer than ordinary Portland cement. MB Life SF densifies that raw fume into a free-flowing granular form that batches like a powder instead of a nuisance dust. In the mix it works two ways: physically, it packs into the sub-micron gaps between cement grains that water alone leaves open; chemically, it consumes free lime released during hydration to form extra calcium-silicate-hydrate gel — the actual glue behind concrete strength. The result is a paste with far fewer, smaller capillary pores, exactly what low-permeability specifications are chasing.
In India it’s a specialist’s admixture, not a shelf commodity. It appears on drawings for coastal towers and jetties in Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi where chloride ingress governs rebar life; on metro viaduct and bridge pours carrying long design-life clauses; on tunnel and hill-road shotcrete; and on industrial floors facing sulfate exposure. Because correct dosage, trial batching and a compatible superplasticizer all matter, Space Arc doesn’t just supply MB Life SF — we help RMC plants and site teams work out dosage, sequence batching, and validate the trial mix before it goes into a structural pour.
The technical insight
The manufacturer’s own Rapid Chloride Permeability data makes the case: an unmodified mix reading roughly 3,500 coulombs at 0% dosage falls below 500 coulombs once MB Life SF is added at 15% by mass of cement — solidly into the “very low” permeability class used in marine and industrial specs. That comes from a material with specific gravity 2.2, non-chloride and non-corrosive to embedded steel, meeting ASTM C1240 and CSA A3001:23. One practical wrinkle: the degradable dosing bags are meant to disintegrate in the mixer through wetting and abrasion, but in very low w/cm mixes, small-aggregate mixes, or pan mixers they can survive intact and shed fragments on the finished surface — reason enough to trial-batch first. The published TDS (DAT-0091, Aug 2025) is a US/Canada document; Space Arc sources against it and confirms India lead times and batch traceability at order time.
Where it is used
- High-strength structural concrete (M60 and above) — columns, transfer beams, podiums
- Marine and coastal RCC — jetties, seawalls, basement rafts in chloride exposure zones
- Metro viaducts, flyovers and bridge substructures with strict permeability clauses
- Wet-mix shotcrete for tunnel linings and hill-road slope stabilisation
- Water and wastewater treatment structures exposed to sulfate-bearing effluent
- Industrial flooring, silos and tank foundations needing abrasion/chemical resistance
- Precast and prestressed elements where faster early-strength gain shortens cycle time
- Concrete using ASR-susceptible aggregates that need alkali-silica reactivity mitigation
Key advantages
- Cuts chloride-ion permeability (RCPT) by an order of magnitude versus plain concrete
- Raises compressive strength and modulus of elasticity, enabling M60+ mix designs
- Adds cohesion and reduces bleeding, aiding pumpability and finish quality
- Non-chloride, non-corrosive to embedded reinforcing/prestressing and galvanised steel
- Compatible with ASTM/AASHTO/CRD-approved cements and PCE-based superplasticizers
- Manufactured and tested to ASTM C1240 and the CSA A3001:23 SCM standard
- Improves sulfate attack and alkali-silica reactivity resistance in one admixture
- 24-month shelf life, dry storage, no special dispensing equipment required
Limitations & considerations
- Increases water demand on its own — always needs a compatible PCE-based superplasticizer or workability suffers
- Costs meaningfully more than OPC or fly ash per kg, so it needs a genuine durability or strength case
- Degradable dosing bags can fail to fully disintegrate in low-w/cm, small-aggregate or pan-mixer batches — trial batch first
- Not a substitute for adequate cover, crack control or corrosion inhibitors — it’s one layer of a durability strategy
- The published TDS is a US/Canada document; there is no separate India-market TDS, so batch queries route through Space Arc
- Needs trained batching and QC at the RMC plant — dosage errors show up as poor workability or a strength shortfall
Selection & best practice
Trial-batch before every structural pour — 8-10% by mass of cementitious material suits most durability-grade mixes, scaling to 15% for the most aggressive marine or high-strength briefs. Check bag disintegration in your actual mixer type, pair with a PCE-based superplasticizer from the start rather than fixing workability afterward, and extend moist curing past the usual 7 days since the pozzolanic reaction keeps working beyond early age. Store bags off the ground in a dry area exactly as you would cement, and reconcile batch documentation with Space Arc so site QC has traceability back to the TDS revision in force.

Industry use cases
Coastal high-rise / marine structures
Basement raft and shear-wall pours for a Mumbai/Chennai coastal tower specified M50-M60 with MB Life SF to hold RCPT well under the marine-exposure limit and protect rebar.
Metro & bridge infrastructure
Precast segment casting for a metro viaduct where the durability clause demanded both higher strength and a documented permeability ceiling, met without raising cement content.
Tunnelling / hill roads
Wet-mix shotcrete for a hill-road tunnel lining, where the densifying effect cut rebound and gave a tighter, lower-permeability sprayed layer.
Industrial / process plants
Effluent treatment tank and containment slabs exposed to sulfate-bearing waste streams, where sulfate resistance decided the SCM choice.
Precast / prestressed elements
A precast yard used it to accelerate strength gain and shorten the stressing/demoulding cycle without increasing cement content.

How we position Master Builders Solutions MB Life SF
MB Life SF sits in Master Builders Solutions’ MasterLife durability range alongside MasterLife SRA (shrinkage-reducing admixture) and the MasterLife CI corrosion-inhibitor series; Space Arc typically pairs it with a PCE superplasticizer from the MasterGlenium range for workability, and with CI or SRA where the brief also needs corrosion protection or crack control. As a standalone microsilica SCM, its closest market alternatives are Sika’s SikaFume range and Elkem-sourced microsilica supplied through regional RMC blenders. Fosroc’s India admixture catalogue (Conplast, Auramix, Auracast) is strong on plasticizers, corrosion inhibitors and waterproofing but doesn’t currently list a dedicated silica-fume SCM, so it isn’t a genuine substitute here — projects already running a Fosroc admixture programme usually bring MB Life SF in as a complementary addition, not a replacement.
