STP ShaliFloor WB ES 2PU
A low-odour, water-based two-pack polyurethane sealer that adds scratch and abrasion resistance to epoxy and PU floors without the solvent smell.
What is it?
A two-component, water-based polyurethane sealer from STP that dries to a medium-hard, scratch- and abrasion-resistant film over cured epoxy or PU flooring.
Where is it used?
Offices, showrooms, institutional buildings, museums, exhibition halls and light commercial floors where a low-odour, occupied-space finish is needed.
Why use it?
It seals and protects the floor with very low VOC and minimal smell, so it can be applied in ventilated occupied spaces while still improving wear and scratch resistance.
How is it applied?
Roller- or brush-applied in thin coats of 25 to 50 microns dry film thickness over a clean, cured, degreased substrate, recoating within 2 to 4 hours.
About STP ShaliFloor WB ES 2PU
STP’s ShaliFloor WB ES 2PU sits in the family of finishing coats a flooring contractor reaches for once the structural epoxy or PU build has cured and the floor simply needs a tougher, cleaner skin. It is a genuinely water-based two-component polyurethane, which is the point of difference: the crosslinked toughness of a 2K PU system, but carried in water rather than solvent. That means very low VOC and very little odour, so the sealer can go down in a working office, a gallery or a hospital corridor without evacuating the space or fighting ventilation limits that rule out solvent-borne top coats.
The film it forms is medium-hard and deliberately scratch- and abrasion-resistant rather than a thick load-bearing build. Applied at 25 to 50 microns dry film thickness per coat, it is a sealer and protective layer, not a screed. Contractors specify it where an existing epoxy or PU floor is sound but the surface is taking day-to-day scuffing from foot traffic, trolleys and cleaning, and where the client wants the practical benefit of a fresh, defensible top coat without the disruption a solvent system brings. Recoat happens in 2 to 4 hours and full cure develops over 5 to 7 days.
The technical insight
The reason a water-based 2K PU behaves so differently from a single-pack floor varnish is the chemistry that happens after you mix the two components. Component B (the crosslinker) reacts with the polyurethane dispersion in Component A to build a three-dimensional crosslinked network as the water evaporates and the coating coalesces. That crosslink density is what delivers the scratch hardness and abrasion resistance you cannot get from an air-drying, non-reactive sealer. Because the reaction is genuinely thermosetting, the cured film also resists the softening and marking that plague thermoplastic waterborne coatings under warm, trafficked conditions. The trade-off is a working window: once mixed, the material has a limited pot life and must be used within it, and the film needs its full 5 to 7 day cure before it reaches its rated hardness and chemical resistance. The 25 to 50 micron per-coat thickness is intentional too — thin, well-coalesced coats crosslink uniformly and adhere strongly to the underlying epoxy or PU, whereas over-thick application traps water, mars coalescence and undermines the interlayer bond that makes this a reliable top coat.
Where it is used
- Scratch- and abrasion-resistant sealer coat over cured epoxy floor systems
- Protective top coat over polyurethane self-levelling and screed floors
- Refresh and re-seal coat on worn but structurally sound existing floors
- Low-odour finishing coat for occupied offices and commercial interiors
- Sealer for institutional floors in schools, hospitals and administrative buildings
- Clear protective layer for museum, gallery and exhibition-hall floors
- Concrete floor sealer for light-duty office and showroom areas
- Finishing coat where anti-skid, medium-hard surface texture is required
Key advantages
- Water-based with very low VOC and minimal odour, suitable for occupied and poorly ventilated spaces
- Two-pack crosslinked PU chemistry gives real scratch and abrasion resistance, not just a varnish sheen
- Strong interlayer adhesion onto cured epoxy and PU floor systems
- Fast recoat window of 2 to 4 hours keeps multi-coat jobs on schedule
- Available in high-gloss or matte finish to match the specification
- Roller- and brush-friendly for straightforward site application
- Cleaner, safer working environment than solvent-borne top coats
- Adds a defensible, renewable wear layer that protects the more expensive floor build beneath
Limitations & considerations
- Not intended for heavy industrial duty; solvent-based STP systems such as TC 2PU or a 2 HBE build are preferred where durability demands are higher
- It is a thin-film sealer at 25 to 50 microns per coat, not a load-bearing or self-levelling build
- Being a two-component reactive product, it has a limited pot life once mixed and must be used within it
- Needs a fully cured, clean, dry and degreased substrate; it will not rescue a failing or contaminated floor beneath
- Full hardness and chemical resistance only develop after the 5 to 7 day cure, so traffic must be staged accordingly
- Water-based application is sensitive to low temperature and high humidity, which slow coalescence and cure
Selection & best practice
Treat it as a finishing operation, not a repair. Confirm the underlying epoxy or PU floor is fully cured, sound and firmly bonded, then clean and degrease thoroughly so there is no oil, dust or laitance to break the interlayer bond. Lightly abrade glossy existing coatings to give the sealer a key. Mix Component A and B in the correct ratio, use the mixed material within its pot life, and apply in thin, even coats of 25 to 50 microns dry film thickness by roller or brush — resist the temptation to lay it on thick, which traps water and weakens the bond. Recoat within the 2 to 4 hour window while the first coat is still receptive. Keep the area ventilated and within a sensible temperature and humidity range so the water flashes off and the film coalesces properly, and stage foot and wheeled traffic against the 5 to 7 day full-cure schedule rather than the touch-dry time.

Industry use cases
Corporate & commercial offices
Re-sealing and protecting existing epoxy or PU floors in occupied office space, where the very low odour lets work proceed over a weekend without evacuating staff.
Museums & exhibition halls
A clear, medium-hard protective layer for gallery and exhibition floors that must look clean and resist scuffing from footfall and display movement.
Healthcare & institutional
Low-VOC finishing coat for hospital corridors, laboratories and school floors where solvent odour and ventilation limits rule out solvent-borne top coats.
Showrooms & retail
Scratch-resistant sealer over decorative epoxy floors in showrooms, giving a defensible gloss or matte finish that survives trolley and foot traffic.
Facility maintenance & refurbishment
A renewable wear layer that facilities teams can reapply to worn but sound floors, extending the life of the original, more expensive floor build.

How we position STP ShaliFloor WB ES 2PU
ShaliFloor WB ES 2PU is the low-odour finishing coat in STP’s flooring range, so the honest cross-sell stays within that family and our wider flooring lines. Where the duty is heavier or UV exposure matters, step up to STP ShaliFloor TC 2PU, the 2K aliphatic UV-resistant top coat, or ShaliFloor 2AC PU TC for a harder acrylic-PU finish; for antistatic requirements, ShaliFloor SL AS 3PU is the self-levelling route. If the floor itself needs building or repair before sealing — not just a top coat — the epoxy self-levelling and screed systems are the correct starting point, with this WB sealer used only as the final protective skin. Across our other brands, specifiers who want a comparable low-VOC finish can also consider water-based PU top coats from Fosroc’s flooring range; our team can match the right system to the traffic, chemical exposure and occupancy constraints of the project rather than defaulting to a single product.
