About STP ShaliPrime Zn Ph 60

STP ShaliPrime Zn Ph 60 is the anti-corrosive foundation coat that most consultants specify when a steel structure has to survive years of humidity, condensation and industrial exposure. It is a two-pack epoxy system: a zinc-phosphate-pigmented resin base cured with an amine hardener. The zinc phosphate is not just filler colour; it is an inhibitive pigment that reacts at the steel interface to slow the electrochemical process that causes rust. The formulation is deliberately lead-free, which keeps it compliant with modern health and environmental norms and makes it acceptable for water-contact steelwork such as treatment plant assets.

For an Indian specifier, the practical appeal is that ShaliPrime Zn Ph 60 conforms to IS 13238, the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for epoxy zinc phosphate primers, and carries BIS marking. That matters on government, PSU and infrastructure tenders where the primer must be a certified conforming product, not a generic paint. Supplied as a grey, smooth matt to eggshell coat, it lays down an even film that both bonds tightly to correctly prepared steel and gives excellent intercoat adhesion to epoxy, polyurethane and MIO topcoats in a full protective-coating stack.

The technical insight

Corrosion of steel is an electrochemical reaction: anodic and cathodic sites form on the surface, and in the presence of moisture and oxygen, iron goes into solution as rust. A barrier primer alone only delays this by keeping water out; once the film is breached at a scratch or holiday, undercutting begins. ShaliPrime Zn Ph 60 works on a second, active principle. The zinc phosphate pigment is slightly soluble, so at any defect it releases phosphate ions that react with exposed iron to form a stable, insoluble passivating layer, effectively repairing the electrochemical weak point. Combined with the dense, chemically resistant epoxy binder, you get both barrier protection and inhibitive protection in one coat. The amine cure gives a hard, cross-linked film with strong adhesion and solvent resistance, which is why it holds up as the tie coat beneath aggressive finish systems rather than delaminating under them.

• Priming fabricated structural steel: columns, beams, trusses, pipe racks and gantries before erection
• Anti-corrosion base coat on plant and process equipment, skids and machinery frames

Limitations & considerations

• It is a primer, not a finish; it needs a suitable topcoat for UV and full weather durability

• As a 2K product it has a limited pot life once mixed and must be used within that window
• Not a substitute for zinc-rich (galvanic) primers where the most severe C4/C5 corrosion class is specified
• Application is temperature and humidity sensitive; curing slows and film quality suffers in cold or damp conditions
