What is it?

A ready-to-use, water-based liquid from STP Limited that chemically converts rust on iron and steel into a stable bluish-black layer, and doubles as the primer coat for subsequent painting.

Where is it used?

Rusted structural steel, tank exteriors, sheet metal, gates, railings, fences, trailers and plant equipment — wherever blast cleaning is impractical or uneconomical.

Why use it?

One product arrests active rust and primes the surface in the same operation, cutting surface-preparation labour and downtime on maintenance painting.

How is it applied?

Brush two coats onto a wire-brushed, firm, bone-dry surface above 10°C; apply the second coat at touch-dry and a UV-resistant topcoat after 48 hours.

About STP ShaliPrime RC

ShaliPrime RC is STP Limited’s answer to a problem every maintenance engineer in India knows well: steel that has rusted in service but cannot realistically be blast-cleaned back to bright metal. Instead of removing the corrosion, this single-component, water-based liquid reacts with it. Brushed directly over sound, wire-brushed rust, it converts the iron oxide into a stable bluish-black layer that seals out moisture and stops the corrosion cell from progressing — while simultaneously leaving a primed surface ready for a protective topcoat.

Because it arrives ready to use in a 1 L container, there is no mixing, no pot-life clock and no specialist equipment — a brush and basic surface cleaning are enough. That makes it particularly suited to distributed maintenance work: railings across a housing complex, pipe supports through a plant, or tank exteriors at a depot. Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine STP stock with technical support across Delhi NCR and pan-India.

The technical insight

Conventional primers only perform on cleanly prepared steel — paint over active rust and the corrosion simply continues underneath the film. ShaliPrime RC works differently: its blend of selected chemicals and organic polymers reacts with iron oxide itself, binding the loose, porous rust into a chemically stable complex. The reaction announces itself visibly — the treated surface turns bluish-black — which gives site engineers a simple quality check that conversion has actually occurred before topcoating. The organic polymer fraction then dries into a film that seals the converted layer against moisture and oxygen, functioning as the primer coat. The practical consequence is that surface preparation drops from abrasive blasting to wire-brushing off loose flakes — a major saving on live plants and occupied premises where blasting is disruptive or simply not permitted.

Where it is used

  • Maintenance repainting of rusted structural steel — columns, beams, pipe supports and platforms
  • External surfaces of storage tanks showing surface corrosion
  • Sheet-metal roofing, cladding and ducting
  • Gates, grills, fences and iron railings in residential and commercial premises
  • Older steel structures and bridge components where blast cleaning is impractical
  • Vehicle bodies, trailers and transport equipment under repair
  • Plant machinery frames, agricultural and lawn equipment

Key advantages

  • Converts rust chemically — no sandblasting or grinding back to bright metal required
  • Rust converter and primer in a single product, removing one full coat cycle from the job
  • Water-based and low-odour, so it can be used in occupied buildings and enclosed plant areas
  • Single component and ready to use straight from the container — no mixing ratios to get wrong
  • Economical theoretical coverage of 10-12 m²/L per coat, depending on surface condition
  • Bluish-black colour change gives on-site visual confirmation that conversion has taken place
  • Saves labour and downtime because it is applied directly over firm, adherent rust
  • 12-month shelf life with simple cool, dry storage

Limitations & considerations

  • It does not dissolve mill scale, heavy rust flakes or old coatings — loose material must still be removed by wire brush or dry air before application
  • The substrate must be firm and bone-dry, and application is restricted to temperatures above 10°C, which constrains monsoon and cold-weather working
  • It is not a finish coat: surfaces exposed to the atmosphere need a UV-resistant protective topcoat once the film has cured for 48 hours
  • Supplied only in 1 L containers, so it suits maintenance and repair quantities better than large new-build programmes
  • The TDS does not publish DFT or corrosivity-category (e.g. ISO 12944) test data, so specification-driven projects may require a fully documented primer system instead
  • Used or contaminated material must not be poured back into the original bottle, so quantities should be decanted job by job

Selection & best practice

Preparation decides the result. Remove dust, flakes and foreign particles with an air jet or dry air, then wire-brush the surface until only firm, adherent rust remains — the converter needs intimate contact with the oxide, not with loose debris sitting over it. Confirm the steel is bone-dry; being water-based, the product will not perform on damp substrates or below 10°C. Brush the liquid on evenly, working it into pitted areas, and apply the second coat as soon as the first is touch-dry. Watch for the uniform bluish-black colour change as your acceptance check — patchy areas indicate missed or under-wetted spots that need recoating. Where the steel stays exposed to the atmosphere, apply a UV-resistant protective topcoat after 48 hours so the converted layer is fully cured underneath. Never return used or brush-contaminated primer to the original container, and wear goggles, mask and gloves throughout.

Industry use cases

Industrial Plants

Maintenance teams treat rusted pipe supports, equipment frames and platform steel during running operations, since the water-based, low-odour formulation avoids the shutdowns that blasting would force.

Tank Farms & Depots

External shells of storage tanks with surface rust are converted and primed in one pass, then overcoated with a UV-resistant protective finish for long-term exposure.

Facilities & Housing Societies

Gates, grills, railings and staircase steel across residential and commercial estates are refurbished economically — wire brush, two brushed coats, then enamel or PU finish.

Infrastructure Maintenance

Older steel structures, footbridges and railing runs where access or environmental limits rule out abrasive blasting get corrosion arrest with minimal preparation.

Transport & Logistics

Workshops treat rusted trailer chassis, truck bodies and sheet-metal panels before repainting, saving the labour of grinding every panel back to bare metal.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to sandblast the steel before applying ShaliPrime RC?
No — that is the point of the product. You do, however, need to remove loose rust flakes, dust and any failing paint with a wire brush or dry air jet. The converter works on firm, adherent rust, not on loose debris.
How do I know the product has actually worked?
The reaction is visible: treated rust turns a stable bluish-black. A uniform colour change across the surface is your site-level confirmation; patchy brown areas need a further application.
Can I leave it as the final coat?
Only where the steel is not exposed to the atmosphere. For exterior or exposed surfaces, STP requires a UV-resistant protective topcoat applied after 48 hours, once the film has fully cured.
How much will I need for my job?
Theoretical coverage is 10-12 m²/L per coat depending on surface condition, and two coats are recommended — so budget roughly 1 L per 5-6 m² of finished work, more on heavily pitted steel.
Can it be applied on damp steel, say just after rain?
No. The surface must be firm and bone-dry, and ambient temperature must be above 10°C. Applying over moisture prevents the conversion reaction and compromises adhesion.
Which topcoats are compatible?
Most conventional protective coatings — enamels, epoxies and polyurethanes — can be applied once the film has cured for 48 hours. For a specific coating system, confirm compatibility with our technical team before ordering.

How we position STP ShaliPrime RC

ShaliPrime RC is the pragmatic choice when rusted steel must be stabilised in place. Within the STP family it pairs naturally with the ShaliPrime primer range for cleanly prepared steel — including ShaliPrime Zn Sl, a moisture-cured zinc silicate primer for demanding anti-corrosive duty — and with STP’s protective and anti-corrosive topcoats that complete the system over the converted surface. Where the corroded steel is reinforcement exposed during concrete repair rather than free-standing steelwork, the Fosroc route — Nitozinc Primer within a Renderoc repair system — is usually the better-specified path. Space Arc Engineering stocks both brand families and can advise which system fits your substrate, exposure and specification.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Nitozinc Primer — Where corroded steel can be cleaned back to bright metal — especially rebar exposed in concrete repairs — specifiers often prefer the active galvanic protection of this zinc-rich primer over rust conversion.
