What is it?

A cold-applied, two-pack protective coating that marries polyurethane’s toughness and flexibility with the proven waterproofing and chemical resistance of coal tar pitch.

Where is it used?

Buried and water-immersed steel and concrete: pipelines, tank exteriors, foundations, effluent structures and marine or coastal assets.

Why use it?

It forms a continuous, flexible film that resists water, effluent and mild chemical attack, and it accommodates structural movement without cracking at the coating line.

How is it applied?

The base and hardener are blended on site in the correct ratio and brush, roller or spray applied to a clean, prepared surface, usually in two coats to build film thickness.

About STP ShaliKote PU CT

STP ShaliKote PU CT belongs to STP Limited’s family of coal-tar-modified protective coatings, a line the company (formerly Shalimar Tar Products) has built its reputation on over decades of supplying India’s water, power and infrastructure sectors. It is a two-component system: a coal-tar-pitch-loaded base is combined with a polyurethane hardener that triggers a cold chemical cure, so no heat or hot-work is needed on site. Once cured it leaves a dense, dark, seamless film keyed firmly to the substrate. The intent behind the product is straightforward. Coal tar pitch is one of the most effective, lowest-cost barriers against water and many aggressive effluents, but on its own it can be brittle and slow to handle. Bringing polyurethane chemistry into the film adds elongation, adhesion and toughness, so the coating behaves less like a rigid crust and more like a resilient skin.

That combination makes it a practical choice wherever steel or concrete spends its life against water or wet soil and where the asset is expected to flex, settle or vibrate over time. Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliKote PU CT as an authorised STP distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, and we position it alongside the wider STP coal-tar and polyurethane range so specifiers can match the right primer, build coat and top system to the exposure. Because coverage, film build and recoat behaviour depend heavily on substrate profile, temperature and the specific grade supplied, we always confirm the current STP technical data sheet for a given batch before finalising quantities on a project.

The technical insight

Corrosion and water ingress are ultimately transport problems: they happen when moisture, oxygen and dissolved salts can reach the steel or migrate through the concrete pore network. A coal-tar-pitch film is an excellent barrier because pitch is hydrophobic and has very low water permeability, so it slows that transport dramatically. The limitation of pitch alone is mechanical: it is comparatively rigid, and a rigid barrier over a structure that expands, contracts or deflects will eventually micro-crack, opening a path for water. This is where the polyurethane component does its work. As the two packs react, the isocyanate and polyol chemistry builds a cross-linked network that carries the coal tar within a flexible, high-adhesion matrix. The result is a film that keeps the barrier properties of the tar but gains elongation and bond strength, so it can stretch across small movements and settlement without delaminating or splitting. Being a cold-cure 2K system, the crosslinking is driven by the mixed chemistry rather than by air-drying alone, which gives a more consistent, chemically resistant film than a single-pack bituminous paint. That is the core reason the product suits buried and immersed duty, where a coating failure is expensive to find and repair.

Where it is used

  • External protective coating for buried steel pipelines and flow lines
  • Anti-corrosion coating for immersed or buried steel structures and tank exteriors
  • Waterproof, flexible protective film on below-ground concrete foundations and retaining structures
  • Lining and protection of effluent, drainage and sewage-contact concrete
  • Coating of steel and concrete assets in marine, coastal and splash-zone environments
  • Protection of penetrations, sleeves and fittings that experience movement or vibration
  • Overcoat for compatible coal-tar or saturated-tar primers within an STP anti-corrosion system
  • Refurbishment of ageing bituminous or coal-tar coatings where flexibility is needed

Key advantages

  • Combines coal-tar’s low water permeability with polyurethane toughness in one film
  • Flexible enough to bridge minor movement, settlement and vibration without cracking
  • Strong adhesion to prepared steel and concrete for a durable, keyed bond
  • Cold-cure 2K chemistry needs no heat or hot-work on site
  • Continuous, seamless barrier with no joints or laps to fail
  • Good resistance to water, effluent and many mild chemical exposures
  • Suited to demanding buried and immersed service where access for repair is limited
  • Backed by STP’s established coal-tar coatings pedigree and pan-India supply through Space Arc

Limitations & considerations

  • Contains coal tar pitch, so the same handling, ventilation and PPE precautions as coal-tar products apply — always follow the MSDS
  • As a two-component system it has a limited pot life once mixed and must be applied within the working window
  • Performance depends on correct surface preparation; poorly cleaned or profiled steel and concrete will undermine adhesion
  • Not intended as a UV-durable, colour-stable finish coat — coal-tar coatings are dark and can chalk or soften under prolonged direct sunlight
  • Cure and film properties are sensitive to temperature and substrate moisture at the time of application
  • Coverage, DFT and recoat times must be taken from the current STP data sheet for the supplied grade rather than assumed

Selection & best practice

Preparation decides the outcome. On steel, abrasive blast or mechanically clean to remove rust, mill scale and contamination and establish a sound anchor profile; on concrete, ensure the surface is cured, sound, free of laitance and dry enough for a coal-tar polyurethane to bond. Prime with a compatible STP primer where the system calls for it. Mix the base and hardener strictly in the ratio and manner given on the STP data sheet, using slow-speed mechanical mixing, and only prepare as much as can be used within the stated pot life. Apply by brush, roller or airless spray in the recommended number of coats to reach the specified dry film thickness, respecting the minimum and maximum overcoat intervals so intercoat adhesion is not lost. Maintain adequate ventilation, and keep the freshly coated surface protected from water and mechanical damage until it has cured. For buried lines, inspect the film for holidays before backfilling. When in doubt on coverage or compatibility, confirm with Space Arc’s technical team against the live STP TDS.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is STP ShaliKote PU CT?
It is a two-component coal-tar polyurethane protective coating from STP Limited. A coal-tar-pitch base is mixed with a polyurethane hardener to give a cold-cured, flexible, waterproof film for steel and concrete in buried and immersed service.
Where is it typically used?
On assets that live against water or wet soil — buried pipelines, immersed steel, tank exteriors, below-ground concrete foundations, and effluent or marine structures where both corrosion protection and flexibility matter.
Why coal tar plus polyurethane rather than a plain bituminous paint?
Coal tar gives excellent low water permeability, and the polyurethane adds elongation, adhesion and toughness. Together they form a flexible barrier that resists cracking over structural movement, which a single-pack bituminous paint cannot match.
What surface preparation does it need?
Steel should be cleaned or blasted to remove rust and mill scale and to give an anchor profile; concrete must be sound, cured and free of laitance. Prime where the STP system specifies. Preparation is the biggest factor in long-term adhesion.
Is it safe to handle?
It contains coal tar pitch, so it needs the same precautions as other coal-tar coatings — good ventilation, gloves, eye protection and skin cover. Always read and follow the current STP MSDS before use.
What coverage and film thickness should I plan for?
These depend on the substrate profile, the number of coats and the exact grade supplied, so we confirm them from the live STP technical data sheet for your batch rather than quoting a fixed figure. Contact Space Arc and we will size quantities for your project.

How we position STP ShaliKote PU CT

Within the STP range, ShaliKote PU CT sits at the flexible end of the coal-tar family. Where a project needs a saturated-tar primer or a solvent-free processed tar to prepare the substrate, the ShaliDCT / ShaliKote CT grades are the natural partners; where a harder, chemically tougher coal-tar epoxy is preferred over a flexible film, STP’s ShaliPoxy CTE and the ShaliMastic HD/LC coal-tar coatings are the alternatives. For colour-stable, UV-durable top coats that a coal-tar film cannot provide, the STP ShaliUrethane and ShaliProtek polyurethane range takes over as a finish. Across our other brands, buyers comparing this class often look at Fosroc’s Nitocote coal-tar and epoxy coatings and Dr. Fixit’s protective systems; Space Arc can specify across all of them so the coating matches the true exposure rather than the nearest catalogue entry.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Nitocote ET402 — A specifier who wants a harder, coal-tar-extended 100% solids epoxy for immersed concrete and severe chemical or effluent exposure — rather than a flexible coal-tar polyurethane — may prefer the Fosroc option.
