Fosroc Dekguard E-Coat Sealer
Water-based acrylic sealer and undercoat that primes concrete, render and cementitious surfaces ahead of the Dekguard E-Coat anti-carbonation topcoat system.
What is it?
A single-pack, water-based acrylic sealer and undercoat that forms the priming layer of the Fosroc Dekguard E-Coat protective coating system for reinforced concrete and masonry.
Where is it used?
On new and old concrete, cementitious renders, plaster/paper-faced wallboard, hardboard and similar substrates that will receive a Dekguard E-Coat anti-carbonation finish, including confined interior areas.
Why use it?
It seals porous and dusty surfaces, binds in residual fines, and gives the water-based topcoat a uniform, low-suction base so the finished system delivers its full barrier against carbon dioxide and chloride ions.
How is it applied?
Applied by brush, roller or spray as a single undercoat over a clean, dry, sound substrate, allowed to dry, then overcoated with Dekguard E-Coat to build the specified dry film thickness.
About Fosroc Dekguard E-Coat Sealer
Fosroc Dekguard E-Coat Sealer is the priming and undercoating component of the Dekguard E-Coat protective coating system, one of Fosroc’s anti-carbonation coating ranges for reinforced concrete and masonry. According to Fosroc’s official product information, it is a water-based acrylic sealer and undercoat designed to be used as a protective primer beneath the Dekguard E-Coat topcoat, working together to protect concrete against the twin durability threats of carbonation and chloride-ion attack. It is single-part, low odour and ready for immediate site use, which makes it practical for confined interiors as well as exposed external elevations.
In the Indian context, carbonation-induced corrosion of reinforcement is one of the most common causes of premature distress in RCC structures. Atmospheric carbon dioxide diffuses into the cover concrete, lowers its pH, destroys the passive film around the steel, and the bars begin to corrode and spall the cover. A correctly specified anti-carbonation coating slows that CO2 diffusion dramatically while still letting water vapour escape. Dekguard E-Coat Sealer is the foundation layer of that protective sandwich: it is not the barrier coat on its own, but without a properly sealed and consolidated substrate the topcoat cannot adhere uniformly or perform to specification.
The sealer suits both new construction (where fresh render or fair-faced concrete needs to be primed before decorative-protective coating) and repair-and-protect work on ageing structures, typically after concrete repair mortars such as the Renderoc range have been used to make good spalled areas. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies the complete Dekguard E-Coat system across Delhi NCR and pan-India, so the sealer is normally specified as part of a full primer-plus-topcoat package rather than as a stand-alone product.
The technical insight
The chemistry to understand here is the difference between a sealer/undercoat and the anti-carbonation barrier itself. Dekguard E-Coat Sealer is a water-based acrylic dispersion. Its job is penetration and consolidation, not CO2 resistance: it wets out the surface, glues down loose fines and laitance, equalises the suction of patchy or repaired concrete, and presents a continuous, low-porosity film for the topcoat to key into. The carbon-dioxide diffusion resistance, water-vapour permeability and chloride protection are delivered by the Dekguard E-Coat pigmented topcoat applied over it, and are properties of the complete system. As a family reference, Fosroc’s elastomeric Dekguard E2000 system (the same acrylic family) is rated at an equivalent air-layer thickness for CO2 diffusion of greater than 50 metres to DIN EN 1062 Part 6, while remaining breathable at around SD 1.0 m for water vapour at 200 microns DFT — illustrating the order of protection an acrylic Dekguard system targets. The practical engineering lesson is that performance is governed by total dry film thickness and continuity of the finished system, so the sealer must be applied at the right rate and fully cured before overcoating, and the topcoat must reach its specified DFT in two cross-applied coats with no holidays, raw edges or gaps at corners. Treat the sealer as the part of the system that makes the rest of the system work, not as a cost line to be value-engineered out.
Where it is used
- Priming new fair-faced or formed concrete before a Dekguard E-Coat anti-carbonation finish
- Undercoating cementitious renders and plaster prior to protective-decorative coating
- Sealing and binding dusty, porous or lightly friable concrete and masonry substrates
- Preparing concrete repaired with Renderoc-type mortars so suction is uniform before topcoating
- Sealing interior paper-faced wallboard, plasterboard and hardboard ahead of water-based topcoats
- Undercoating in confined interior areas where low odour and water-based products are required
- Bridge, flyover, water-tank and building facade protection schemes as the primer layer of the E-Coat system
Key advantages
- Water-based and low odour, suitable for confined and occupied interior areas
- Single-part and ready to use straight from the pack — no on-site mixing of components
- Good wet-edge time and excellent spreading, making it quick and easy to apply
- Quick drying, allowing faster overcoating and shorter programme times
- Seals and consolidates porous, dusty substrates to give the topcoat a uniform low-suction base
- Compatible by design with the Dekguard E-Coat water-based topcoat as a matched system
- Versatile across concrete, render, cementitious surfaces, plasterboard and hardboard
- Backed in India by Space Arc Engineering for authorised supply plus applicator support
Limitations & considerations
- A primer/undercoat only — it does not provide anti-carbonation or chloride protection on its own and must be overcoated with Dekguard E-Coat
- Performance of the finished scheme depends on the complete system reaching its specified total dry film thickness
- Requires a clean, dry, structurally sound substrate; oil, grease, laitance, loose matter, moss and algae must be removed first
- Repaired blowholes and surface defects should be made good and cured before the sealer is applied
- Not a substitute for crack-bridging elastomeric coatings (e.g. Dekguard E2000) where active substrate cracking is expected
- Being water-based, application is sensitive to low temperature, high humidity, dew point and imminent rain
- Should not be applied to permanently wet or submerged surfaces
- Country-specific TDS values for exact coverage and DFT must be confirmed against the current Fosroc datasheet before specifying
Selection & best practice
Specify Dekguard E-Coat Sealer only as the primer layer of the full Dekguard E-Coat system, never in isolation. Prepare the substrate properly: it must be clean, dry and sound, with all oil, grease, curing-compound residue, laitance, loose particles, moss and algae removed, and all blowholes and spalls repaired with an appropriate Renderoc mortar and allowed to cure. Apply the sealer as a continuous, uniform undercoat, working it well into the surface to consolidate fines, and let it dry fully before overcoating — never topcoat over a sealer coat that is still wet or tacky. Then apply Dekguard E-Coat in two coats, the second at 90 degrees to the first, to build the specified total DFT with no gaps, holidays or raw edges, paying special attention to corners and protrusions. Avoid application in high humidity, when rain is likely within a couple of hours, or when substrate temperature is near dew point. Keep a coating log of rates and DFT for QA. Always confirm coverage, DFT and overcoating windows against the current country-specific Fosroc TDS, and ask Space Arc for an applicator method statement on larger projects.

How we position Fosroc Dekguard E-Coat Sealer
Within the Fosroc Dekguard range, Dekguard E-Coat Sealer is best understood as the water-based primer layer that pairs with the Dekguard E-Coat topcoat — it sits alongside, not in competition with, the broader anti-carbonation family. Where active substrate cracking and movement must be accommodated, Fosroc’s elastomeric Dekguard E2000 system (with its silane-siloxane Dekguard Primer or water-based Dekguard WB Primer) is the more appropriate choice; for a solvent-based acrylic finish, Dekguard S or Dekguard Standard apply; and for impregnation rather than film-forming protection, Dekguard CP is relevant. The natural companion repair products are the Renderoc concrete repair mortars and Nitobond bonding agents. Against competitor systems, credible alternatives an Indian specifier may evaluate include Sika’s Sikagard anti-carbonation coatings (e.g. Sikagard-550 W Elastic), MC-Bauchemie’s MC-Color/Emcephob coatings, Dr. Fixit’s protective and anti-carbonation coatings from Pidilite, and STP’s protective coating range. The honest positioning is that no acrylic sealer is a substitute for a correctly built, full-DFT topcoat system: specify Dekguard E-Coat Sealer for what it does well — sealing and priming the substrate — and let the matched Dekguard E-Coat topcoat carry the carbonation and chloride protection. Space Arc Engineering’s value is supplying the genuine, matched Fosroc system and applying it to specification rather than mixing primers and topcoats across brands.
