Fosroc Dekguard WF10
A flexible, water-based acrylic protective and decorative coating that shields concrete against carbonation, chlorides and weathering while bridging fine surface cracks.
What is it?
A high-performance, water-based acrylic-dispersion protective and decorative coating from Fosroc that resists carbon dioxide, chloride ions, sulphates, oxygen and water while remaining flexible enough to accommodate fine cracks in the substrate.
Where is it used?
Applied to new and existing reinforced concrete and cement-mortar surfaces exposed to weather and aggressive atmospheres – building facades, columns, soffits, parapets, water-retaining and infrastructure structures.
Why use it?
It forms a breathable barrier against the main agents of reinforcement corrosion (CO2 and chlorides), so it both protects new concrete and extends the life of carbonation- or chloride-affected structures, with a decorative colour finish.
How is it applied?
Surface is prepared and primed as required, then WF10 is applied in coats by brush, roller or suitable spray equipment to the recommended film build (approx. 6 m2 per kg per coat) and allowed to cure.
About Fosroc Dekguard WF10
Fosroc Dekguard WF10 is a high-performance protective and decorative coating built on a flexible acrylic dispersion. It belongs to Fosroc’s well-established Dekguard family of anti-carbonation coatings, sitting alongside products such as Dekguard S, Dekguard A Plus (formerly Dekguard W), Dekguard Elastic and Dekguard PU. What distinguishes WF10 within that range is its combination of a water-based acrylic binder with genuine crack-accommodating flexibility, which lets it stretch over and bridge the fine hairline cracks that commonly open up across concrete surfaces over time without the film itself rupturing.
The coating is designed to address the single biggest durability problem in reinforced concrete: corrosion of the embedded steel. In normal service, concrete protects steel through its high alkalinity. Two processes erode that protection. First, atmospheric carbon dioxide slowly diffuses into the concrete and reacts with the alkaline pore solution, dropping the pH and de-passivating the steel – this is carbonation. Second, chloride ions from marine air, de-icing salts or contaminated aggregates penetrate to the reinforcement and trigger pitting corrosion. Dekguard WF10 works by laying down a continuous, low-permeability acrylic film on the concrete face that acts as a barrier to carbon dioxide, chloride ions, sulphates, oxygen and liquid water, dramatically slowing the ingress of all of these aggressive agents.
Critically, the film is breathable. Water vapour generated within the structure can escape outward, so moisture is not trapped behind the coating where it could cause blistering or freeze-thaw damage. The coating is also frost-resistant, UV-stable with high resistance to ageing, and available in a wide range of colours, allowing it to double as the architectural finish coat. For Indian conditions – high UV load, monsoon-driven wetting and drying, coastal chloride exposure and heavily polluted urban atmospheres – this blend of anti-carbonation protection, chloride resistance, crack-bridging flexibility and a water-based, low-odour, easy-to-apply formulation makes WF10 a practical specification for both new-build protection and the refurbishment of distressed concrete.
The technical insight
The protective value of an anti-carbonation coating like Dekguard WF10 lies in its resistance to carbon-dioxide diffusion. A high-quality acrylic film of this type behaves as a large equivalent thickness of still air to CO2 (the diffusion-equivalent air-layer thickness, commonly written as the carbon dioxide R-value, Sd-CO2), which is precisely what slows the carbonation front in the concrete beneath. At the same time, the film must offer relatively low resistance to water vapour so the substrate can dry outward – the classic specification target being high CO2 resistance combined with low water-vapour resistance, the property set that EN 1062 and EN 1504-2 use to define anti-carbonation surface protection. WF10 is engineered for exactly this asymmetry: it is a strong barrier to CO2, chlorides, sulphates, oxygen and liquid water, yet remains vapour-permeable (breathable). Its flexible acrylic dispersion also gives it crack-accommodation, so the protective barrier stays continuous across moving hairline cracks rather than fracturing at them – the failure mode that defeats rigid, brittle paints. Specifiers should obtain the country-specific Fosroc Technical Data Sheet to confirm the exact certified diffusion values, dry-film thickness and standard classifications before writing them into a specification.
Where it is used
- Anti-carbonation protection of new reinforced-concrete facades, columns, beams and soffits
- Refurbishment and re-protection of carbonation-affected or chloride-contaminated concrete after patch repair
- Decorative protective finishing of concrete and cement-render building exteriors
- Crack-bridging over surfaces prone to fine hairline cracking
- Protection of structures in polluted urban and industrial atmospheres against acid gases
- Coastal and marine-zone concrete requiring a chloride-ion barrier
- Bridges, flyovers, retaining walls and other civil-infrastructure concrete
- Parapets, fins, chajjas and exposed architectural concrete elements
Key advantages
- Resists carbonation by forming a barrier to carbon dioxide diffusion into concrete
- Excellent barrier to chloride ions, sulphates, oxygen and water that drive steel corrosion
- Flexible acrylic dispersion accommodates and bridges fine surface cracks
- Breathable film lets water vapour escape, preventing trapped-moisture blistering
- Water-based formulation – low odour, easy clean-up and site-friendly application
- UV-resistant with high resistance to ageing and colour retention
- Frost-resistant and durable against atmospheric pollution
- Decorative – supplied in a wide range of colours, acting as protection and finish in one
- Applies by brush, roller or spray over prepared concrete and mortar
- Suitable for both new construction and the rehabilitation of existing structures
Limitations & considerations
- A coating, not a structural or anti-corrosion repair – delaminated or spalled concrete must be repaired (e.g. with a Renderoc system) first
- Bridges only fine surface cracks; will not span wide, live or structural cracks or movement joints
- Performance depends on correct surface preparation, priming and achieving the specified film build
- Water-based acrylic – application needs suitable temperature and dry conditions and must avoid rain and frost during cure
- Not intended as a trafficable floor or deck coating or as a tanking/waterproofing membrane for immersed conditions
- Country-specific certified diffusion values, DFT and pack sizes must be confirmed from the local Fosroc TDS before specification
- UV/colour performance and recoat life are finite; periodic inspection and maintenance recoating are expected over the structure’s life
Selection & best practice
Treat WF10 as the protective finish at the end of a concrete-repair sequence, not a cosmetic paint. First make good the substrate: cut out and repair spalled or carbonated concrete with an appropriate Fosroc Renderoc mortar and allow it to cure, then remove laitance, dust, oil and loose material so the surface is sound, clean and dry. Prime where the substrate or TDS calls for it (the Dekguard system uses a dedicated primer on suction or repaired surfaces). Apply WF10 in the recommended number of coats – typically two – by brush, roller or spray, respecting the stated application rate (the product gives about 6 m2 per kg per coat) and the overcoat interval so the full dry-film thickness and continuity are achieved; thin, patchy coats compromise the CO2 barrier. Do not apply onto wet substrates, in rain, or when frost is expected during cure. Always work to the current country-specific Fosroc Technical Data Sheet and Method Statement for exact coverage, DFT, primer and curing data, and have application carried out by a trained applicator – Space Arc Engineering provides both supply and application across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

How we position Fosroc Dekguard WF10
Within Fosroc’s Dekguard line, WF10 occupies the flexible, water-based acrylic anti-carbonation niche. It is closely related to Dekguard S (a high-performance aliphatic-acrylic anti-carbonation coating), Dekguard A Plus (formerly Dekguard W) and Dekguard Elastic, which offers even greater crack-bridging elastomeric capacity, while Dekguard PU and Dekguard CP serve polyurethane and impregnation roles respectively. In a typical specification, WF10 is paired with Fosroc Dekguard Primer and a Renderoc concrete-repair mortar to deliver a complete repair-and-protect system. Compared with competing anti-carbonation and protective coatings in India – such as Sika’s Sikagard range (e.g. Sikagard-550W Elastic), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions’ MasterProtect line, Dr. Fixit’s protective coatings, and STP’s offerings – WF10 competes on Fosroc’s anti-carbonation track record, breathable acrylic chemistry, crack-accommodation and colour range. Product selection should be driven by the project’s exposure class, required CO2 and crack-bridging performance, and the certified values in the current local TDS rather than brand alone; Space Arc Engineering can advise on the right Dekguard grade or equivalent for a given exposure and budget.
