What is it?

Fosroc Nitocote EB83 is a bitumen-based liquid-applied coating that forms a black, flexible, water-resistant film. It is used as a protective and damp-proofing barrier on concrete and steel surfaces that are buried or exposed to moisture and mildly aggressive ground conditions.

Where is it used?

Foundations, retaining walls, basement and tank exteriors, plinth beams, pile caps, buried pipework and the back faces of below-ground structural concrete, plus general damp-proofing on plaster and masonry.

Why use it?

It blocks water ingress and isolates the substrate from sulphates, chlorides and other ground-borne salts, slowing reinforcement corrosion. It is cold-applied, single-component and economical over large areas, making it a fast, low-skill barrier for buried surfaces.

How is it applied?

Surfaces are cleaned and primed where needed, then EB83 is applied cold by brush, roller or spray in two coats, allowing each coat to dry before the next. Typical consumption is in the order of 2.0 kg/m2 over the full system; always confirm against the current local TDS.

About Fosroc Nitocote EB83

Fosroc Nitocote EB83 belongs to the Nitocote family of protective coatings and sits at the economical, bitumen-based end of that range. It is a cold-applied, liquid coating that dries to a black, flexible, water-resistant film. Its job is simple but important: keep moisture and ground-borne aggressive agents away from concrete and embedded steel so that the structure lasts longer and the reinforcement stays passive.

In Indian conditions, below-ground concrete rarely faces clean water. Foundation soils carry sulphates, chlorides and dissolved salts; water tables fluctuate seasonally; and monsoon saturation drives moisture and dissolved ions toward the steel. Once chlorides reach the rebar or sulphates attack the cement matrix, you get expansive corrosion, cracking and spalling that is expensive to repair after backfilling. A bitumen barrier coat such as EB83 is one of the oldest and most cost-effective lines of defence against this, which is why it remains a workhorse spec for foundations, retaining walls and tank exteriors.

Because EB83 is bitumen-based and single-component, it is genuinely contractor-friendly. There is no mixing ratio to get wrong, no pot life to race against, and it goes on cold with ordinary brushes, rollers or spray equipment. That makes it well suited to large buried areas where speed and coverage matter more than a decorative finish. It is, however, a black protective and damp-proofing coat, not an architectural or UV-stable topcoat, and not a structural waterproofing membrane in its own right for severe hydrostatic heads. For aggressive chemical immersion or high water pressure, Fosroc’s epoxy and polyurethane Nitocote grades, or a dedicated Nitoproof membrane, are the correct step up.

For specifiers, the value of EB83 is that it is a known, branded product backed by a manufacturer’s technical data sheet and a distributor network, rather than an unbranded “black bitumen paint” of uncertain quality. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies EB83 with batch traceability and can advise on the correct primer, number of coats and compatible Fosroc waterproofing system for each below-ground situation. Exact coverage, drying times and pack sizes should always be confirmed against the current Fosroc India technical data sheet for your project, as values can vary by region and formulation revision.

The technical insight

The protection mechanism of Nitocote EB83 is barrier isolation rather than chemical inhibition. The bitumen film is hydrophobic and forms a continuous, low-permeability skin that dramatically slows the diffusion of liquid water and dissolved ions (sulphates, chlorides) into the concrete cover and toward embedded steel. By keeping the substrate dry and isolating it from the surrounding soil chemistry, it suppresses the electrochemical conditions that drive reinforcement corrosion and sulphate attack on the cement matrix. Film continuity is therefore everything: a coating that bridges pinholes and minor surface imperfections protects far better than one applied too thin or in a single pass. This is why EB83 is specified as a multi-coat (typically two-coat) system, with each coat fully dry before the next, building dry-film thickness and sealing any defects left by the previous pass. Performance depends heavily on surface preparation and consumption rate: the substrate must be sound, clean and free of loose material and standing water, and the consumption (around 2.0 kg/m2 over the system) must be met so the dry film reaches the thickness the manufacturer designed around. Being a bitumen, the cured film stays flexible enough to tolerate minor substrate movement but softens at elevated temperature and is not UV-stable, so it is intended for buried, backfilled or otherwise protected and shaded surfaces rather than permanently exposed faces.

Where it is used

  • Damp-proofing and protective coating to the external faces of foundations, footings and pile caps before backfilling
  • Back-face (positive-side) protection of basement and retaining walls against ground moisture and salts
  • External coating of below-ground water tanks, sumps and underground structures (non-potable, where compatible)
  • Protective coating to plinth beams, grade beams and concrete in contact with aggressive soils
  • Damp-proof barrier coating on plaster, masonry and concrete at and below DPC level
  • Protection of buried concrete pipework, ducts and culvert surfaces against moisture ingress
  • Anti-corrosive barrier coat over embedded or buried steel and metal surfaces in non-immersed service

Key advantages

  • Cold-applied and single-component: no mixing, no pot-life constraints, minimal applicator skill required
  • Hydrophobic bitumen film provides an effective barrier to water and ground-borne sulphates and chlorides
  • Flexible cured film tolerates minor substrate movement and thermal cycling without cracking
  • Economical per square metre, making it well suited to large buried areas such as foundations and retaining walls
  • Applies easily by brush, roller or spray, allowing fast coverage on site
  • Bonds to correctly prepared concrete, masonry and plaster substrates
  • Branded, manufacturer-backed product with a published TDS and distributor support, unlike generic bitumen paints

Limitations & considerations

  • Not UV-stable: intended for buried, backfilled or shaded surfaces, not permanently exposed faces
  • Bitumen softens at elevated temperatures and is not suited to hot immersion or high-temperature service
  • Black, non-decorative finish; cannot be used as an architectural or coloured topcoat
  • Not a substitute for a dedicated structural waterproofing membrane under high hydrostatic head
  • Limited resistance to strong solvents, oils and aggressive chemical immersion compared with epoxy or PU coatings
  • Performance depends on full surface preparation, correct priming and meeting the specified consumption rate
  • Requires each coat to dry fully before recoating; drying is slowed by cold, damp or poorly ventilated conditions

Selection & best practice

Inspect and prepare the substrate first: it must be sound, clean, and free of laitance, oil, loose particles and standing water. Make good major honeycombing or cracks with an appropriate Fosroc repair mortar before coating. On porous or dusty surfaces, apply the primer recommended in the current EB83 TDS and allow it to dry. Stir EB83 thoroughly and apply cold by brush, roller or spray in a minimum of two coats, working the first coat well into the surface to seal pinholes; allow each coat to dry fully (touch-dry then through-dry) before applying the next, and lay successive coats at right angles to ensure full, continuous cover. Aim to meet the manufacturer’s consumption figure (in the order of 2.0 kg/m2 over the system) rather than judging by appearance alone, and pay extra attention to corners, construction joints and re-entrant angles. Protect the finished coating from mechanical damage, and where backfilling, use a protection board or screen and place fill carefully so sharp aggregate does not puncture the film. Do not apply over damp surfaces, during rain, or below the minimum temperature stated on the TDS. Always work to the current Fosroc India technical data sheet and method statement for the specific project, and confirm potable-water and chemical-compatibility requirements before use.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Fosroc Nitocote EB83?
It is a bitumen-based protective and waterproof coating from Fosroc’s Nitocote range. Applied cold as a liquid, it dries to a black, flexible film that damp-proofs concrete and steel and shields them from ground moisture and aggressive salts. It is mainly used on below-ground or otherwise protected surfaces.
Is Nitocote EB83 a waterproofing membrane?
It is a barrier and damp-proofing coating rather than a heavy-duty structural waterproofing membrane. It is excellent for keeping moisture and ground salts away from buried concrete, but where there is significant hydrostatic head or demanding tanking duty, pair or replace it with a dedicated Fosroc Nitoproof membrane system on advice from our technical team.
How is it applied and how many coats are needed?
It is applied cold by brush, roller or spray, normally in a minimum of two coats, with each coat allowed to dry fully before the next. The surface must be sound, clean, dry and primed where required. Always follow the current Fosroc India technical data sheet for priming, coats and timing.
What is the coverage of Nitocote EB83?
Typical consumption is in the order of 2.0 kg/m2 for the full multi-coat system, but the exact figure depends on substrate porosity, texture and the number of coats. Confirm the precise coverage against the current TDS and allow extra material for rough or porous surfaces.
Can it be used on surfaces exposed to sunlight?
No. EB83 is bitumen-based, so it is not UV-stable and will degrade if left permanently exposed to sunlight. It is designed for buried, backfilled or shaded surfaces. For UV-exposed protection, use an appropriate Fosroc Dekguard or epoxy/PU Nitocote coating instead.
Does Space Arc Engineering supply EB83 in Delhi NCR and across India?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India. We supply genuine, batch-traceable Nitocote EB83 and can advise on the right primer, system build-up and compatible Fosroc products for your project, along with application support.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote EB83

Within Fosroc’s protective-coatings line-up, Nitocote EB83 is the economical bitumen barrier for buried, damp-proofing duty. It sits below the epoxy and polyurethane Nitocote grades (for example Nitocote EP405 and the Nitocote ET/EM series), which are specified when you need chemical immersion resistance, UV stability or a coloured, durable finish; EB83 is the right choice when the surface is buried and you simply need a cost-effective, hydrophobic isolation coat. For genuine structural waterproofing under hydrostatic pressure, the Fosroc Nitoproof membrane range (such as Nitoproof 10, 120 or 600) is the correct partner or upgrade, and EB83 is often used alongside Fosroc Renderoc/Nitomortar repair mortars and Nitoprime primers as part of a complete below-ground system. Against the wider Indian market, EB83 competes with bitumen and protective-coating products from Sika (for example Sika bituminous and Igolflex coatings), MYK Arment/MBS, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite’s Bitumen Coat and Newcoat range) and STP Limited’s bituminous coatings. These are credible, widely available alternatives; the practical case for EB83 is that it is a branded, TDS-backed Fosroc product within a single compatible system, supplied with batch traceability and applicator support by Space Arc Engineering as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India. As with any below-ground coating, the deciding factors are correct product selection for the exposure, full surface preparation and meeting the specified consumption, all of which our technical team can confirm against the current Fosroc India data sheet for your project.
