Fosroc Nitocote EP140 (M)
Two-component, micaceous iron oxide (MIO) reinforced epoxy polyamide coating that delivers a tough, chemical- and UV-resistant barrier on steel and concrete.
What is it?
A two-pack epoxy polyamide protective coating pigmented with micaceous iron oxide (MIO), curing to a smooth, abrasion-resistant film of around 80 microns DFT per coat that resists a wide range of industrial chemicals and UV light.
Where is it used?
Steel storage tanks, concrete walls, bridge elements, metal and concrete columns, sluices, ducts and other exposed structural surfaces in industrial, infrastructure and water-retaining environments.
Why use it?
It bonds directly to both mild steel and concrete, shrugs off chemical splash and weathering, and the lamellar MIO pigment builds a tortuous, durable barrier film that out-performs ordinary single-substrate enamels in aggressive service.
How is it applied?
Applied by brush, roller or airless spray over a blast-cleaned or mechanically prepared, primed substrate after mixing the base and hardener in the supplied ratio; typically two coats to reach the specified total build.
About Fosroc Nitocote EP140 (M)
Fosroc Nitocote EP140 (M) is a high-performance protective coating built on an epoxy polyamide binder system and reinforced with micaceous iron oxide (MIO) pigment. The “(M)” designation distinguishes the MIO-pigmented grade from the standard Nitocote EP140, and that lamellar iron-oxide loading is the defining feature: the flat MIO platelets align within the film to create a barrier that is more resistant to moisture and chemical ingress than a conventionally pigmented coating of the same thickness. It is supplied as a two-component material — a pigmented base and a polyamide hardener — that are combined on site immediately before use.
The coating is engineered to work equally well on the two substrates that dominate Indian industrial and infrastructure construction: structural and mild steel, and concrete. Because it can be applied directly onto suitably prepared steel and concrete, it removes the need for separate, incompatible coating systems on a single structure. On curing it forms a smooth, hard, glossy film that is hygienic, easy to clean and resistant to a broad spread of mineral and organic acids, alkalis, fats and oils, as well as ultraviolet light — making it suitable for both internal and external exposure.
For contractors, consultants and procurement teams in India, Nitocote EP140 (M) sits in Fosroc’s protective-coatings family as a workhorse barrier coat for tanks, water-retaining and effluent structures, bridge steelwork, columns and ductwork. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, including specification support, surface-preparation guidance and trained application crews. The notes below are drawn from Fosroc’s published product information; always confirm the latest region-specific Technical Data Sheet for the exact project before finalising a specification.
The technical insight
The performance of Nitocote EP140 (M) comes from the pairing of an epoxy polyamide binder with micaceous iron oxide. Epoxy polyamide chemistry gives good wetting and adhesion to both steel and concrete, useful flexibility and excellent resistance to water and chemicals once cross-linked. The MIO pigment is the differentiator: its plate-like crystals stack and overlap within the dry film, lengthening the path that water, oxygen and aggressive ions must travel to reach the substrate. This “tortuous-path” effect, combined with the inherent UV-screening of iron oxide, is why MIO-pigmented epoxies are a long-standing choice for durable mid-coats and finish coats on structural steel. The trade-off is that, like all amine/polyamide-cured epoxies, the film chalks on prolonged direct sunlight even though its protective function is retained — so where colour and gloss retention are critical, a polyurethane topcoat such as Fosroc Nitocote EPU is often specified over it. Cure is a chemical reaction, so pot life and recoat windows shorten markedly as temperature rises (roughly 4 hours pot life at 20°C versus about 1.5 hours at 35°C), a critical scheduling factor on Indian sites during summer.
Where it is used
- Internal and external protective coating for fabricated and structural mild steel
- Barrier coating for steel storage tanks and process vessels exposed to chemical splash
- Protective coating for concrete walls, retaining structures and water-retaining elements
- Coating for concrete and metal columns, beams and exposed structural members
- Bridge steelwork and infrastructure elements requiring a durable, UV-resistant film
- Sluice gates, ducts, channels and effluent-handling structures
- Refurbishment over-coating of previously coated steel and concrete where compatibility is confirmed
Key advantages
- Equally effective on both concrete and metal, allowing a single coating system across mixed substrates
- MIO-reinforced epoxy film gives a tough, durable, abrasion-resistant barrier
- Good resistance to a wide range of industrial mineral and organic acids, alkalis, fats and oils
- Resists ultraviolet light, suiting it to external as well as internal exposure
- Excellent adhesion when applied over a correctly prepared and primed substrate
- Cures to a smooth, glossy, hygienic surface that is easy to clean and maintain
- Two-component system with practical brush, roller or airless-spray application
- Backed in India by Fosroc technical support and by Space Arc’s authorised supply and applicator service
Limitations & considerations
- Two-pack material with a limited pot life that falls sharply at high ambient temperatures, requiring careful batch sizing on hot days
- Like all polyamide-cured epoxies it will chalk and lose gloss under prolonged direct sunlight; a PU topcoat is advised where appearance must be retained
- Performance depends entirely on correct surface preparation — steel typically blast-cleaned and concrete clean, sound and dry — and on use of the correct primer
- Not a substitute for a dedicated tank-lining or immersion-grade system where continuous chemical immersion is involved; confirm suitability for the specific exposure
- Application and cure are sensitive to low temperature, dampness and high humidity; avoid coating below recommended conditions or onto damp substrates
- Solvent-containing epoxy — requires adequate ventilation, PPE and fire precautions during application and cure
- Recoat (overcoating) intervals must be respected to ensure intercoat adhesion
Selection & best practice
Specify the substrate preparation precisely: blast-clean structural steel to Sa 2½ (ISO 8501-1 / BS 7079) and prime promptly with the matching Fosroc epoxy primer (for example a Nitoprime grade) before flash rusting occurs; on concrete, ensure the surface is sound, clean, dry and free of laitance and curing-membrane residues, with an appropriate primer or sealer. Mix the full base and hardener together with a slow-speed drill and paddle until uniform — never split-mix part packs by eye. Size each mixed batch to what can be applied within the pot life for the day’s temperature, and protect freshly coated work from rain, dust and condensation. Apply in the recommended number of coats to reach the specified total dry film thickness, respecting the minimum and maximum overcoat windows. Where long-term colour and gloss are required outdoors, finish with a UV-stable polyurethane topcoat. Always work to the current region-specific Fosroc TDS for the project, and engage Space Arc for application supervision on critical structures.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote EP140 (M)
Within the Fosroc range, Nitocote EP140 (M) is positioned as a general-purpose, MIO-reinforced epoxy barrier coat for steel and concrete, sitting between primers such as the Nitoprime range (which Space Arc also supplies and which prepare the substrate for it) and UV-stable polyurethane finishes such as Nitocote EPU, which are often applied over it for colour and gloss retention. The non-MIO Nitocote EP140 and other Nitocote epoxies (for example the ET140/EPS family) cover variants where MIO reinforcement or different exposure is involved. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives a specifier may evaluate include Sika’s epoxy protective coatings (Sikagard / Permacor lines), MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (MasterProtect epoxy and MIO systems), Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) industrial epoxy coatings, and STP’s protective and tank-lining coatings. The right choice depends on the substrate mix, chemical exposure, immersion conditions and whether a UV-stable finish is needed; Space Arc Engineering can compare these on a like-for-like specification basis and recommend the most cost-effective compliant system for your project.
