Fosroc Nitocote SN515
Single-component penetrating silane-siloxane impregnation that builds a hydrophobic lining inside concrete pores — cutting water and chloride ingress while letting the structure breathe.
What is it?
A single-component, colourless penetrating silane-siloxane water-repellent impregnation. It soaks into porous concrete and masonry, then reacts in the pore walls to form a bonded hydrophobic lining rather than a surface film.
Where is it used?
Atmospherically exposed RCC and masonry in coastal, marine and de-icing-salt environments — bridge decks and piers, parking structures, facades, water-retaining and marine structures, and exposed precast across India.
Why use it?
It markedly reduces absorption of water and water-borne chloride salts (the main drivers of rebar corrosion and freeze-thaw damage) while still allowing water vapour to escape, so the concrete dries out instead of trapping moisture. It is non-staining and does not change surface appearance.
How is it applied?
Apply by low-pressure flood spray (or roller) onto a clean, dry, sound substrate, typically in two saturation coats wet-on-wet to a uniform run-down, observing the recommended overcoating interval and coverage rate for the substrate’s porosity.
About Fosroc Nitocote SN515
Fosroc Nitocote SN515 belongs to Fosroc’s Nitocote SN family of penetrating silane and silane-siloxane surface treatments — the same range that includes the surface-sitting siloxane SN502, the deeply penetrating high-solids silane SN511, the thixotropic SN508 Crème, and the monomeric silane SN525. Within that family, SN515 is described by Fosroc as a single-component, penetrating silane-siloxane that penetrates into porous substrates and then reacts to produce a bonded, water-repellent lining inside the pores. It is not a paint or a film-forming membrane; the active chemistry reacts with moisture and the alkaline substrate to anchor a hydrophobic layer on the internal pore surfaces, leaving the concrete looking essentially unchanged. Because it is a silane-siloxane blend, SN515 carries a smaller, deeply-penetrating silane fraction together with a larger siloxane fraction that sits nearer the surface — a balance designed to give useful penetration on a wide range of porosities while reducing material loss to evaporation on dense or windy facades. The treatment is non-staining, resists UV and atmospheric contaminants, increases freeze-thaw resistance, and minimises efflorescence. Crucially, it is vapour-permeable: it slows liquid water and dissolved salts going in while still letting water vapour diffuse out, so it protects the reinforcement without sealing moisture inside the slab. For Indian specifiers, SN515 fits the same brief as the better-known Nitocote SN502 and SN522 already sold widely here — anti-carbonation and anti-chloride impregnation for durability — and is best read as the silane-siloxane option sitting between the surface-active SN502 and the deep-penetrating SN511.
The technical insight
The durability mechanism is hydrophobic impregnation, not barrier coating. Reinforced-concrete deterioration in Indian coastal and industrial settings is driven by chloride ions and CO2 migrating through the capillary pore network in solution; once chloride at the rebar exceeds the threshold, the passive film breaks down and corrosion begins. SN515’s silane-siloxane reacts with pore moisture and substrate alkali to bond alkyl-siloxane groups onto the pore walls, lowering the surface energy so capillary suction no longer pulls liquid water (and the salts dissolved in it) into the concrete. The pores are lined, not plugged — so water vapour still diffuses outward and the slab is not trapped wet. The silane-siloxane blend is the engineering compromise: the small silane molecules penetrate deeper for durability, while the siloxane oligomers stay nearer the surface, reduce volatile loss and give the visible water-beading effect. For this chemistry family Fosroc publishes water-absorption reductions in excess of 80% and chloride-ingress reductions above 95% (measured on the comparable SN511 to NCHRP 244), achieved by flood-coat application at the recommended rate rather than by film thickness. Two practical consequences follow: there is no measurable dry-film thickness to specify (penetration depth, not DFT, governs performance), and surface dryness plus correct coverage matter far more than they do for a paint — under-application or a damp substrate quietly halves the result.
Where it is used
- Chloride and carbonation protection of atmospherically exposed RCC in coastal and marine zones (jetties, sea-facing facades, splash-zone superstructure above the immersion line)
- Durability impregnation of bridge decks, piers, abutments, crash barriers and parapets exposed to rain, run-off and de-icing salts
- Parking structures, podium decks and ramps where chloride-laden water and freeze-thaw cycling attack the slab
- Precast and cast-in-situ concrete facades, fins and cladding where a non-staining, appearance-neutral water repellent is required
- Masonry, fair-faced brickwork, cement render and natural/cast stone on building exteriors to cut rain penetration and efflorescence
- Water-retaining and water-handling structures (tank exteriors, channels) where breathable water-repellency is preferred over a sealing film
Key advantages
- Penetrates and reacts inside the pores to form a bonded hydrophobic lining rather than a surface film that can peel or blister
- Significantly reduces ingress of water and water-borne chloride salts, directly extending reinforcement service life
- Remains vapour-permeable — lets the concrete breathe and dry out instead of trapping moisture behind a membrane
- Non-staining and appearance-neutral; does not gloss, darken or change the look of fair-faced concrete or masonry
- Single-component and ready to use — no mixing, no pot-life management on site
- Increases freeze-thaw resistance and minimises efflorescence
- UV-stable and resistant to atmospheric contaminants, so performance does not depend on a topcoat
- Silane-siloxane blend balances penetration depth with low evaporative loss, making it workable on a range of porosities and in warmer conditions
Limitations & considerations
- Not a crack-bridging or waterproofing membrane — it will not span moving cracks or resist standing water/hydrostatic head; immersed or below-grade tanking needs a membrane such as Brushbond or a Nitoproof/Nitcoat system
- Performance depends on penetration, so substrate must be sound, clean and dry; application onto damp or contaminated concrete sharply reduces effectiveness
- Provides no decorative colour or build; where an anti-carbonation colour coat is wanted, pair with or specify a film-forming acrylic such as Dekguard
- Reactive silane chemistry hydrolyses with atmospheric moisture — opened containers have a short usable window and should not be left part-used for long periods
- Hydrostatic pressure on deeply immersed concrete can still force water and chloride through a silane treatment, so it is a measure for atmospheric/splash zones, not permanent immersion
- Coverage is highly substrate-dependent; porous or textured surfaces consume more product, and under-application is the most common cause of under-performance
- Always confirm the current SN515 TDS/SDS and a site trial area before specification, as published application data and grade availability can vary by region
Selection & best practice
Specify on penetration and coverage, not film thickness. Begin with a trial area on the actual substrate to fix the real consumption rate, since porosity drives it. Ensure the surface is sound, clean and genuinely dry — remove laitance, curing compounds, oil, algae and loose matter, and mask glass, plants, bitumen, plastics and painted finishes. Apply by low-pressure flood spray (or roller for small areas) working bottom-up on verticals to a continuous mirror-wet run-down, in two saturation coats observing the family-typical overcoating interval (of the order of several hours at ~20 deg C). Do not over-spray to atomise the product, and keep it in liquid contact with the surface for a few seconds. Confirm penetration by water-uptake core testing on a representative area for important works, allow the concrete to dry before exposure, and always cross-check the current Fosroc SN515 TDS for the grade-specific coverage, overcoating time and pack data before ordering.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote SN515
Within Fosroc’s Nitocote SN portfolio, SN515 is the silane-siloxane middle ground: deeper-reaching than the surface-active Nitocote SN502 but not the high-solids deep penetrator that Nitocote SN511 (>98% silane) is, with SN508 Crème serving windy/hot conditions and SN525 covering monomeric-silane deep impregnation. It is a durability impregnation, not a finish — so on real projects it is usually specified upstream of, or instead of, a film-forming anti-carbonation coat such as Fosroc Dekguard, and entirely separately from membrane systems like Fosroc Brushbond or Nitoproof, which handle crack-bridging and standing-water waterproofing that SN515 deliberately does not. Against the wider Indian market, the honest comparison set is Sika (Sikagard-700 S and 706 Thixo cream), MYK/MBS penetrating silanes, Dr. Fixit’s water-repellent range, and STP — all credible silane/silane-siloxane impregnations. For Space Arc clients, the deciding factors are active-silane content, penetration depth on the actual substrate, vapour permeability and a current TDS, rather than brand name; SN515 earns its place where a breathable, non-staining, appearance-neutral chloride/carbonation impregnation is wanted on exposed concrete and masonry. As the authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator for Delhi NCR and pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can confirm current SN515 grade availability, pack sizes and the latest TDS, and advise on the right Nitocote variant for your exposure.
