What is it?

A single-component, water-based acrylic elastomeric coating that combines exterior wall waterproofing with a durable decorative finish, applied at roughly 110 micron dry film thickness over two coats.

Where is it used?

External masonry, concrete and cement-sand plastered facades of buildings, especially high-rise and coastal structures exposed to wind-driven rain across India.

Why use it?

It stops rain ingress and dampness while bridging hairline cracks up to and beyond 0.5 mm, remaining flexible, UV-stable, breathable and resistant to algae and fungal attack.

How is it applied?

Surface is cleaned and primed with Nitoprime AW, then two coats of Wallguard are applied by brush, roller or spray with a 5-6 hour gap between coats, curing fully in about 7 days.

About Fosroc Nitocote Wallguard

Fosroc Nitocote Wallguard is a single-component, water-based acrylic polymer coating engineered to protect and decorate the exterior walls of buildings in one operation. It is formulated from high-quality acrylic emulsion, weather-resistant pigments and carefully graded fine fillers, producing an elastomeric film that waterproofs masonry while accommodating the natural movement of a building. For specifiers and contractors in India, the appeal is simple: instead of treating waterproofing and finish paint as two separate scopes, Wallguard delivers a tough, flexible, breathable membrane that also serves as the visible facade colour. It is positioned within the Fosroc Nitocote family of protective coatings and is intended for both new construction and the refurbishment of weathered, leaking external walls. The product is supplied in white, midtone and dark bases, allowing it to be tinted to a wide range of architectural shades, and it pairs with the Nitoprime AW acrylic primer for reliable adhesion to cementitious substrates. Because it is water-based and ready to use without dilution, it is straightforward to apply on site with standard painting equipment, which keeps it practical for the large facade areas typical of Indian residential, commercial and institutional projects. Where heavy monsoon rain, coastal salt exposure and thermal cycling routinely defeat conventional exterior emulsions, Wallguard is chosen specifically for its crack-bridging elastomeric behaviour and its resistance to UV, dirt pick-up and microbial growth, making it a durable line of defence for the building envelope.

The technical insight

The defining characteristic of Nitocote Wallguard is its elastomeric film chemistry. The cured coating delivers more than 100% elongation when applied at 110 micron dry film thickness, tested to ASTM D412-02, which is what allows it to stretch across hairline cracks rather than tear over them. Crack-bridging capability is verified to ASTM C836, passing cracks in excess of 0.5 mm width, while tensile strength exceeds 2.0 N/mm2 at 250 micron and adhesion to the substrate is around 1.3 N/mm2. Equally important for an exterior coating is its balance of waterproofing and breathability: the film resists liquid water ingress and wind-driven rain, yet permits water vapour to escape at roughly 22 g/m2/day (ASTM E96), so internal moisture is not trapped behind the coating where it could cause blistering. Durability is supported by a ‘very low’ rating in the rapid chloride penetration test (ASTM C1202-97), which is directly relevant to coastal and chloride-laden environments, and by accelerated weathering showing no defects after 1000 hours of UV exposure (ASTM D4587). With a specific gravity of about 1.29 and a high-build film achieved over two coats, the system is designed to be both protective and long-lasting, rather than a thin cosmetic paint layer.

Where it is used

  • Waterproofing and decorating exterior masonry and RCC facades of residential and commercial buildings
  • Protecting high-rise external walls against heavy, wind-driven monsoon rain
  • Coating buildings in coastal and high-humidity zones where salt and dampness attack the envelope
  • Refurbishing old, weathered or hairline-cracked exterior walls that leak or show damp patches
  • Finishing concrete, brick and cement-sand plastered surfaces with a single waterproof-plus-colour system
  • Treating parapet walls, chajjas and other exposed external surfaces prone to rain penetration

Key advantages

  • Combines exterior waterproofing and decorative finish in one acrylic elastomeric system
  • High elongation (over 100% at 110 micron DFT) bridges hairline cracks up to and beyond 0.5 mm
  • High-build flexible film withstands wind-driven rain and prevents dampness on external walls
  • Breathable, allowing internal moisture vapour to escape and reducing blistering risk
  • UV-stable with low dirt pick-up, helping the facade retain appearance over time
  • Microbial resistance to algae, fungi and bacterial growth, useful in humid and coastal climates
  • Water-based and ready to use, with easy application by brush, roller or spray and water clean-up
  • Available in white, midtone and dark bases for a broad range of tinted architectural shades

Limitations & considerations

  • Strictly an exterior, above-ground wall coating, not a structural or below-grade tanking membrane
  • Requires dry substrates; ambient, surface and material temperature must be between 10 and 40 degrees C during application
  • Needs the correct Nitoprime AW primer and proper surface preparation for reliable adhesion and performance
  • Performance depends on achieving the specified 110 micron DFT over two coats with the correct overcoat interval
  • Does not address rising damp or active hydrostatic water pressure, which need dedicated waterproofing systems
  • Shelf life is limited (18 months for current packs) and is greatly reduced by exposure to moisture in storage
  • Practical coverage varies with substrate porosity, so site mock-ups are advisable for material estimation

Selection & best practice

Begin with thorough surface preparation: the wall must be sound, dry and free of oil, grease, loose particles, laitance, curing compounds and any moss or algae, which should be treated with a proprietary biocide and washed off. Allow newly plastered or treated surfaces to dry and cure adequately, then apply one coat of Nitoprime AW (diluted as directed, covering about 8-10 m2/litre) and allow it to dry. Stir Wallguard thoroughly for at least two minutes with a slow-speed (300-400 rpm) paddle drill; do not dilute. Apply the first coat by nylon brush, felt roller or spray, let it dry for 5-6 hours at around 30 degrees C, then apply the second coat to build the full film, targeting the theoretical rate of 3 to 3.5 m2/litre for two coats and a finished thickness near 110 micron DFT. Do not start application if the substrate is below 10 degrees C or if rain is imminent, observe the correct overcoating interval to develop waterproof properties, and protect fresh coats from rain until tack-free (about 5-6 hours), allowing roughly 7 days for full cure. Clean all tools with water immediately after use, and always confirm the current TDS and a project-specific specification before large-scale application.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitocote Wallguard a waterproofing product or just an exterior paint?
It is both. Wallguard is a water-based acrylic elastomeric coating that functions as a waterproofing membrane for exterior walls while also serving as the decorative finish. Its high-build, flexible film prevents rain ingress and dampness, and unlike ordinary exterior emulsion it bridges hairline cracks and stretches with structural movement. It is intended for above-ground external masonry, not for below-grade tanking or rising-damp situations.
How much elongation does it have and what cracks can it bridge?
When applied at the recommended 110 micron dry film thickness, the cured film delivers more than 100% elongation (ASTM D412-02) and bridges cracks in excess of 0.5 mm width (ASTM C836). This elastomeric behaviour is what lets it accommodate thermal expansion and contraction and span hairline cracks that would otherwise allow water in.
What is the coverage and how many coats are needed?
The theoretical coverage is 3 to 3.5 m2 per litre for two coats, applied over a Nitoprime AW primer coat. Two coats are required to build the specified film thickness of around 110 micron. Practical coverage varies with how porous and textured the substrate is, so allow for higher consumption on rough or absorbent surfaces and confirm with a site trial.
Does it need a primer and how is it applied?
Yes. A coat of Nitoprime AW acrylic primer (about 8-10 m2/litre after dilution) is applied to the prepared, dry surface first. Wallguard is then stirred for at least two minutes with a slow-speed paddle, applied without dilution by nylon brush, felt roller or spray, with the first coat allowed to dry 5-6 hours at around 30 degrees C before the second coat. It should not be applied below 10 degrees C or when rain is imminent.
How long does it take to dry and fully cure?
The coating becomes tack-free in approximately 5-6 hours, the second coat can follow the first after about 5-6 hours at 30 degrees C, and the system is fully cured in about 7 days. Cooler or more humid conditions extend these times, and fresh coats should be protected from rain until tack-free.
What pack sizes and colours are available, and what is the shelf life?
It is supplied in white, midtone and dark bases that can be tinted to a range of shades. White base comes in 20, 4 and 1 litre packs, while dark and midtone bases come in 19, 3.8 and 0.95 litre packs. Shelf life is 18 months in unopened containers stored in dry, normal warehouse conditions; moisture exposure shortens it significantly. Space Arc Engineering can confirm current shades, pack availability and lead times for Delhi NCR and Pan-India supply.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote Wallguard

Within the Fosroc protective-coatings range, Nitocote Wallguard sits as the workhorse elastomeric exterior wall coating, with the higher-performance Nitocote Wallguard Premium positioned above it for projects needing stronger inter-coat adhesion and longer-term protection. It complements rather than replaces Fosroc’s cementitious and waterproofing systems: Nitoproof and Brushbond-type membranes are used for terraces, wet areas and below-grade waterproofing, Nitobond acrylic bonding agents and Nitoprime AW prepare the substrate, and Nitocote CM210 addresses concrete protection in more aggressive exposures. Against the wider Indian market, Wallguard competes most directly with elastomeric exterior coatings such as Sika’s exterior wall and elastomeric coating range, Dr. Fixit Raincoat and Newcoat from Pidilite, MYK Laticrete and STP (Shalimar/STP) facade coatings, and premium exterior emulsions positioned as waterproof from decorative-paint majors. Where many of those alternatives are sold primarily as waterproof exterior paints, Wallguard’s documented ASTM-tested elongation, crack-bridging and chloride-resistance data make it a credible specification-grade choice for consultants and architects who want verified performance numbers rather than marketing claims. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply Wallguard alongside the correct primer and companion Fosroc systems, and advise on whether the standard grade, the Premium grade, or a dedicated membrane is the right fit for a given facade. Specifiers should always validate against the current Fosroc TDS for the destination region before finalising a specification.
