BrandFosrocCategoryIndustrial FlooringFormA ready-to-use, single-component white liquid primer based on synthetic acrylic and styrene copolymer resin. It is…

What is it?

A ready-to-use, single-component white liquid primer based on synthetic acrylic and styrene copolymer resin. It is the dedicated bonding-and-sealing primer for Fosroc’s Cemtop range of thin cementitious floor toppings and underlays.

Where is it used?

On prepared concrete and sound sand-cement screeds, immediately before laying Cemtop cementitious self-levelling toppings such as Cemtop Micro T in industrial, commercial, institutional and residential floors.

Why use it?

It seals the substrate to stop air rising into the wet topping (which causes pinholes and blisters), improves wetting and adhesion at the bond line, and prevents the cementitious topping from drying out too fast against an absorbent slab.

How is it applied?

Applied undiluted by brush and worked in by broom, never sprayed or rolled. A second coat follows once the first is touch-dry, and a third is added on highly porous substrates. The topping is laid only after the primer reaches a tack-free state, with all ponding avoided.

About Fosroc Nitoflor Cemprime 1

Fosroc Nitoflor Cemprime 1 is a purpose-built primer in the Nitoflor industrial-flooring family, engineered specifically to prepare concrete for Fosroc’s Cemtop range of thin cementitious wearing courses and underlays. Unlike the epoxy and polyurethane primers that dominate resin-flooring systems, Cemprime 1 is supplied as a single-component, water-thin white liquid based on synthetic acrylic and styrene copolymer resin. That formulation is deliberate: a cementitious topping such as Cemtop Micro T is itself a cement-and-polymer system, and pairing it with a flexible acrylic/styrene primer gives a chemically compatible bond line without the pot-life pressure or solvent handling of a two-part epoxy.\n\nIts job on site is twofold. First, it seals the prepared slab so that air trapped in the concrete cannot rise through the freshly poured topping and form bubbles, pinholes and craters in the finished floor — a very common failure when thin cementitious toppings are placed straight onto an unsealed, porous slab. Second, it acts as a bonding bridge, wetting the substrate, improving adhesion between concrete and topping, and slowing moisture loss from the topping so it cures evenly rather than \”burning off\” against a thirsty slab. For contractors in India this is a low-skill, high-impact step: a primer that is simply brushed and broomed in, dries quickly, and dramatically reduces the risk of a callback on a Cemtop floor.\n\nFor Space Arc Engineering’s customers — flooring applicators, PMC consultants, architects and procurement teams across Delhi NCR and pan-India — Cemprime 1 is best understood not as a standalone product but as a mandatory companion to the Cemtop topping system. It is sold in 5-litre containers, carries a 12-month shelf life, and is the primer Fosroc’s own Cemtop datasheets specify by name.

The technical insight

The defining technical point is that Cemprime 1 is an acrylic/styrene copolymer primer, not an epoxy. Cementitious toppings need a primer that seals and bonds while remaining chemically and mechanically compatible with a polymer-modified cement matrix; a rigid, fully cured epoxy primer can create a slip plane or trap moisture under a cement topping. The acrylic/styrene film forms an impermeable but flexible barrier that blocks air and excess substrate suction yet remains part of a cement-friendly system. Application discipline is what makes it work: it must be used at full strength with no dilution, brushed and then broomed into the surface so enough material is deposited (spray and roller deposit too little film), and never left as a puddle, because ponded primer cures into a weak skin that fails at the bond line. Each coat must be touch-dry before the next, and the final coat must reach a true tack-free state before the topping is poured — laying a topping onto tacky primer pulls the primer into the mix and marks the floor. Because it is single-component, there is no pot life to manage, which is a genuine site advantage over epoxy primers on large pour areas.

Where it is used

  • Priming and sealing concrete slabs before Fosroc Cemtop Micro T and other Cemtop cementitious self-levelling toppings (1 mm to 5 mm)
  • Sealing porous or highly absorbent concrete to prevent pinholing, bubbling and blistering in thin cementitious wearing courses
  • Improving bond between an existing/old concrete floor and a new cementitious overlay during floor refurbishment and reinstatement
  • Reducing rapid moisture loss from cementitious toppings poured over dry, suction-prone slabs in warm Indian site conditions
  • Preparing sound sand-cement screeds to receive a decorative or industrial cementitious topping

Key advantages

  • Chemically matched to cementitious Cemtop toppings — flexible acrylic/styrene film bonds well to a polymer-modified cement matrix
  • Single component and ready to use — no mixing, no hardener, and no pot life to race against on large floors
  • Effectively seals porous concrete, sharply reducing pinholes, bubbles and craters in the finished topping
  • Simple, low-skill application — brushed and broomed in, no specialist equipment needed
  • Quick touch-dry/tack-free behaviour keeps the flooring sequence moving on a tight programme
  • Water-thin white liquid that wets and penetrates the substrate for reliable adhesion
  • Convenient 5 L pack and a 12-month shelf life suit project-based procurement

Limitations & considerations

  • Purpose-built for Fosroc Cemtop cementitious toppings — it is not a primer for epoxy/PU resin floor systems (use Nitoprime SP/25 or the relevant Nitoprime for those)
  • Must be applied undiluted; thinning it down to stretch coverage defeats the sealing function
  • Spray and roller application are not recommended because they deposit insufficient film — brush-and-broom only
  • Ponding/puddling must be avoided as cured primer pools form a weak layer that fails at the bond line
  • Substrate must be sound, clean, dry and free of oil, grease, laitance and curing compounds before priming
  • Not a structural, waterproofing or damp-proofing product — it does not cure a slab suffering rising damp
  • Topping must be laid only after the primer is fully tack-free; laying onto tacky primer marks the floor

Selection & best practice

Prepare the slab mechanically first — grind, scabble or blast off laitance, curing compound and contamination, then vacuum and confirm the concrete is sound, dry and within Cemtop’s substrate limits (typically a minimum 25 N/mm2 compressive or >1.25 N/mm2 surface tensile strength and relative humidity not exceeding 75%, or 80% where a Nitoflor resin coat will follow). Apply Cemprime 1 undiluted, brushing it on and working it into the surface with a broom so no puddles form. Once the first coat is touch-dry, apply a second coat the same way; on highly porous or very absorbent slabs add a third coat. Allow the final coat to reach a genuine tack-free state, then pour the Cemtop topping promptly so the system bonds as one. Always run a trial area to confirm coverage and substrate suitability, and store the primer below 20°C in unopened containers, using within the 12-month shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoflor Cemprime 1 an epoxy primer?
No. It is a single-component, water-thin acrylic/styrene copolymer primer, not a two-part epoxy. It is formulated to be compatible with cementitious toppings. For epoxy and polyurethane resin floor systems you would use an epoxy primer such as Fosroc Nitoprime SP or Nitoprime 25 instead.
What is Nitoflor Cemprime 1 used with?
It is the dedicated primer for Fosroc’s Cemtop range of thin cementitious floor toppings and underlays, such as Cemtop Micro T (laid 1 mm to 5 mm). It seals the slab and bonds the topping to the concrete.
Can I dilute Cemprime 1 or apply it by spray or roller?
No. It must be applied undiluted and worked into the surface with a brush and broom. Spray and roller application are not recommended because they leave too little film to seal the substrate effectively, and diluting it weakens the seal.
How many coats are needed and when do I lay the topping?
Apply two coats as standard, with the second going on once the first is touch-dry; add a third coat on highly porous substrates. The cementitious topping is poured only after the final primer coat has reached a fully tack-free state. Avoid any ponding of primer.
What pack size and shelf life does it have?
Nitoflor Cemprime 1 is supplied in 5-litre containers and has a 12-month shelf life when stored below 20°C in original, unopened packs.
Does Cemprime 1 waterproof or fix a damp slab?
No. It is a bonding-and-sealing primer for cementitious toppings, not a waterproofing membrane or damp-proof course. If the slab suffers from rising damp, that must be addressed separately before any topping system is applied.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Cemprime 1

Nitoflor Cemprime 1 occupies a narrow but important niche: it is the cementitious-topping primer in the Fosroc Nitoflor/Cemtop ecosystem, and it is specified by name to go under Cemtop Micro T and the wider Cemtop range. That makes it a complement, not a competitor, to Fosroc’s resin-flooring primers. Where the floor is an epoxy or PU system, the right Fosroc choice is Nitoprime SP or Nitoprime 25 (solvent-based epoxy primers for the Nitoflor FC/SL resin toppings), or Nitoprime AW where a water-based acrylic coating follows; Cemprime 1 is not interchangeable with these. For polymer-modified cement bonding more broadly, Fosroc’s own Nitobond SBR (a styrene-butadiene bonding agent) addresses site-batched screeds and mortars rather than priming under a factory Cemtop topping. Among credible alternatives Indian specifiers will recognise, Sika offers cementitious microtopping systems (e.g. Sika decorative/Level toppings) with their matched SikaFloor/Sika primers, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) and MBCC/MBS-lineage products supply SBR and acrylic bonding primers, and STP supplies bonding agents — but none of these is a drop-in substitute for Cemprime 1 specifically under a Fosroc Cemtop floor, because the primer and topping are validated as one system. The honest positioning is therefore simple: if the topping is Fosroc Cemtop, use Cemprime 1; if you switch the topping brand, switch to that manufacturer’s matched primer rather than mixing systems. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator in Delhi NCR and pan-India, supplies Cemprime 1 alongside the full Cemtop and Nitoflor flooring range so the primer-topping pairing is kept correct on every project.
