What is it?

A flow-applied, solvent-free epoxy resin floor topping laid at 1–1.5 mm. Graded aggregate is bound in a pigmented epoxy binder and self-smooths into a dense, impervious, coloured and seamless surface over prepared concrete.

Where is it used?

Clean rooms, pharmaceutical and laboratory areas, light industrial plants, warehouses and maintenance areas, exhibition halls and showrooms, power stations, aircraft hangars, dry production areas, and garages or traffic decking carrying light-to-medium-duty vehicles.

Why use it?

It upgrades grey concrete to a hygienic, chemically resistant, abrasion-resistant and easy-to-clean floor with low odour and no fire hazard during application — at a thinner build (and lower cost per m²) than 2–4 mm heavy-duty toppings where service demands are light to medium.

How is it applied?

Specialist applicators prepare the concrete (grit-blast or grind), prime with a Fosroc epoxy primer (Nitoprime range), then pour the mixed four-component material, spread to thickness with a serrated trowel and de-aerate with a spiked roller. Foot traffic typically at ~24 h, vehicular at ~48 h, full chemical cure at 7 days.

About Fosroc Nitoflor SL1

Fosroc Nitoflor SL1 is a flow-applied, 1–1.5 mm thick epoxy resin floor topping designed for industrial environments that need a lasting answer to floor-maintenance problems. Concrete on its own is porous, dusts under traffic, stains, and is difficult to keep clean — Nitoflor SL1 seals it under a dense, impervious, coloured and seamless epoxy skin that is hygienic, wears well and wipes clean. It sits at the thin end of Fosroc’s self-levelling Nitoflor SL family: where the heavier SL2000 (2 mm), SL3000 (3 mm) and SL4000 grades target medium-to-heavy duty, SL1 is the light-to-medium-duty, economical option for areas that do not see severe impact or heavy point loads. The product is a solvent-free epoxy, so application is low in odour and free of the fire hazard associated with solvent-borne coatings — a real advantage when working inside occupied or sensitive buildings such as hospitals, labs and food or pharma plants. Like the rest of the range it is supplied as a pre-weighed, multi-component pack (base, hardener, graded aggregate and a colour pack) so that on-site mixing is consistent and operator error is minimised; part-mixing is not permitted. Once laid and rolled it self-smooths to a light-reflective finish in a choice of standard colours, brightening the working environment as well as protecting the slab. For Indian projects, Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoflor SL1 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with method-statement-driven installation by trained crews.

The technical insight

Nitoflor SL1 is best understood as a thin self-smoothing epoxy topping rather than a coating or a screed. Its performance comes from graded aggregate suspended in a pigmented epoxy binder: the aggregate gives abrasion and compressive resistance while the epoxy matrix delivers chemical resistance, adhesion and the impervious, seamless finish. At 1–1.5 mm it is a topping that bonds monolithically to a sound, primed concrete substrate — it is not a stand-alone slab and contributes little structural capacity of its own, so the concrete below must carry the loads. That is why substrate quality governs the result: Fosroc’s SL system requires concrete that is at least 28 days old, with surface moisture content not exceeding ~5% and relative humidity below 75%, free of laitance, oil and curing compounds. Priming with a Fosroc epoxy primer (the SL range uses Nitoprime 25, a solvent-based epoxy primer engineered for maximum absorption into concrete) is essential to develop bond and to stop pinholing from substrate out-gassing. Because the section is thin, surface profile telegraphs through — the finish is only ever as flat as the prepared substrate, and at 1–1.5 mm it tolerates less unevenness than a 3 mm topping. Cure follows standard epoxy behaviour: faster at higher Indian ambient temperatures and slower in cool conditions, with foot traffic typically around 24 hours, vehicular around 48 hours and full chemical resistance at 7 days. As with all epoxies, some long-term shade change can occur under strong UV, which is cosmetic rather than structural.

Where it is used

  • Clean rooms and controlled environments needing a seamless, washable floor
  • Pharmaceutical, medical and laboratory areas where hygiene and chemical resistance matter
  • Light industrial production and assembly plants
  • Warehouses, storage and maintenance areas with light-to-medium traffic
  • Exhibition halls, showrooms and display areas needing an attractive coloured finish
  • Power stations and plant rooms
  • Aircraft hangars and dry production areas
  • Garages and traffic decking carrying light-to-medium-duty vehicles

Key advantages

  • Solvent-free — low odour during application and no fire hazard, suitable for occupied and sensitive buildings
  • Seamless, dense and impervious finish that is hygienic and easy to clean, with no joints to harbour dirt
  • Good resistance to a wide range of industrial chemicals at ambient temperature
  • Good abrasion and wear resistance for everyday industrial traffic
  • Self-smoothing flow application gives a smooth, light-reflective surface
  • Available in a wide range of standard colours to brighten and zone the working environment
  • Pre-weighed multi-component packs reduce on-site mixing error and give consistent results
  • Thinner 1–1.5 mm build is more economical per m² than heavy-duty toppings where duty is light-to-medium

Limitations & considerations

  • Not intended for heavy-duty service — for medium-to-heavy impact, abrasion or point loads, step up to Nitoflor SL2000/SL3000 or a screed-grade system
  • Thin 1–1.5 mm section telegraphs substrate profile; the finish is only as flat as the prepared concrete and offers limited crack-bridging
  • Must not be applied over surfaces subject to rising damp, osmosis risk or relative humidity above 75% (per BS 8203)
  • Not suitable for asphalt, weak or friable concrete, unmodified sand/cement screeds, or PVC tiles/sheet
  • Requires concrete at least 28 days old with moisture content not exceeding ~5% and proper mechanical preparation plus priming
  • Application temperature must stay within the epoxy’s working window (typically not below ~10°C); pot life shortens sharply in hot Indian conditions
  • As with all epoxies, some long-term shade change can occur under strong UV — cosmetic only
  • Must be installed by trained specialist applicators following the Fosroc Product Method Statement

Selection & best practice

Treat substrate preparation as the job, not a preliminary. Mechanically prepare (grit-blast, scabble or grind) to remove laitance, curing compounds, oil and old coatings, and confirm the concrete is at least 28 days old with moisture content not exceeding ~5% and RH below 75% before any product goes down. Prime with the specified Fosroc epoxy primer and apply Nitoflor SL1 only once the primer is touch-dry but still within its overcoat window — never over a tacky or fully-cured-and-dusty primer. Mix complete pre-weighed packs in full (base, hardener, aggregate, colour) using a slow-speed paddle; never part-mix. Plan labour and materials so pouring is continuous across each bay, pour as soon as mixing is complete, spread to a uniform 1–1.5 mm with a serrated trowel and de-aerate immediately with a spiked roller to clear trowel marks and entrained air. Carry all existing movement and expansion joints through the new surface. In Delhi NCR summer conditions, work in the cooler part of the day, keep material shaded and respect the reduced pot life. Allow ~24 h before foot traffic, ~48 h before vehicles and 7 days for full chemical resistance, and protect the floor from spills and heavy use until then.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is Fosroc Nitoflor SL1?
It is a flow-applied, solvent-free epoxy resin floor topping laid at 1–1.5 mm thickness. Graded aggregate is bound in a pigmented epoxy binder that self-smooths over prepared, primed concrete to give a dense, impervious, coloured and seamless industrial floor that is hygienic and easy to clean.
How thick is Nitoflor SL1 and how does it compare to other Nitoflor SL grades?
SL1 is applied at a nominal 1–1.5 mm, making it the thin, light-to-medium-duty member of the self-levelling Nitoflor SL family. For heavier service you step up in thickness and duty to grades such as SL2000 (2 mm) and SL3000 (3 mm), which carry higher impact, abrasion and load demands.
Does Nitoflor SL1 need a primer, and what surface preparation is required?
Yes. The concrete must be mechanically prepared — grit-blasting, scabbling or grinding to remove laitance, oil and curing compounds — and then primed with a Fosroc epoxy primer (the SL system uses Nitoprime 25). New concrete should be at least 28 days old with moisture content under ~5% and relative humidity below 75%. Priming is essential for bond and to prevent pinholing.
How soon can the floor be used after laying?
As a typical epoxy system, foot traffic is generally possible at around 24 hours, vehicular traffic at around 48 hours, and full chemical resistance at 7 days. Cure is faster in warm Indian ambient conditions and slower when it is cool; confirm exact times for your site temperature with the current TDS.
Where should Nitoflor SL1 not be used?
Avoid it where heavy-duty impact, abrasion or point loads are expected (choose a thicker SL grade or a screed instead), and on surfaces subject to rising damp, osmosis risk or RH above 75%. It is also not suitable over asphalt, weak or friable concrete, unmodified sand/cement screeds, or PVC tiles and sheet.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor SL1

Nitoflor SL1 is the entry point into Fosroc’s self-levelling epoxy flooring ladder: choose it for light-to-medium-duty hygiene and protection at a thin 1–1.5 mm build, and move up to Nitoflor SL2000 (2 mm), Nitoflor SL3000 (3 mm) or heavier toppings as impact, abrasion and load demands increase. It pairs naturally with the wider Fosroc system — Nitoprime 25 as the epoxy primer, Nitoflor FC150 HP as an anti-slip or refresh topcoat, Nitoflor Sol for tool cleaning, and Nitobond EP / Nitomortar repair products to make good the concrete before flooring. Where requirements differ, credible alternatives in the Indian market include Sika’s Sikafloor self-levelling epoxy range (e.g. Sikafloor-261/263 build-ups), MYK Arment / MBS epoxy self-levellers, BASF MasterTop systems, and STP’s industrial epoxy flooring; Dr. Fixit is better known for waterproofing than for thin epoxy toppings and is usually a secondary option here. Against these, Nitoflor SL1’s strengths are Fosroc’s established Indian supply chain, the pre-weighed multi-component pack that de-risks site mixing, and its solvent-free, low-odour formulation for occupied buildings. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can specify SL1 honestly against these alternatives and recommend a heavier Nitoflor grade or a different system when the duty genuinely calls for it.
