Fosroc Nitoseal RTV
Low-modulus, single-component neutral-cure silicone sealant for high-movement weatherproofing and natural-stone joints, with primerless adhesion and non-staining performance.
What is it?
A low-modulus, one-part neutral-cure (oxime/alkoxy) silicone sealant that cures with atmospheric moisture to form a tough, elastic rubber capable of high joint movement.
Where is it used?
Perimeter weatherproofing joints around windows, doors and curtain walling, glazing and natural-stone facades (marble, granite, sandstone, quartzite), cladding and precast panel joints.
Why use it?
It accommodates large cyclic movement, bonds to most substrates without a primer, resists UV and weathering for the long term, and does not stain or bleed into porous stone.
How is it applied?
Gun-applied from the cartridge into a correctly designed, clean, backer-rod-supported joint, then tooled to a firm concave finish before skin formation.
About Fosroc Nitoseal RTV
Fosroc Nitoseal RTV is a single-component, low-modulus, neutral-cure silicone sealant designed for movement and weatherproofing joints in building construction. “RTV” denotes room-temperature-vulcanising silicone: the sealant is gunned straight from the cartridge and cures by reaction with moisture in the air, with no mixing, no heat and no catalyst addition required on site. As it cures it converts from a smooth, tooling-friendly paste into a tough, permanently elastic rubber that flexes with the joint rather than cracking or pulling away from the joint arris.
The defining characteristic of the product is its neutral cure chemistry. Unlike older acetoxy (acid-cure) silicones that release acetic acid and can corrode metals or etch sensitive surfaces, Nitoseal RTV uses a neutral, non-toxic cross-linking system. That makes it safe on alkaline and porous substrates and, importantly for Indian facade work, compatible with natural stones such as marble, sandstone, granite and quartzite without the staining, oil migration or edge bleed that disfigures cladding when the wrong sealant is used. Fosroc confirms that the cured sealant does not stain and does not show bleed-out, and that it adheres to many common substrates without a separate primer.
Being low-modulus, the sealant develops low stress at the bond line as the joint opens and closes, which protects the adhesion to weaker or friable substrates and supports a high movement accommodation. Combined with excellent weatherability and UV stability inherent to silicone, this makes Nitoseal RTV a long-service exterior weather seal rather than a cosmetic filler. It sits in the Fosroc Nitoseal sealant family alongside polyurethane (PU) and MS-polymer grades, occupying the slot where a true silicone is required: glazing, stone, and exposed weather joints where paintability is not needed.
Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Fosroc Nitoseal RTV across Delhi NCR and Pan-India as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, with technical support on joint design, substrate compatibility and specification.
The technical insight
The engineering logic of Nitoseal RTV rests on three coupled properties: neutral cure, low modulus and high movement accommodation. Silicone polymers are intrinsically the most UV- and weather-durable sealant chemistry available, which is why silicones dominate exterior glazing and stone joints worldwide. The neutral (oxime/alkoxy) cure means the by-product released during cure is non-acidic, so the sealant will not corrode aluminium glazing frames, galvanised steel or reinforcement, and will not react with the calcium carbonate in marble or limestone. The low-modulus formulation is the second lever: because the sealant exerts low restoring stress at any given strain, the adhesive bond and the substrate edge are subjected to far smaller peeling and tearing forces during thermal and structural cycling. This is what allows a properly designed bead to survive the roughly +/-40% class of joint movement that Fosroc associates with the product, repeatedly, over many years. The third factor is the single-component moisture cure: curing proceeds inward from the exposed surface as atmospheric moisture diffuses in, forming a skin first and then progressively vulcanising through the section. The practical consequence is that very deep or fully confined beads cure slowly, which is precisely why silicone joints are designed shallow relative to their width and are backed with a closed-cell backer rod that both controls depth and presents a bond-breaking back face. Get the width-to-depth ratio and the two-sided (rather than three-sided) adhesion right, and the low-modulus silicone delivers its full movement capability; get it wrong and even the best chemistry will fail at the arris.
Where it is used
- Perimeter weatherproofing joints around aluminium and uPVC windows, doors and louvres
- Glazing and capping joints in curtain walling and structurally glazed facades (weather-seal duty)
- Movement and butt joints in natural-stone cladding – marble, granite, sandstone, quartzite
- Joints in dry-clad and ventilated facade systems where staining of porous stone must be avoided
- Expansion and connection joints between dissimilar facade materials (stone to metal, stone to concrete)
- Sealing around copings, parapets, flashings and other exposed exterior weather details
- Precast concrete panel joints and cladding rebate seals not subject to traffic or immersion
- General building weather joints requiring long-term UV durability without painting
Key advantages
- Single-component, gun-grade – no mixing, no proportioning errors, fast install
- Neutral cure – non-corrosive to metals and safe on alkaline and porous substrates
- Primerless adhesion to many common construction substrates, reducing labour and cost
- Compatible with natural stone (marble, sandstone, quartzite) without staining or bleed-out
- Low-modulus, high movement accommodation for durable exterior weather seals
- Excellent UV resistance and long-term weatherability typical of silicone
- Tough, rubber-like cured film that recovers after cyclic movement
- Tooled neatly to a clean, professional finish for visible facade joints
Limitations & considerations
- Cured silicone cannot be overpainted – unsuitable where a painted joint finish is required
- Not intended for trafficked floor joints, vehicular areas or continuous water-immersion duty (use a PU/MS or specialist grade)
- Single-component moisture cure means deep or fully confined sections cure slowly; correct joint depth and backer rod are essential
- Adhesion to certain plastics, bituminous, oily, damp or contaminated surfaces should be confirmed by a site adhesion test
- Silicone contamination can impair adhesion of subsequent paints, renders and other sealants on adjacent surfaces
- Should not be applied to actively wet, frozen or frosted substrates, or below the recommended application temperature
- Not a structural glazing adhesive on its own – structural silicone glazing requires the designated SSG product and engineering approval
Selection & best practice
Design the joint before specifying the sealant. For a moving weather joint, size the joint width so that the expected movement stays within the sealant’s movement accommodation (around +/-40% class), and detail the bead to the correct width-to-depth ratio – as a rule of thumb roughly 2:1 (width:depth) for joints up to about 12 mm wide, with a minimum bead depth (commonly 6 mm) to develop adhesion. Always install a closed-cell polyethylene backer rod (or bond-breaker tape in shallow joints) to control depth and enforce two-sided adhesion; never allow three-sided adhesion, which forces the sealant to tear instead of stretch. Prepare substrates so they are clean, sound, dry and free of dust, laitance, oil, old sealant and release agents. Nitoseal RTV is primerless on many substrates, but on questionable or porous surfaces use the Fosroc-recommended primer and run a site adhesion/compatibility test first – this matters especially on natural stone, where the wrong primer can itself cause staining. Mask the joint edges, gun the sealant in a continuous bead with no voids, then tool firmly to a concave profile to compact it against both faces before the skin forms, and remove masking immediately. Protect fresh joints from rain and traffic during the initial cure. Follow the current product Technical Data Sheet for application temperature limits, skinning and cure times, primer selection and pack details, as these can vary by region and revision.

How we position Fosroc Nitoseal RTV
Within the Fosroc Nitoseal range, Nitoseal RTV is the dedicated neutral-cure silicone for exterior weather and glazing joints and for natural-stone facades where UV durability and a non-staining bond line matter most. It complements rather than replaces the other Nitoseal chemistries: where you need a paintable, abrasion-tolerant joint or a general construction movement seal, the Nitoseal PU (polyurethane) grades and the Nitoseal MS (silyl-modified polymer) grades – which combine good adhesion with overpaintability – are the better fit, while Thioflex (polysulphide) remains the classic choice for many civil and fuel-resistant joints and Colpor is the hard-wearing pavement-grade sealant for trafficked road and floor joints. Choosing between them comes down to exposure, movement, paintability and substrate. Credible competitor equivalents for a neutral-cure facade/stone silicone include Sika’s Sikasil and Sikaflex weatherproofing silicone grades, MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterSeal silicone sealants, and STP (Choksey/Pidilite) silicone weather sealants; the right specification depends on the project’s movement class, stone type and warranty requirements. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator covering Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can help match Nitoseal RTV or an alternative Nitoseal grade to your joint design and provide application support.
