Fosroc Conplast WP400
Chloride-free hydrophobic integral waterproofing admixture that builds permeability resistance into the concrete mass — not just the surface.
What is it?
A liquid integral waterproofing admixture that reacts with cement hydration products to form a hydrophobic, pore-blocking material inside the concrete, reducing capillary water absorption throughout the mass.
Where is it used?
Basements, raft foundations, water-retaining structures, piles, marine and coastal RCC, manholes, sumps, retaining walls and precast units across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
Why use it?
Protection is integral, so it survives surface damage; it is chloride-free and bitumen/ammonia-free, and it helps lower the water-cement ratio for denser, stronger concrete.
How is it applied?
Dosed into the concrete mix water or added at the batching plant/mixer at the manufacturer-recommended rate, then mixed, placed, compacted and cured as normal structural concrete.
About Fosroc Conplast WP400
Fosroc Conplast WP400 is an integral waterproofing admixture engineered to reduce the permeability of structural and precast concrete from within the matrix rather than as a film applied to the finished surface. It is supplied as a turbid organic liquid that disperses instantly in the mix water. Once in the concrete, Conplast WP400 reacts with the products of cement hydration to generate a hydrophobic, pore-blocking material that lines and partially seals the capillary pore network. The result is a marked reduction in the rate at which external water is absorbed into hardened concrete, which is the dominant transport mechanism behind dampness, efflorescence and reinforcement corrosion in Indian sub-structures.
The “integral” approach is the key idea. Surface coatings, membranes and brush-applied compounds protect only as long as the applied layer remains intact; a single puncture, construction-joint defect or honeycomb pocket can let water in behind the barrier. Because Conplast WP400 is distributed throughout the concrete, its water-repellent action continues even where the surface is later chipped, drilled or abraded. This makes it a sensible base layer of defence in a multi-line waterproofing strategy — for example combined with an external membrane or a crystalline product at construction joints.
For Indian conditions, three practical attributes matter. First, it is chloride-free, so it is suitable for reinforced and prestressed concrete where chloride-induced corrosion is a real risk, particularly in coastal Mumbai, Chennai and Gujarat projects. Second, the formulation is described by Fosroc as a bitumen- and ammonia-free system, which avoids the odour and staining problems associated with older bituminous waterproofers. Third, by allowing a lower water-cement ratio at the same workability, it supports the denser, lower-permeability concrete that BIS durability provisions and water-retaining design philosophy both call for. Space Arc Engineering supplies Conplast WP400 as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical support on dosage trials and mix compatibility.
The technical insight
The mechanism is chemical, not just physical pore filling. The organic active in Conplast WP400 reacts with the calcium-bearing hydration products of cement to deposit a hydrophobic, water-repellent phase along the internal capillary pore walls. This does two things: it lowers the surface energy of the pore network so that liquid water is no longer drawn in by capillary suction, and it partially obstructs the pore pathways themselves. Capillary absorption — quantified in the lab as sorptivity or initial surface absorption — is the transport route most responsible for ingress of water and dissolved aggressive ions in buried and water-contact concrete, so suppressing it directly improves durability. Importantly, the admixture is a permeability reducer for non-hydrostatic and low-head conditions; it is not a substitute for a designed waterproofing membrane or for proper crack control where significant hydrostatic pressure acts. The secondary benefit comes from mix design: because the same workability can be achieved at a reduced water-cement ratio, the hardened paste is inherently denser with finer, less connected porosity, which compounds the hydrophobic effect and raises compressive strength. Verified physical data are modest but consistent across sources — specific gravity typically 1.05 and chloride content nil to BS 5075 — confirming a water-based, low-density liquid admixture dosed by volume into the mix.
Where it is used
- Below-ground RCC: basement rafts, retaining walls and lift pits where damp-proofing of the mass is required
- Water-retaining structures: ground-level and overhead tanks, STP/ETP tanks, clarifiers and reservoirs
- Marine and coastal reinforced concrete exposed to splash, spray and chloride-laden environments
- Bored and precast piles, pile caps and foundation elements in high water-table zones
- Precast concrete units — pipes, segments, manhole rings and box culverts requiring low water absorption
- Manholes, inspection chambers, sumps and drainage structures in sewage and waste-water works
- Plinth beams, retaining structures and podium slabs in residential and commercial buildings across NCR
Key advantages
- Integral protection distributed through the concrete mass, so water repellency survives surface chipping, drilling or abrasion
- Chloride-free formulation safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete in corrosion-prone coastal exposures
- Bitumen- and ammonia-free system — avoids the odour, bleed and staining of traditional bituminous waterproofers
- Permits a lower water-cement ratio at equal workability, giving denser concrete and higher compressive strength
- Disperses instantly in mix water, so it integrates into normal batching with no special site equipment
- Reduces capillary water absorption, the primary driver of dampness, efflorescence and rebar corrosion
- Compatible with a layered waterproofing approach alongside membranes, crystalline products and protective coatings
Limitations & considerations
- A permeability/absorption reducer — not a positive barrier against sustained hydrostatic head; a designed membrane is still required for high-pressure water-retaining situations
- Does not bridge or heal cracks; sound crack control, joint detailing and proper compaction remain essential
- Performance depends on correct dosage, thorough mixing and good curing — under-dosing or poor workmanship erodes the benefit
- Will not compensate for honeycombing, cold joints or segregated concrete; mix design and placement discipline are prerequisites
- Always requires a trial mix to confirm dosage, workability and compatibility with the specific cement, SCMs and other admixtures used
- Liquid admixture with a finite shelf life; requires protected storage and must be re-dispersed/used within the stated period
Selection & best practice
Treat Conplast WP400 as one engineered layer in a waterproofing system, not a standalone cure. Establish the dose by a site trial mix using the actual cement, aggregates and any plasticiser/SCM combination, and add it to the gauging water or at the batching plant so it is uniformly distributed before discharge. Capitalise on the admixture by reducing the water-cement ratio to the lowest value that still gives the required workability, rather than keeping water constant — this is where the strength and durability gains are realised. Maintain rigorous compaction to eliminate honeycombing, detail construction and movement joints with a complementary system such as a waterstop or crystalline slurry, and cure thoroughly (moist curing for at least 7 days) so the hydration reactions that generate the hydrophobic phase can complete. For elements under genuine hydrostatic pressure, pair WP400 concrete with an external or sandwich membrane. Confirm the current dosage range, packaging and shelf life against the latest Fosroc technical data sheet for your region before specifying.

How we position Fosroc Conplast WP400
Within Fosroc’s own range, Conplast WP400 sits alongside Conplast WL (the popular general-purpose liquid integral waterproofer for concrete and mortar), Conplast WP200 (another hydrophobic admixture in the WP family) and Conplast Crystalline (a crystalline integral system); WP400 is the choice when structural or precast concrete needs a strong reduction in water absorption while keeping the mix chloride-free. It is most powerful as the in-mass layer of a system that also uses a Fosroc membrane (Proofex range), a crystalline slurry at joints, or a Nitoproof/Dekguard protective coating on exposed faces. Against the wider Indian market, it competes with integral waterproofing admixtures such as Sika WT-200 P / Sika-1, MBS (MYK Schomburg) admixtures, Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ and STP (Shalimar) integral compounds. Honestly assessed, no integral admixture — Fosroc or otherwise — replaces sound mix design, compaction, crack control and, where hydrostatic head is present, a dedicated membrane; the value of Conplast WP400 is a chloride-free, bitumen-free, durable reduction in capillary absorption that strengthens the overall waterproofing system. Space Arc Engineering supplies it with application guidance and can cross-recommend the complementary Fosroc products for a complete specification.
