Dekguard W
Waterproof Breathable Protective Coating for External Concrete and Masonry
Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad
Product Overview
Dekguard W is a flexible, water-based, breathable waterproof protective coating from Fosroc for the protection of external concrete, masonry, and cementitious rendered surfaces from water ingress, carbonation (the reaction of atmospheric CO2 with cement paste that gradually neutralises the alkaline environment protecting reinforcing steel), and the surface degradation caused by freeze-thaw cycling and pollution. Unlike rigid paint coatings that trap moisture within the concrete and can blister and peel, Dekguard W has a breathable formulation that allows water vapour to diffuse outward (preventing osmotic blistering and moisture build-up) while blocking the inward penetration of liquid water and CO2. This combination of waterproofing and breathability is the defining characteristic of the Dekguard range of protective coatings from Fosroc. The flexible nature of Dekguard W allows the coating to bridge hairline cracks and accommodate the micro-movement that occurs in external concrete surfaces due to thermal expansion and contraction, without the coating cracking and becoming a water ingress path. The product is available in white and pigmented colours, providing an aesthetically clean protective finish in addition to its protective function. Dekguard W is suitable for external walls of concrete frame buildings, pre-cast concrete cladding panels, bridge parapets and fascias, and any external concrete or masonry surface that requires long-term protection from the Indian monsoon, coastal environment, or polluted urban atmosphere. Space Arc Engineering distributes Dekguard W for building envelope protection, infrastructure coating, and maintenance projects across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does “breathable” mean for a concrete protective coating and why does it matter?
A breathable coating allows water vapour (in the gas phase) to diffuse through the coating film from the substrate side to the atmosphere, while blocking the penetration of liquid water from the outside. Concrete naturally contains moisture, and this moisture level fluctuates with wetting and drying cycles. If a non-breathable coating is applied to concrete, water vapour from within the concrete cannot escape and builds up pressure beneath the coating — this pressure eventually causes the coating to blister, crack, and delaminate, ending its protective function. A breathable coating like Dekguard W releases vapour while still blocking liquid water, providing long-lasting protection without blistering.
How does Dekguard W protect concrete reinforcement from corrosion?
Reinforcing steel in concrete corrodes when the passive oxide layer on the steel surface is broken down — this happens either by carbonation (CO2 reacting with the cement paste, lowering the pH below the threshold needed to maintain the passive layer) or by chloride penetration (from seawater or de-icing salts). Dekguard W slows the inward diffusion of CO2 and moisture through the concrete surface, reducing the rate of carbonation and delaying the time to depassivation. It also blocks the entry of water-borne chlorides. By extending the time before the passive layer is broken down, Dekguard W extends the corrosion-free service life of the reinforced concrete structure. It is most effective as a preventive maintenance coating applied before significant carbonation has occurred.
How many coats of Dekguard W are required and what is the coverage rate?
Dekguard W is typically applied in two coats by roller or brush, with the second coat applied after the first has dried (minimum 4 hours at 20 degrees C, longer in cooler or humid conditions). The coverage rate per coat is approximately 6 to 8 square metres per litre, depending on the porosity and texture of the substrate. Rough or porous substrates such as exposed aggregate or sand-blasted surfaces will require higher volumes per coat to achieve complete coverage. The minimum total dry film thickness for effective protection is specified in the product data sheet and must be verified by wet film thickness gauge during application.
