Fosroc Conplast SP430G8
SNF-based high range water reducing and retarding admixture (ASTM C494 Type G) for high-strength, workable concrete in hot-weather and long-haul RMC placements.
What is it?
Fosroc Conplast SP430 G8 is a high range water reducing and retarding admixture based on Sulphonated Naphthalene Polymers (SNF), supplied as a brown liquid that is instantly dispersible in water. It is classified to ASTM C494M Type G and complies with IS:9103:1999 and BS:5075 Part 3:1985.
Where is it used?
Used across Indian RMC plants, precast yards and infrastructure works — high-strength grades, flowing concrete, mass pours, hot-weather concreting and long-haul transit where both water reduction and controlled retardation are required.
Why use it?
It delivers up to 25% water reduction without loss of workability, enabling higher strengths and durability, while its retarding action extends working time and helps maintain placement quality in high-ambient-temperature Indian conditions.
How is it applied?
Dosed at 0.6 – 2% by weight of cement (optimised by site trials), added to the gauging water or run-in with the final mix water; never to dry cement. Compatible with all cements except high alumina cement, with microsilica/cement replacements and other Conplast admixtures.
About Fosroc Conplast SP430G8
Fosroc Conplast SP430 G8 is a high range water reducing and retarding concrete admixture formulated from Sulphonated Naphthalene Polymers (SNF). It is classified as an ASTM C494M-99a Type G admixture — meaning it combines high range (superplasticising) water reduction with a controlled retarding effect in a single product. Supplied as a brown liquid that is instantly dispersible in water, it complies with IS:9103:1999, BS:5075 Part 3:1985 and additionally meets IS 2645:2003 as an integral waterproofing compound.
For Indian construction, the dual high-range-plus-retarding action is the defining characteristic. The SNF chemistry disperses cement particles to release trapped water, allowing up to 25% water reduction without loss of workability — the route to lower water/cement ratios, higher compressive strengths and improved durability. At the same time, the retarding function extends the workable life of the mix, which is decisive for ready-mix concrete (RMC) facing long transit times in dense traffic, for large mass pours where cold-joint risk must be controlled, and for hot-weather concreting where ambient temperatures accelerate setting.
It is important to note what this product is — and is not. Conplast SP430 G8 is an SNF (naphthalene sulphonate) based admixture, not a polycarboxylate ether (PCE). With a specific gravity of 1.13 ± 0.02 at 27°C, nil chloride content to BS:5075 and less than 1% additional air entrained, it is engineered to boost strength and workability without compromising the air or chloride profile of structural concrete. Space Arc Engineering supplies genuine Fosroc Conplast SP430 G8 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with technical support on dosage trials and mix optimisation.
The technical insight
The performance of Conplast SP430 G8 rests on the adsorption behaviour of Sulphonated Naphthalene Polymers. The sulphonate groups adsorb onto cement grains and impart a negative surface charge, so particles electrostatically repel one another (electrostatic dispersion). This deflocculates the cement and liberates the water otherwise trapped within flocs — the mechanism behind up to 25% water reduction at equal workability, or substantially higher slump at equal water. The same surface adsorption temporarily slows the early hydration of C3A and C3S, which is what produces the Type G retarding action. Because retardation is dosage-sensitive, the 0.6 – 2% by weight of cement range must be confirmed by site trials with the actual cement, aggregates and ambient temperature — under-dosing limits water reduction, while over-dosing can extend set beyond intent, particularly in cooler conditions. Critically, dispersion (not air entrainment) drives the workability gain: less than 1% additional air is entrained, so strength is not sacrificed. Compatibility extends to all cements except high alumina cement, and to microsilica and other cement-replacement systems, supporting high-performance and durable concrete designs.
Where it is used
- High-strength and high-performance concrete grades requiring low water/cement ratios
- Ready-mix concrete (RMC) needing extended workability through long transit and placing times
- Hot-weather concreting where retardation offsets accelerated set from high ambient temperatures
- Mass and large-volume pours where controlled retardation reduces cold-joint risk
- Precast concrete production needing high early dispersion and consistent finish
- Flowing, easily-placed and easily-compacted concrete in congested reinforcement
- Infrastructure works — bridges, foundations, water-retaining and durable structures
- Microsilica and cement-replacement (SCM) mixes for enhanced durability
Key advantages
- High range water reduction of up to 25% without loss of workability, enabling higher strength and durability
- Built-in retarding action (ASTM C494 Type G) extends working time for transit, hot weather and mass pours
- SNF chemistry gives instantly dispersible, reliable performance across all cements except high alumina
- Nil chloride content to BS:5075 — safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
- Less than 1% additional air entrained, so workability gains do not cost compressive strength
- Compatible with microsilica, cement replacements and other Conplast admixtures for high-performance mixes
- Complies with IS:9103:1999, BS:5075 Part 3:1985 and ASTM C494M Type G; also meets IS 2645:2003 for integral waterproofing
- Supplied by Space Arc Engineering as genuine, authorised Fosroc stock with India-wide technical support
Limitations & considerations
- Not compatible with high alumina cement
- Dosage must be optimised by site trials — over-dosing can excessively retard set, especially in cool conditions, while under-dosing reduces water-reduction benefit
- Being an SNF-based admixture, slump-retention performance differs from polycarboxylate ether (PCE) superplasticisers; for very long workability windows a PCE-based product (e.g. Fosroc Auramix / Structuro range) may suit better
- Retarding action means early-age strength gain can be slower than with a non-retarding (Type F) plasticiser
- Must be added to the gauging water, never to dry cement
- Shelf life is a minimum of 12 months under normal temperatures; storage conditions should be observed
Selection & best practice
Always establish the optimum dosage within the 0.6 – 2% by weight of cement range through site trials using the project’s actual cement, aggregates and expected ambient temperature, rather than assuming a fixed figure. Add Conplast SP430 G8 to the gauging/mixing water — never directly to dry cement — and ensure adequate mixing for uniform dispersion. Because it is a Type G (retarding) admixture, account for the extended set when planning finishing and formwork-striking schedules, especially in cooler weather. For high-strength or durability-critical mixes, combine with microsilica or cement replacements as designed and verify cube strengths against the trial mix. Where a low water/cement ratio is targeted, exploit the full up-to-25% water reduction rather than simply increasing slump. For projects needing very long slump retention at high temperatures, consult Space Arc Engineering on whether an SNF product or a PCE-based Fosroc admixture is the better fit.
