What is it?

A single-component polyurethane (PU) adhesive-sealant from Sika that cures on contact with atmospheric moisture to form a tough, permanently elastic bead.

Where is it used?

Elastic bonding and interior joint sealing across metal fabrication, ventilation, container and sheet-metal work, and general assembly on site or in the workshop.

Why use it?

It combines genuine structural-grade adhesion with sealant flexibility on one cartridge, so a single product bonds and seals dissimilar substrates without a primer on most metals.

How is it applied?

Gun-applied straight from a 300 ml cartridge or 600 ml sausage onto clean, dry, grease-free surfaces, then tooled off within the 60-minute skin time.

About Sika Sikaflex-221

Sikaflex-221 sits in a slightly different place from the weather-sealants most contractors reach for. It is first and foremost an elastic adhesive that also happens to seal well, which is why fabricators, bus and rail builders, container makers and sheet-metal shops have leaned on it for decades. One bead does two jobs: it grips dissimilar materials like aluminium, painted steel, GRP and rigid plastics, and it stays flexible enough to absorb the small movements and vibration those assemblies see in service. Because it is a single-component product, there is no mixing, no pot life to race against and no waste from a part-used pack.

For Space Arc’s engineering and contractor customers, the appeal is versatility on a job where you would otherwise carry three products. It cures by drawing moisture from the air, skins in about an hour at 23 degrees C and builds strength over the following days into a bead you can sand and overpaint. Sika positions it as a multi-purpose sealant for interior sealing and straightforward bonding rather than a facade weather-sealant, so it is the right call for lap seams, plant and equipment, ducting and internal detailing, and the wrong call for a wide, sun-baked, dynamic expansion joint on a building envelope. Used within that brief it is one of the most dependable PU cartridges on the market.

The technical insight

The chemistry is a moisture-triggered polyurethane. The uncured paste carries reactive isocyanate groups that, once the bead is exposed to humidity in the air, react to build a cross-linked elastomer from the surface inward. That is why cure is skin-first and depth-dependent: the outside skins in roughly 60 minutes at 23 degrees C and 50 percent relative humidity, while full through-cure of a thicker bead takes several days and slows noticeably in cold, dry conditions where there is simply less airborne water to drive the reaction. The finished network reaches Shore A 40 hardness with about 500 percent elongation at break and 1.8 MPa tensile strength, so it is soft and highly extensible rather than rigid, which lets a bonded joint flex and damp vibration instead of cracking. The same PU backbone gives it adhesion across a genuinely wide substrate range and resistance to ageing, water and dilute chemicals, while keeping shrinkage on cure to around 5 percent so bead geometry stays stable.

Where it is used

  • Elastic bonding of metal panels, profiles and trims in fabrication and assembly
  • Interior joint sealing on sheet-metal, ducting and ventilation work
  • Bonding and sealing in bus, rail, container and vehicle-body construction
  • Sealing lap seams and overlaps in cladding and metal roofing detailing (interior side)
  • Assembly bonding of GRP, rigid plastics and painted or coated components
  • Sealing around penetrations, service entries and equipment bases indoors
  • General workshop bonding where a flexible, paintable seal is needed
  • Fixing and sealing of skirtings, flashings and trims onto compatible substrates

Key advantages

  • One-component: no mixing, no pot life, and part-cartridges can be recapped and reused
  • Bonds a wide range of substrates including metals, primed steel, ceramics and plastics
  • Stays permanently elastic at Shore A 40 with about 500 percent elongation to absorb movement and vibration
  • Can be sanded and overpainted once cured, giving a clean finished detail
  • Resistant to ageing, fresh and salt water, and dilute acids and alkalis
  • Non-corrosive and low-odour, so it is comfortable to use in enclosed interior spaces
  • Wide service range from -50 to +90 degrees C covers most indoor and plant conditions
  • Good non-sag behaviour holds shape in vertical and overhead joints

Limitations & considerations

  • Positioned by Sika for interior sealing and simple bonding, not for exposed facade or building-envelope weather joints
  • Movement capability is modest for a sealant; it is not a substitute for a dedicated high-movement expansion-joint sealant
  • Not resistant to organic acids, concentrated mineral acids, solvents or glycol alcohols
  • Cure slows markedly in cold, dry air because it depends on atmospheric moisture
  • Many metals bond without primer, but stress-crack-prone plastics and difficult substrates need trials and often a Sika primer
  • For professional use only; surfaces must be genuinely clean, dry and grease-free for the bond to develop

Selection & best practice

Work between 5 and 40 degrees C, with 15 to 25 degrees C ideal for both substrate and sealant. Surfaces must be clean, dry and free of grease, oil and dust; wipe difficult substrates with the appropriate Sika cleaner and, where the Pre-Treatment Chart calls for it, apply the recommended primer before you start. Confirm adhesion and compatibility with a trial on the actual substrates rather than assuming, especially on plastics prone to stress cracking. Gun the bead with a hand, pneumatic or electric piston gun, then tool and finish within the 60-minute skin time using Sika Tooling Agent N so the surface is not dragged after it has begun to skin. Design bonded joints for the movement expected and allow several days for full through-cure before loading; remember cure runs from the surface inward and slows in cold, dry conditions. Clean uncured material from tools with Sika Remover-208; once cured it can only be taken off mechanically.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sikaflex-221 an adhesive or a sealant?
Both. It is an elastic PU adhesive-sealant, so one bead bonds substrates together and seals the joint at the same time. That is its main advantage over a plain weather-sealant, and it is why fabricators use it for assembly work rather than only for gap-filling.
Can I use Sikaflex-221 on an external building expansion joint?
It is not the ideal choice. Sika positions 221 for interior sealing and simple bonding, not for exposed, high-movement facade joints. For a building-envelope movement joint you want a dedicated high-movement weather-sealant such as an MS-polymer product; 221 is better kept for bonding and interior detailing.
Do I need a primer?
On many clean metals it bonds without one, but the honest answer is to check the Sika Pre-Treatment Chart for your substrate and run an adhesion trial. Anodised aluminium, some plastics and permanently damp conditions often need the appropriate Sika primer to develop a durable bond.
How long does it take to cure?
It skins in about 60 minutes at 23 degrees C, and a bead cures from the surface inward over the following days depending on thickness, temperature and humidity. Because it needs atmospheric moisture, cure is slower in cold, dry air, so allow several days before loading a bonded joint.
Can it be painted?
Yes. Once fully cured it can be sanded and overpainted, which makes it useful where the joint has to disappear into a finished surface. As with any overcoating, test your paint system on a cured sample first for compatibility.
What pack sizes does Space Arc supply?
It is stocked in 300 ml cartridges and 600 ml sausages in the standard colours. As an authorised Sika distributor across Delhi NCR and pan-India, Space Arc can advise on colour availability, primers and the right product if your joint actually needs a facade-grade sealant instead.

How we position Sika Sikaflex-221

Within the Sika range, reach for Sikaflex-221 when you need genuine bonding strength plus sealing in one bead; step up to Sikaflex-11 FC+ for all-round construction bonding and sealing, or to a Sikaflex PRO / Sikaflex Construction-grade sealant when the joint is an exposed, higher-movement building joint rather than an assembly bond. For sanitary and interior wet-area lines use a dedicated silicone. Where a project specifies a paintable, low-odour MS-polymer movement-joint sealant instead of a PU, our Fosroc Nitoseal MS600 covers that brief and cross-sells naturally alongside 221 on the same site.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Nitoseal MS600 — Choose the Fosroc MS-polymer option when the joint is an exposed, higher-movement construction movement joint that must be weather-durable and paintable, rather than the interior bonding-and-sealing role Sikaflex-221 is built for.
