Dr. Fixit Mouldshield
A water-based anti-fungal waterproof coating that keeps damp interior walls in bathrooms, basements, hospitals and hotels free of recurring mould.
What is it?
A water-based acrylic interior wall coating carrying biocidal actives, formulated by Pidilite’s Dr. Fixit range to waterproof damp surfaces and stop mould and fungal regrowth.
Where is it used?
Bathroom and kitchen walls, basements, poorly ventilated corridors and stairwells, and hygiene-critical walls in hospitals, clinics and hotel rooms.
Why use it?
Ordinary emulsion repainted over a damp wall feeds the next mould cycle within a season; Mouldshield restricts moisture movement through the film and keeps its surface biocidally hostile to spores.
How is it applied?
Two coats by brush or roller over a substrate that has been mould-killed with dilute bleach, scrubbed and dried for 48 to 72 hours; overcoat with standard emulsion where a decorative finish is required.
About Dr. Fixit Mouldshield
Anyone maintaining buildings through an Indian monsoon knows the pattern: a bathroom ceiling or a north-facing bedroom wall develops black spotting, the painter scrapes and repaints, and by the following year the patch is back. The failure is rarely the paint itself. Conventional emulsions do nothing about the two conditions mould needs — a humid substrate and an undefended film surface. Dr. Fixit Mouldshield attacks both at once. It is a single-component, water-based coating in which a waterproof acrylic binder is charged with biocidal actives, so the cured film simultaneously slows moisture transmission through the wall face and inhibits the germination of mould, fungal and algal spores that settle on it.
The product is deliberately positioned as a functional finishing coat rather than a structural waterproofing system. Its opaque matt-white base masks old damp staining in the same operation, and the film accepts standard emulsion or distemper overcoats, so specifiers can restore a decorative finish without losing protection. Space Arc Engineering supplies Mouldshield to contractors, housing societies, facility managers and consultants across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, and our applicator teams routinely pair it with source-side repair — because a biocidal coating applied over an unresolved leak is money spent twice.
The technical insight
Mould growth on interior walls requires sustained surface moisture, spore settlement and a nutrient film — typically the binder and dirt on ordinary paint. Mouldshield interrupts this chain at two points. First, the crosslinked acrylic polymer forms a coherent, water-resistant membrane that reduces moisture vapour movement through the wall face, keeping surface humidity below the threshold at which spores germinate. Second, biocidal ingredients dispersed through the film remain active at the coating surface, so spores that do land on it fail to establish. This is why surface preparation is chemically decisive, not cosmetic: live mycelium left under the film retains its own moisture and can grow behind the coating, while a bleach-treated, fully dried substrate lets the acrylic bond directly to sound plaster and puts the biocidal reserve where the next spore generation actually lands.
Where it is used
- Bathroom and toilet walls and ceilings with persistent condensation and black spotting
- Kitchen walls around wet counters, sinks and steam-generating zones
- Basement and semi-basement interior walls with residual dampness after source repair
- Poorly ventilated corridors and stairwells in apartment and commercial buildings
- Hospital and clinic walls where fungal growth is a hygiene non-conformance
- Hotel guest rooms and washrooms in humid coastal and monsoon-affected cities
- Interior faces of shaded external walls showing recurring damp patches
- Ceilings below wet areas, as finishing protection after leak rectification
Key advantages
- Dual-action film: waterproof acrylic barrier plus biocides against mould, fungi and algae in one product
- Opaque white base hides existing damp stains without a separate stain-blocking primer
- Water-based, low-odour formulation suits occupied hospitals, hotels and homes — no evacuation needed
- Fast turnaround: touch dry in about an hour, recoatable after 4 hours at 30 °C
- Accepts standard emulsion or distemper overcoats, so decorative schemes are unaffected
- Applied by ordinary brush or roller — no specialist crew or spray equipment
- Predictable consumption at 8–10 m² per litre per coat on smooth plaster simplifies BOQ estimation
- Matt white finish can be tinted where a self-finished surface is acceptable
Limitations & considerations
- It is not a cure for active leaks, seepage or hydrostatic pressure — the moisture source must be repaired first or the film will blister and fail
- Application over live mould is a guaranteed callback: bleach treatment (1:4 dilution), scrubbing and full drying are mandatory, not optional
- Interior-grade product — it is not designed for exterior facades exposed to UV and driving rain
- The 48–72 hour substrate drying window after washing adds real programme time, especially in monsoon months
- Coverage drops noticeably on porous, textured or sand-faced plaster, so budget from a site trial rather than the smooth-plaster figure
- As a thin coating it will not bridge structural or moving cracks — treat those separately before coating
Selection & best practice
Treat preparation as half the job. Kill existing growth with a 1:4 diluted bleach solution, scrub the full affected area plus a generous margin, rinse, and then let the wall dry completely — 48 to 72 hours minimum, longer in humid weather. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection during the bleach wash and ventilate the room. Never coat a substrate that still reads damp; trapped moisture is the most common cause of early failure. Apply the first coat by brush or roller, working the material into the plaster rather than laying it on thick, and recoat after about 4 hours at 30 °C — extend this in cool or humid conditions. Two coats are the system; a single coat leaves pinhole paths for moisture. Where a decorative colour is required, overcoat with standard emulsion only after the second coat has dried through. On large contracts, run a one-wall trial patch first to confirm actual coverage and adhesion on your specific plaster.

Industry use cases
Healthcare
Hospitals and clinics use Mouldshield on ward, washroom and utility-corridor walls where visible fungal growth is an infection-control and audit failure; the low-odour water-based film allows work in occupied wings.
Hospitality
Hotels in humid and coastal markets specify it for guest bathrooms and the wall zones behind wardrobes and AC units, where condensation quietly breeds the black spotting that drives negative reviews.
Residential
Housing societies and homeowners apply it during redecoration of bathrooms, kitchens and basement rooms so the fresh paint cycle is not undone by the first monsoon.
Commercial and institutional
Offices, schools and retail buildings coat stairwells, basements and poorly ventilated service corridors where routine repainting had become an annual expense.
Facility management
FM contractors on annual maintenance contracts use it to close out recurring mould complaints permanently instead of logging the same ticket every season.

How we position Dr. Fixit Mouldshield
Mouldshield is the finishing-line defence in the Dr. Fixit internal-protection family — the right choice when the moisture source is controlled and the battle is condensation and recurring mould. When the wall itself is transmitting damp, pair it correctly: Dr. Fixit Dampguard Classic (epoxy-based) handles negative-side dampness on internal walls and ceilings, Dr. Fixit Pidifin 2K provides cementitious waterproofing under tiles in bathrooms and wet areas, and Dr. Fixit Raincoat protects the exterior face of walls against rain-driven ingress with its own anti-algal properties. For projects needing heavier-duty protective coatings on exposed concrete, Space Arc also supplies Fosroc Dekguard-series coatings and Sika protective systems. Our technical team helps you diagnose whether the problem is condensation, seepage or rising damp before you buy — because the correct product for each is different, and we would rather specify once than sell twice.
