Fosroc Solvent 102
A purpose-built solvent blend for thinning and cleaning the epoxy and polyurethane resin systems used across the Fosroc range – far more effective on construction-chemical resins than generic xylene, white spirit or naphtha.
What is it?
A specially developed solvent blend formulated to dissolve, thin and clean the epoxy, polyurethane and other industrial resins commonly found in Fosroc construction-chemical products.
Where is it used?
On site wherever epoxy or PU systems are mixed and applied – flooring bays, coating jobs, repair mortars and grouting works – for thinning material and for cleaning tools, mixing containers and substrates.
Why use it?
It is engineered specifically for construction resins, so it cuts and removes them far more effectively than petrol, xylene, white spirit or heavy-naphtha, while keeping application viscosity and tool life under control.
How is it applied?
Poured into a container to soak and clean tools, applied directly or by cloth/paper to clean substrates, or added to a Fosroc product at the thinner ratio stated in that product’s datasheet.
About Fosroc Solvent 102
Fosroc Solvent 102 is an auxiliary solvent blend rather than a structural product – but on a busy epoxy or polyurethane job it is one of the most quietly important items in the kit. Fosroc developed it specifically to work with the resins that run through its own range of coatings, floor toppings, repair mortars and grouts, and the company is explicit that it is “much more effective than common solvents such as petrol, xylene, white spirit, heavy-naphtha, etc.” That distinction matters in practice: generic thinners may dilute a resin, but they often do so unevenly, leave residues, flash off at the wrong rate, or fail to fully strip a partly-cured film from a roller or trowel. Solvent 102 is tuned to the chemistry of the binders Fosroc actually uses. The product does two jobs. First, it is a thinner – added in small, controlled doses to a Fosroc epoxy or PU material to adjust its viscosity so it brushes, rolls or sprays correctly, particularly useful in the cooler months across North India when resins thicken. Second, and more commonly on Indian sites, it is a cleaner: for soaking and washing out brushes, rollers, trowels, squeegees, mixing buckets and spray equipment before the resin sets hard, and for wiping resin spatter or contamination off a substrate. It is a clear, mobile liquid with a specific gravity of about 0.9 and a flash point of 33C, which makes it a flammable material that must be handled with the same care as any low-flash solvent. Space Arc Engineering supplies Fosroc Solvent 102 in its standard 5 litre can to applicators, flooring contractors and waterproofing teams across Delhi NCR and on a Pan-India basis as an authorised Fosroc distributor, typically alongside the epoxy and PU systems it is meant to service.
The technical insight
The value of Solvent 102 lies in solvency matched to resin chemistry and in an evaporation profile suited to thinning. A solvent blend works because different resins (bisphenol-A epoxies, polyurethane prepolymers, novolac systems) need different solvent polarities and boiling-point fractions to dissolve cleanly without shocking the resin or leaving a tacky residue; a single generic solvent like xylene rarely hits that balance. The 33C flash point is the single most important number to design site practice around – it sits below typical North-Indian summer ambient temperatures, so vapour can form a flammable atmosphere in an unventilated room, near a generator, or close to hot-work. The specific gravity near 0.9 (UK safety data for this grade quotes 0.86-0.88) confirms it is lighter than water, so it will float and spread on standing water rather than sink, which affects spill response. A critical discipline: when thinning, the dose is never a free choice – it is fixed by the host product’s own datasheet, because over-thinning an epoxy floor coating dilutes the binder, reduces film build, can cause sagging on verticals, and may compromise the cured chemical and abrasion resistance the floor was specified for. As a cleaning solvent it has no cured film of its own, so coverage and shelf-life are governed by how fast it is consumed and how well the can is resealed against evaporation.
Where it is used
- Thinning Fosroc epoxy and polyurethane coatings, primers and floor toppings to the correct application viscosity, strictly at the ratio given in the host product’s datasheet
- Cleaning brushes, rollers, trowels, squeegees and notched spreaders immediately after applying resin systems, before the resin gels
- Washing out mixing buckets, drums and static/dynamic mixer paddles between batches
- Flushing and cleaning airless spray equipment, lines and tips used for solvent-based epoxy or PU coatings
- Wiping resin spatter, drips or surface contamination off a prepared concrete or steel substrate before overcoating
- Degreasing and preparing tool surfaces so the next batch of resin adheres and releases cleanly
- Removing uncured Fosroc resin from skirtings, frames and adjacent finishes during corrective work
Key advantages
- Formulated specifically for the epoxy and PU resins in the Fosroc range, so it dissolves and removes them more effectively than petrol, xylene, white spirit or heavy-naphtha
- Performs a dual role as both a thinner and a tool/substrate cleaner, reducing the number of consumables a crew must carry
- Helps extend the working life of expensive brushes, rollers, trowels and spray gear by cleaning resin off before it cures hard
- Allows viscosity to be corrected on site, which is valuable in cold-weather application when resins thicken
- Clear, mobile liquid that penetrates and flushes equipment readily
- Backed by a published Fosroc technical and safety datasheet, so handling and dosing are documented rather than guesswork
- Convenient 5 litre can sizing suited to per-job consumption and easy site storage
Limitations & considerations
- Flammable – flash point of just 33C means vapours can ignite at normal Indian site temperatures; it demands ventilation, no naked flames and no smoking
- It is a cleaning and thinning aid, not a coating, adhesive or repair material – it has no standalone film, strength or waterproofing function
- Over-thinning a Fosroc product with it dilutes the binder and can reduce film build, sag resistance and cured chemical/abrasion performance, so the datasheet ratio must be respected
- Direct skin contact is to be avoided; it can degrease and irritate skin, so gloves and PPE are required
- Solvent-based, so it carries the usual VOC and odour considerations and is unsuitable for poorly ventilated enclosed spaces without extraction
- Not intended for thinning water-based Fosroc products or systems where a specific dedicated thinner is mandated
- Must be kept tightly closed in its original container to prevent evaporation and contamination, and stored away from ignition sources
Selection & best practice
Always confirm the correct thinner from the host product’s datasheet before adding Solvent 102, and never exceed the stated thinning ratio – when in doubt, thin in small increments and consult the Fosroc technical line. Treat it as a flammable liquid at all times: store and use away from naked flames, sparks, hot-work and generators, keep the area well ventilated (especially indoors and in summer when ambient temperature is already near the 33C flash point), and keep a suitable fire extinguisher nearby. Wear chemical-resistant gloves, eye protection and suitable clothing, and avoid skin contact. For cleaning, decant a working quantity into a dedicated container, soak and agitate tools promptly before the resin gels, then wipe down – cleaning is dramatically easier on uncured resin than on a hardened film. Keep the can tightly resealed immediately after use to limit evaporation and contamination, store it in a cool, shaded, well-ventilated place away from oxidisers and ignition sources, and manage solvent-soaked rags and spent solvent as flammable hazardous waste per local norms rather than tipping them into drains.

How we position Fosroc Solvent 102
Fosroc Solvent 102 is best understood as a companion product rather than a competitor to anything – it exists to service Fosroc’s resin systems such as the Nitoflor epoxy/PU flooring range, Nitoprime and Nitomortar epoxy primers and mortars, and Nitocote/Dekguard protective coatings, and it is most effective when used with those. Where a Fosroc product carries its own dedicated thinner or cleaner, that should take precedence for thinning. Functionally equivalent solvent thinners/cleaners exist across the market – for example Sika offers Colma Cleaner and dedicated thinners for its Sikafloor and Sikagard resin systems, and MBCC/Master Builders Solutions (formerly BASF MBS) supplies thinners and cleaning solvents for its MasterTop and MasterSeal lines. For job-mixed cartridge and tooling work, brands like Dr. Fixit and STP (Pidilite) and various Sika equipment cleaners are used in Indian practice. The practical rule is consistency: match the cleaning/thinning solvent to the resin family and manufacturer you are actually applying, follow that product’s datasheet, and do not mix systems. Space Arc Engineering advises pairing Solvent 102 with the Fosroc epoxy and PU products it supports, and can recommend the correct thinner or cleaner for any specific Fosroc system on request.
