Product Overview

Dr. Fixit Tilemaster is a polymer-modified cementitious tile adhesive manufactured by Pidilite Industries for the fixing of ceramic, vitrified porcelain, and natural stone tiles (marble, granite, slate, and sandstone) on concrete, masonry, and cement render substrates in floor and wall tile installation applications. Tile adhesive is the contemporary standard for tile fixing in urban Indian construction, replacing the traditional mud-bed and cement slurry method (3 to 4-inch thick sand-cement screed plus neat cement over-coat) that was dominant in Indian residential construction until the late 1990s. The thin-bed tile adhesive method (using Dr. Fixit Tilemaster at 4 to 6 mm thickness) provides several advantages over the traditional thick mortar bed: faster installation (no waiting for thick screed to cure before tiling), lower floor-build-up height (saving 60 to 80 mm of floor-to-ceiling height compared to traditional bed), reduced dead weight on floor structure (important for renovation of existing buildings), and superior and verifiable bond strength compared to the traditional cement slurry method (where bond depends heavily on the skill and freshness of the slurry applied by the mason). Dr. Fixit Tilemaster contains Portland cement, graded silica aggregate, and proprietary polymer modifiers that provide the critical tile adhesive performance properties: sufficient open time (15 to 20 minutes) to allow adjustment of tiles after laying; non-sag performance on vertical wall applications; good wetting of the tile back face to ensure complete coverage (greater than 85 percent back coverage per EN 1347 requirements); and bond strength to both the concrete/masonry substrate and the tile back face sufficient to resist the shear forces from thermal cycling and foot traffic. Dr. Fixit Tilemaster is available in standard grade (for ceramic and polished vitrified tiles up to 60 x 60 cm) and extended open time grades for large-format tiles (60 x 60 cm and above), and is suitable for both floor and wall applications. Space Arc Engineering supplies Dr. Fixit Tilemaster for tile contractors, building finishing contractors, and renovation specialists throughout Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Uttar Pradesh.

Applications

  • Floor tile fixing — ceramic, vitrified, and natural stone tiles on concrete floor slab substrate
  • Wall tile fixing — bathroom, kitchen, and exterior wall ceramic and vitrified tiles on cement render
  • Large-format vitrified tile installation — 60 x 60 cm to 120 x 120 cm tiles on prepared substrate
  • Natural stone floor fixing — marble, granite, slate, and sandstone on concrete substrate
  • External terrace tile fixing — exterior-grade adhesive for outdoor vitrified tile installation
  • Swimming pool tile fixing — water-resistant grade for pool wall and floor mosaic or tile installation

Key Advantages

  • Polymer-modified — higher bond strength and flexibility versus plain cement slurry tile fixing
  • Non-sag — suitable for vertical wall tile installation without tile slipping
  • Long open time — 15 to 20 minutes working time allows adjustment of large tiles after laying
  • Complete tile back coverage — polymer wetting improves contact between adhesive and tile back
  • Consistent quality — factory-mixed powder ensures uniform polymer content in every bag
  • Thin-bed application — 4 to 6 mm thickness saves floor height and reduces dead weight versus thick bed

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does tile de-bonding (hollow tiles or loose tiles) commonly occur in Indian residential buildings even when tile adhesive has been used, and what is the correct method to prevent this during installation?

Tile de-bonding is one of the most common post-construction defects in Indian residential and commercial buildings, and it occurs even when branded tile adhesive has been used if the installation method is incorrect. Understanding the root causes helps tile contractors and building owners specify and supervise correct installation practice. The most common causes of tile de-bonding using tile adhesive in Indian construction are as follows. Cause 1 — Insufficient adhesive back coverage. Correct tile installation requires greater than 85 percent contact area between the tile adhesive bed and the tile back face. This is achieved by applying the adhesive to the substrate using the correct notched trowel (a 6 to 8 mm V-notch trowel for standard tiles, an 8 to 10 mm square-notch trowel for large-format tiles) and additionally back-buttering the tile (applying a thin skim coat of tile adhesive to the tile back face with a flat trowel). In Indian site practice, back-buttering is frequently omitted, and the notched trowel bed alone provides only 60 to 70 percent contact — insufficient for long-term adhesion under thermal cycling. Prevention: Always back-butter floor tiles and large-format wall tiles before pressing them into the notched trowel adhesive bed. Cause 2 — Exceeding the open time. The tile adhesive skin over on the substrate surface within the open time (15 to 20 minutes at 23 degrees C — but as little as 7 to 10 minutes at 38 to 40 degrees C in Indian summer). If tiles are pressed onto a skinned-over adhesive surface, the tile bonds to the polymer skin rather than to the fresh adhesive, resulting in very low bond strength and eventual de-bonding. Prevention: In hot summer conditions, mix smaller batches, apply adhesive in smaller sections, and test open time by pressing a tile into the adhesive bed — if the tile can be pulled away cleanly (adhesive has not transferred to the tile back), the surface has skinned over and the adhesive must be removed and a fresh application made. Cause 3 — Wet substrate. Applying tile adhesive over a damp or wet substrate (wet screed, freshly flooded bathroom floor) causes the water in the substrate to migrate into the adhesive and alter the water-cement ratio, reducing bond strength. Prevention: Ensure the substrate is clean and dry before tile adhesive application. For bathroom floors and wet areas, apply tile adhesive over a fully cured waterproofing membrane (Dr. Fixit Pidifin 2K or Dr. Fixit 201 Acrylic) rather than directly onto the concrete or screed. Cause 4 — Substrate not clean. Laitance, dust, oil, curing compound residue, or paint on the substrate surface prevents adhesion of the tile adhesive. Prevention: Mechanically prepare the substrate by wire brushing, grinding, or grit blasting to remove laitance and contamination before tile adhesive application. For glazed or painted substrates, mechanical scarification is essential. Cause 5 — No perimeter movement joints. Large tiled areas installed without perimeter movement joints at walls and intermediate movement joints (every 4 to 5 metres in each direction) develop thermal expansion stress that causes compressive failure at the centre of the tile field, pushing tiles upward (tent-cracking). Prevention: Install silicone-filled movement joints at all room perimeters and at intervals of 4 to 5 metres in large open-plan areas per the joint spacing requirements in IS 13630.
