What is it?

A two-component (resin plus amine hardener), 100 percent solids pigmented epoxy coating from MC-Bauchemie, engineered as an anti-carbonation and protective film for concrete and industrial floors.

Where is it used?

RCC columns, beams, soffits and facades; bridge substructures; retaining walls; basement and parking-structure faces; and as a seal coat over industrial floors across Delhi NCR and Pan-India projects.

Why use it?

It builds a dense, low-permeability barrier that slows carbon-dioxide ingress into concrete, protecting embedded reinforcement while adding an abrasion-resistant, colour-fast finish in a single product.

How is it applied?

Mix component A and B in the stated ratio, apply by brush, roller or airless spray onto sound, primed concrete in two coats, respecting pot life and the inter-coat overcoat window.

About MC-Bauchemie MC-Color 2K

MC-Color 2K sits in MC-Bauchemie’s surface-protection family as the rigid, high-build option for teams that need both durability and a defined colour on exposed concrete. It is a two-part system: an epoxy resin base and an amine hardener that are combined on site immediately before use. Because it carries no solvent and cures at essentially 100 percent solids, almost the entire wet film stays on the substrate as protective material, so there is minimal shrinkage and no solvent odour to manage on enclosed sites such as basements, plant rooms and parking decks.

The coating is aimed at the recurring problem Indian structures face: carbonation. Atmospheric carbon dioxide slowly reacts with the alkaline pore water in concrete, dropping its pH and eventually stripping reinforcement of its natural passive protection, which is where corrosion and spalling begin. MC-Color 2K is formulated so its cured film behaves like a substantial extra layer of concrete cover against that CO2 diffusion, in line with the EN 1504-2 principle of surface protection. For engineers and consultants specifying repair-and-protect schemes, it is the coat that goes on after the concrete has been reinstated, locking in the repair and extending the service life of the element.

The technical insight

The protection is a physics story, not a cosmetic one. Carbonation-induced corrosion depends on carbon dioxide reaching the steel; the rate at which that happens is governed by how easily CO2 can diffuse through whatever covers the concrete. MC-Color 2K works by placing a dense, cross-linked epoxy film in that diffusion path. Once components A and B react, the amine hardener cross-links the epoxy into a tightly packed network with very few continuous pores, so gas molecules have to take a long, tortuous route to get through. This resistance is expressed as an equivalent air-layer thickness, the CO2 sd value: a two-coat MC-Color 2K system is designed to present roughly 50 to 150 metres of equivalent still-air resistance, which is the same as burying the steel under many additional millimetres of good concrete. Because the film is solvent-free and applied at a controlled dry film thickness of about 0.25 to 0.35 mm per coat, that barrier is continuous and consistent rather than patchy. The trade-off, honestly stated, is rigidity: the cured film is hard and abrasion-resistant, which is ideal on stable, sound concrete, but it does not stretch to bridge cracks that open and close, so crack-active surfaces need a different tool.

Where it is used

  • Anti-carbonation protection of exposed RCC columns, beams and slab soffits
  • Protective topcoat over reinstated areas in concrete repair and rehabilitation schemes
  • Seal and wear coat on industrial and warehouse floors
  • External-face coating of retaining walls and basement structures
  • Protection of bridge soffits, piers and other substructure elements
  • Internal-face coating of multi-storey and basement parking structures
  • Coloured protective finish on building facades and precast concrete elements
  • Barrier coat on water-retaining and effluent-exposed concrete where a rigid film is acceptable

Key advantages

  • Solvent-free, 100 percent solids formulation with effectively zero VOC, suited to enclosed and poorly ventilated areas
  • Strong barrier to carbon-dioxide diffusion, protecting reinforcement from carbonation-driven corrosion
  • Consistent with the EN 1504-2 approach to concrete surface protection
  • Hard, abrasion-resistant film that doubles as a wearing seal coat on floors
  • Available in a wide range of RAL and NCS shades for a durable coloured finish
  • Bonds well to correctly prepared concrete and to compatible repair mortars
  • Gloss to semi-gloss surface that is easy to clean and resists dirt pick-up
  • Minimal film shrinkage on cure because almost no material is lost as solvent

Limitations & considerations

  • Rigid film; it does not bridge live or moving cracks, so crack-active surfaces need an elastomeric coating instead
  • Two-component product with a short pot life of roughly 30 to 45 minutes at 25 degrees C, so mixed material must be used promptly
  • Requires sound, clean, dry and adequately cured concrete plus correct priming; it will not compensate for poor surface preparation
  • Amine-cured epoxies can chalk and lose gloss under prolonged direct UV, so a UV-stable topcoat may be needed where long-term appearance matters
  • Application and cure are temperature and humidity sensitive; low temperatures slow cure and high humidity or damp substrates risk poor adhesion
  • The inter-coat overcoat window must be respected, as coating too late compromises chemical bonding between coats

Selection & best practice

Success with MC-Color 2K is decided at the substrate. The concrete must be structurally sound, clean, free of laitance, oil and old coatings, and adequately cured and dry; mechanical preparation such as grit blasting or grinding gives the best key, followed by a compatible primer. Any repairs should be completed and cured first. Mix the full quantities of component A and B in the specified ratio using a slow-speed mixer until uniform, and only mix what the team can apply within the 30 to 45 minute pot life at typical site temperatures. Apply two coats by brush, roller or airless spray at the recommended 0.3 to 0.5 kg per square metre per coat to build the target dry film thickness, and respect the overcoat window, generally 12 to 18 hours minimum and up to 36 to 48 hours at 25 degrees C, so the coats bond chemically. Avoid application onto damp substrates, in poor ventilation without controls, or when temperatures are too low for proper cure, and allow the full cure before the surface is exposed to traffic or chemicals.

Frequently asked questions

Is MC-Color 2K a waterproofing membrane or an anti-carbonation coating?
It is primarily a protective anti-carbonation coating. Its main job is to slow carbon-dioxide ingress and protect reinforcement, while also giving a tough, water-resistant coloured film. It is not a crack-bridging or below-grade tanking membrane.
Can it bridge cracks in the concrete?
No. MC-Color 2K cures to a rigid, hard film that protects sound, stable concrete. If the surface has live cracks that open and close, you need a flexible elastomeric coating instead, such as Fosroc Dekguard Elastic.
What coverage and thickness should we plan for?
Budget roughly 0.3 to 0.5 kg per square metre per coat, giving about 0.25 to 0.35 mm dry film per coat, applied in two coats. Actual usage rises on rough or porous substrates, so allow for surface profile.
How much working time do we get after mixing?
Pot life is about 30 to 45 minutes at 25 degrees C. Mix only what your team can apply in that window; heat shortens it further, so mix in smaller batches during Indian summers.
Does it need a primer and surface preparation?
Yes. The concrete must be sound, clean, dry and adequately cured, mechanically prepared and primed with a compatible primer. Skipping preparation is the most common cause of adhesion failure.
Is it safe to use in enclosed basements and parking areas?
It is solvent-free with effectively zero VOC, which makes it far more suitable for enclosed and poorly ventilated spaces than solvent-borne coatings. Standard ventilation and PPE for epoxy handling still apply during mixing and application.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC-Color 2K

MC-Color 2K is the rigid, high-build anti-carbonation coat in MC-Bauchemie’s surface-protection range; where a client wants a transparent, breathable water-repellent instead of a pigmented film, look to MC-Bauchemie’s MC-Color Proof line, and for elastic, crack-bridging protection of weather-exposed facades their MC-Color Flex family is the better fit. On industrial floors, pair it with MC-Bauchemie’s MC-DUR epoxy flooring build-ups. Because Space Arc also distributes and applies Fosroc, we will cross-recommend where the Fosroc option genuinely suits the substrate: Dekguard Elastic when cracks must be bridged, or the silane-siloxane Dekguard S when a penetrating, invisible hydrophobic treatment is preferred over a film. We specify honestly on substrate condition, not brand loyalty.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Dekguard Elastic — Choose the Fosroc option when the concrete has live or moving cracks, as its elastomeric film bridges cracks up to 6 mm whereas the rigid MC-Color 2K epoxy cannot.
