What is it?

A normal water-reducing admixture (plasticiser) based on lignosulphonate salts, classified IS 9103 Type A, used to make general-purpose concrete more workable or stronger without extra cement.

Where is it used?

Foundations, columns, beams, slabs, block-work mortar, water-retaining structures and standard precast elements in the C15 to C30 grade band.

Why use it?

It shaves 5-12% off mixing water at the same slump, so you either gain compressive strength and durability or place a wetter, easier mix — at a very low cost per cubic metre.

How is it applied?

Dosed at roughly 0.2-0.5% by weight of cement, added to the gauging water before it goes into the mixer, then batched normally with site trials to fix the exact rate.

About MC-Bauchemie MC Centrament Plast

MC Centrament Plast sits in the workhorse tier of MC-Bauchemie’s admixture range — the plasticiser you reach for when the concrete is ordinary structural grade and the priority is a reliable water reduction at sensible cost, not the extreme flow of a polycarboxylate superplasticiser. Its active chemistry is lignosulphonate, a salt recovered from the lignin left over in paper-pulp manufacture. In the mix, these molecules coat the cement grains and set up an electrostatic charge that keeps particles from clumping together. The cement disperses more evenly, less water is trapped between flocs, and the same slump is reached with noticeably less water in the batch.

For an engineer or ready-mix producer, that single effect opens up two ways to work. Hold the water constant and the concrete simply flows better, which helps around congested reinforcement or a long pump line. Or take the water reduction and keep workability the same — the lower water-cement ratio tightens the pore structure, so you pick up compressive strength and durability without adding a bag of cement. Because it carries an IS 9103 Type A classification, it slots cleanly into any mix designed under IS 456, which is why it remains a standard specification on general building and infrastructure work. Space Arc supplies Centrament Plast as an authorised distributor and can advise on trial dosages, compatibility and site handling.

The technical insight

The mechanism is deflocculation by electrostatic repulsion. When cement first meets water, the grains carry patchy surface charges and pull together into loose flocs that trap pockets of water — water that then does no useful work on flow. Lignosulphonate molecules adsorb onto the cement surfaces and impose a uniform negative charge, so neighbouring grains repel rather than attract. The flocs break apart, the trapped water is released back into the mix, and the paste behaves as if more water were present than actually is. That freed water is what you either keep (better workability) or design out (lower w/c ratio). A mild, useful side-effect of lignosulphonate is a short delay to early hydration — usually tens of minutes — which is why the same product helps hold a slump longer in hot weather. It is a Type A normal water reducer, not an accelerator; if the retardation matters more than the plasticising, a purpose-made water-reducing-and-retarding grade is the better call.

Where it is used

  • Reinforced structural concrete — foundations, footings, columns, beams and suspended slabs in the C15-C30 band
  • Ready-mixed concrete where a modest, economical water reduction is specified across large volumes
  • Masonry and concrete block-work mortars needing improved workability and cohesion
  • Water-retaining and drainage structures at C20-C25 where a denser, less permeable matrix matters
  • Standard precast yard production of non-critical elements such as kerbs, panels and covers
  • Hot-weather placements where the mild set delay keeps concrete workable through transit and handling
  • Mass and general civil concrete on cost-sensitive projects that still need IS 9103 compliance
  • Pumped concrete on congested pours, using the freed water as extra flow rather than strength

Key advantages

  • Carries IS 9103 Type A classification, so it is directly acceptable in any mix designed to IS 456
  • Delivers a 5-12% water reduction at target slump — real strength and durability gain with no extra cement
  • Very low admixture cost per cubic metre, which suits high-volume and budget-driven work
  • Mild set retardation extends the workability window, a genuine help in Indian summer conditions
  • Compatible with the common Indian cements — OPC 43, OPC 53, PPC and PSC
  • Simple to batch: added to the mixing water, no special dispensing equipment needed
  • Improves cohesion and reduces bleeding and segregation in leaner general-purpose mixes
  • Lignosulphonate base is well understood and forgiving, giving consistent, predictable results on site

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a normal (Type A) water reducer, not a high-range superplasticiser — for C35 and above, or very low w/c self-compacting mixes, a PCE-based product is the right tool
  • Water reduction tops out around 12%; do not expect the 20-30% that polycarboxylate superplasticisers deliver
  • Overdosing beyond about 0.5% by cement weight can excessively retard the set, leaving concrete soft well past the normal window
  • The built-in set delay may be unwelcome in cold weather or where fast early strength and quick form-stripping are needed
  • Not suitable with calcium aluminate or gypsum-free cements — check binder compatibility before use
  • Performance still depends on a sound mix design; it improves concrete, it does not rescue a poor one, and site trials are essential

Selection & best practice

Always establish the dosage by trial mix rather than assuming a figure — start near the lower end of the 0.2-0.5% by cement weight range and adjust to the slump and strength you need. Add Centrament Plast to the gauging water before that water enters the mixer; never tip it dry onto aggregate or cement, and never pour it neat onto dry material, as uneven dispersion causes local retardation and inconsistent results. Keep the total water within the design w/c ratio so the admixture’s benefit shows up as strength, not just extra slump. Watch for the tell-tale sign of overdosing — concrete still soft eight to ten hours after placing — and dial the rate back if you see it. In hot weather, use the mild retardation to your advantage on longer hauls, but re-check set times as ambient conditions change through the day. Store the drums sealed, out of direct sun and above freezing, and stir if the liquid has stood for a long period.

Used in tanks, channels and drainage structures at C20-C25 to produce a denser, lower-permeability concrete that resists water ingress better.

Precast Yards

Standard precast elements — kerbs, covers, panels — benefit from the improved workability and cohesion, easing compaction and surface finish.

General Civil Works

Roads-adjacent civil concrete, mass pours and boundary structures on budget-conscious government and private jobs where IS 9103 compliance is mandatory.

Frequently asked questions

Is MC Centrament Plast a superplasticiser?
No. It is a normal water-reducing admixture — an IS 9103 Type A plasticiser — giving 5-12% water reduction. For high-range reduction of 20% or more, or for C35+ and self-compacting mixes, you need a polycarboxylate (PCE) superplasticiser instead.
What dosage should I use?
As a guide, 0.2-0.5% by weight of cement, which is roughly 1.0-2.5 litres per 100 kg of cement. The right figure depends on your cement and mix, so always confirm it with a site trial rather than fixing it on paper.
Will it delay my concrete setting?
It gives a mild, useful set retardation that helps hold workability in hot weather. That only becomes a problem if you overdose past about 0.5% by cement weight — then the set can stretch out and the concrete stays soft too long.
Which cements is it compatible with?
It works with the common Indian cements — OPC 43, OPC 53, PPC and PSC. It should not be used with calcium aluminate cements or gypsum-free cements; check the binder before batching.
How do I add it to the mix?
Add it to the gauging water before that water goes into the mixer. Never pour it dry onto cement or aggregate, and never add it neat to dry material, as poor dispersion causes patchy retardation and uneven results.
Does it make concrete stronger?
Indirectly, yes. If you take the water reduction and keep workability the same, the lower water-cement ratio tightens the pore structure, which raises compressive strength and durability — without adding more cement. If you instead keep the water constant, you get easier placing rather than added strength.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC Centrament Plast

Centrament Plast is the everyday plasticiser in the range; when a project moves to C35 and above, or needs the high flow of a low water-cement self-compacting mix, step up within the MC-Bauchemie family to a polycarboxylate-based grade such as the Centrament Flow / MC-PowerFlow superplasticisers rather than pushing this Type A product past its limits. Where a longer working time is the real need on hot-weather or long-haul ready-mix, a dedicated water-reducing-and-retarding admixture is a better fit than over-dosing Centrament Plast. Space Arc also stocks equivalents across other brands — Fosroc’s Conplast plasticiser line and Sika’s Plastiment range — so specifiers tied to a particular approved-vendor list can be matched to a comparable IS 9103 Type A product. For related concrete work we can pair it with MC-Bauchemie’s integral waterproofing and curing products from the same admixtures and additives family.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Conplast P211 — Choose the Fosroc option when the project’s approved-vendor list specifies Fosroc, or when a chloride-free lignosulphonate plasticiser is mandated for prestressed and reinforced concrete — Conplast P211 is the directly equivalent IS 9103 Type A water reducer.
