Fosroc Conbextra EP160
Extended-working-time epoxy grout for heavy static and dynamic machine foundations, deep gaps and large pours in hot Indian site conditions.
What is it?
A three-component, solvent-free epoxy resin grout (base + hardener + graded aggregate filler) engineered for free-flow placement under heavily loaded base plates. The EP160 grade is the extended-pot-life, large-volume member of Fosroc’s Conbextra EP family, intended for deep gaps and high ambient temperatures where standard epoxy grouts would gel too quickly.
Where is it used?
Critical machine and turbine base plates, reciprocating and rotating equipment foundations, heavy crane and transporter rails, and chemically aggressive environments such as refineries, steelworks, chemical plants and electroplating works.
Why use it?
Combines non-shrink behaviour, high compressive/tensile/flexural strength and excellent dynamic-load and chemical resistance with a longer working window, so large or deep pours can be completed in one operation even in Indian summer temperatures.
How is it applied?
Whole-pack mixed on site in the correct supplied proportions, then poured to a continuous hydrostatic head into leak-proof formwork to fill the bolt pockets and base-plate gap in a single pour, with no vibration required.
About Fosroc Conbextra EP160
Fosroc Conbextra EP160 is a high-strength epoxy grout from the Conbextra range, the same family that includes the well-known EP10, EP75 and EP300 grades. It is supplied as a complete three-component system — a clear epoxy base resin, a liquid hardener and a pre-weighed bag of specially graded inert filler — proportioned for whole-pack mixing so that the cured grout reliably develops its rated performance without site batching errors. Once combined, the material flows freely and self-levels, filling the void beneath a machine base plate and surrounding the holding-down bolts to give full, intimate surface-to-surface contact.
What sets the EP160 grade apart within the family is its formulation for extended working time and large-volume, deep-section pours. Conventional epoxy grouts are exothermic, and in the heat of a Delhi NCR or coastal Indian summer a fast-setting grout can gel before a big pour is finished, or generate excessive internal heat in a thick section. EP160 is positioned by Fosroc precisely for “situations where extended working time and large volume applications, deep gaps or high ambient temperatures are required” — making it the practical choice when a single base plate needs a substantial, uninterrupted placement.
Because it is epoxy rather than cementitious, EP160 brings chemical resistance and dynamic-load durability that cementitious grouts such as Conbextra GP or HF cannot match. It resists repetitive vibration, creeps very little under sustained load, and withstands a wide range of chemicals — qualities that matter under compressors, forging hammers, high-speed turbines and equipment in aggressive process plants. For Indian EPC contractors, OEMs and consultants specifying precision grouting, it occupies the role of the “hot-weather, big-pour” epoxy grout in the toolkit.
Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Conbextra EP160 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, serving Delhi NCR and project sites across India.
The technical insight
The number in the Conbextra EP grade names broadly tracks the maximum recommended pour depth or gap the formulation is designed to fill in one lift — EP10 handles thin gaps from about 0.25 mm, EP75 deeper sections, and EP300 up to roughly 300 mm. EP160 sits in the upper-middle of this range, which is why its formulation prioritises a longer pot life and controlled exotherm: a deeper, larger pour stores more reaction heat, so a slower, cooler-running resin chemistry is essential to avoid thermal cracking and premature gelling. As with every epoxy grout, pot life is strongly temperature-dependent and shortens sharply as ambient temperature rises (Fosroc’s EP-range data shows working time roughly halving for each significant temperature step), so for Indian conditions the grout, substrate and even the aggregate should be conditioned toward the cooler end of the working range before placement.
Where it is used
- Grouting base plates of reciprocating and rotating machinery — compressors, pumps, generators and large motors
- Bedding of high-speed turbines, centrifuges and testing equipment subject to dynamic and vibratory loads
- Foundations for drop forges, forging hammers and presses where impact loading is severe
- Support grouting under heavy crane rails and transporter / gantry rails
- Deep-section and large-volume single pours that exceed the depth limit of standard epoxy grouts
- Precision grouting in chemically aggressive plants — refineries, steelworks, fertiliser and chemical units, electroplating works
- Hot-weather machine grouting where ambient temperatures would gel a standard-pot-life epoxy grout too quickly
Key advantages
- Extended working time allows large or deep pours to be completed in a single, uninterrupted operation
- Controlled exotherm suits thick sections and high ambient temperatures, reducing thermal-cracking risk
- Non-shrink — ensures complete surface-to-surface contact, full bond and resistance to penetration of deleterious substances
- High compressive, tensile and flexural strengths give excellent durability and long service life
- Resistant to repetitive dynamic and vibratory loads with low creep under sustained loading
- Free-flowing and self-levelling — fills bolt pockets and tight gaps without vibration
- Withstands a wide range of chemicals, suiting aggressive industrial environments
- Whole-pack, pre-proportioned mixing removes site batching errors and ensures consistent performance
- Early strength gain enables faster commissioning and reduced plant downtime
Limitations & considerations
- Epoxy grouts cost significantly more than cementitious grouts (e.g. Conbextra GP/HF), so reserve EP160 for genuinely heavy-duty, dynamic or chemically aggressive duties
- Pot life is highly temperature-sensitive and shortens rapidly in heat — placement must be planned and materials conditioned accordingly
- Three-component, whole-pack system: partial-pack mixing is not recommended and disrupts the cure
- Limited resistance to prolonged UV / direct sunlight exposure; intended for embedded, under-plate use rather than exposed decorative surfaces
- Substrate and steel must be clean, dry, sound and free of oil, grease and laitance — surface preparation is critical to bond
- Strong solvent odour and the usual epoxy skin/eye precautions during mixing and pouring; adequate ventilation and PPE required
- Exotherm in very large single masses still needs control — extremely deep pours may require layered placement or technical guidance from Fosroc / Space Arc
Selection & best practice
Plan EP160 pours for the cooler part of the day in Indian summers and condition the base resin, hardener and filler toward 20-25°C before mixing to maximise the working window. Prepare the concrete to a sound, dry, mechanically roughened surface free of oil, grease and laitance, and blow bolt pockets clean of dust and water. Build leak-proof formwork sealed with foam strip or mastic, keeping the unrestrained grout surface to a minimum, with a generous pouring-side gap and a feeding hopper to maintain a hydrostatic head so the free-flow grout fills the void in one continuous direction without trapping air. Mix the whole pack mechanically (base + hardener first, then the graded filler) and pour promptly from one side only. For exceptionally deep or massive single sections, confirm the safe maximum lift with Fosroc/Space Arc technical support to manage exotherm, and protect the cured grout edges until commissioning.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra EP160
Within Fosroc’s own range, Conbextra EP160 is the extended-working-time, large-volume epoxy grout that bridges the gap between the shallower-gap Conbextra EP75 and the very-deep-gap Conbextra EP300, while EP10 covers thin gaps and crack injection; for non-dynamic, general-purpose work the cementitious Conbextra GP, GP2 or HF grades are the lower-cost alternatives, and Conbextra EPR / EPGP serve related free-flow epoxy duties. Against competitors active in India, credible equivalents include Sika’s SikaGrout epoxy grouts and Sikadur range, MBS (MYK / BASF-lineage) MasterFlow epoxy grouts, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) industrial grouting products, and STP (Shalimar) epoxy grouting systems. Specifiers usually choose EP160 specifically when a single deep or large pour, hot-weather working window, dynamic loading and chemical resistance must all be satisfied together — duties where a cementitious grout is inadequate and a standard-pot-life epoxy grout would set too soon. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, can advise on the correct grade selection and supply genuine Fosroc material with applicator support.
