What is it?

A factory-blended, ready-to-use dry-powder cementitious grout that mixes into a thixotropic (non-sag) paste, compensates for shrinkage and develops high early and ultimate compressive strength. It is chloride-free and not an epoxy system.

Where is it used?

Bridge and structural bearings, crane and gantry rails, prefabricated bridge board seals, repairs to precast elements, and machine or bolt anchorages where the gap is inclined, tapered or partly open and a free-flowing grout would simply run out.

Why use it?

Its thixotropic body lets it stay in place on slopes and in formwork-light situations while still reaching load-bearing strength in a few hours, cutting downtime on bridges, ports and industrial plant where traffic or production must resume quickly.

How is it applied?

Gauge the powder with clean water in a forced-action or slow-speed drill mixer to a smooth, trowel-stiff or pourable consistency as required, then place by trowel, pump or pour into a clean, saturated-surface-dry pocket, working it firmly against the contact face before it stiffens.

About Fosroc Conbextra HRT

Fosroc Conbextra HRT belongs to the Conbextra family of cementitious grouts, the range Indian contractors have relied on for decades to seat baseplates, fill ducts and lock down anchors. What sets HRT apart from the free-flowing members of that family, such as Conbextra GP or HF, is its thixotropic rheology. Rather than self-levelling like a liquid, the mixed grout behaves like a stiff, shape-holding paste that resists slumping and running. That single property changes where the grout can be used: tapered bearing shelves, sloping crane-rail seats, the curved seals beneath precast bridge board units and partially confined anchor pockets, all situations where a conventional pourable grout would escape the gap before it set.

The product is supplied as a single-component dry powder in moisture-resistant bags. The cement, graded fine aggregates, an expansive (shrinkage-compensating) system and performance additives are pre-blended at the factory, so the contractor only adds clean water on site. This pre-batching removes the variability of hand-mixing cement, sand and admixtures, which matters on infrastructure work where a consultant or third-party agency audits grout quality. As a cementitious product it bonds well to concrete and steel, tolerates a wide range of placing temperatures and, importantly for structures exposed to de-icing salts or coastal air, is formulated chloride-free so it does not introduce chlorides that could promote reinforcement or anchor-bolt corrosion.

The other half of the HRT story is speed. The grout is designed to reach a usable, load-carrying strength within a few hours of placing, then continue to gain strength to a high ultimate value over the normal cure period. On a bridge bearing replacement carried out under a traffic-possession window, or a crane rail re-seated during a short plant shutdown, this early strength is the deciding factor: it lets the structure or machine be commissioned the same shift rather than days later. Space Arc Engineering positions Conbextra HRT for exactly these high-value, time-critical jobs across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, where the cost of extended downtime far outweighs any difference in material price between a standard and a thixotropic high-early-strength grout.

The technical insight

The engineering trade-off behind Conbextra HRT is rheology versus flow. A self-levelling grout achieves intimate contact under a baseplate by gravity, but it needs near-full confinement to stay put. HRT instead carries a thixotropic, shrinkage-compensated body: at rest it holds shape on a slope, yet when worked under shear (trowelling, pumping or rodding) it becomes mobile enough to fill the contact zone, then re-stiffens. This is why it suits inclined bearing seats and board seals that a fluid grout cannot serve. Two consequences follow for site teams. First, intimate contact is achieved by physical compaction, not by gravity flow, so the grout must be worked firmly against the load-bearing face and the substrate brought to a saturated-surface-dry condition beforehand. Second, because the material is dense (fresh wet density of the order of 2.3 kg/l) and gains strength fast, water dosage discipline is critical: over-watering to make placing easier directly sacrifices the high early strength that is the product’s entire reason for selection. The shrinkage-compensating (expansive) system offsets plastic and early drying shrinkage so the hardened grout maintains positive contact and full bearing area under the seated component rather than pulling away from it.

Where it is used

  • Seating and re-seating of bridge and structural elastomeric/pot bearings on inclined or tapered pedestals
  • Grouting of crane rails, gantry rails and rail soleplates in ports, steel plants and heavy industry
  • Filling and sealing of prefabricated bridge board seals and joint pockets
  • Structural repairs to precast concrete elements where a non-sag, high-strength patch is needed
  • Anchoring of holding-down bolts, dowels and starter bars in pockets that are open, sloped or only partly confined
  • Fast-turnaround machine baseplate grouting where production must restart within the same shift
  • Infrastructure works near coastal or de-icing-salt environments requiring a chloride-free grout

Key advantages

  • Thixotropic, non-sag consistency holds the grout in place on inclined, tapered and partly open gaps where free-flowing grouts run out
  • High early strength allows commissioning within hours, minimising traffic possessions and plant downtime
  • High ultimate strength gives durable, load-bearing support under bearings, rails and anchors
  • Shrinkage-compensated formulation maintains positive contact and full effective bearing area
  • Chloride-free, so it does not introduce chlorides that could corrode reinforcement or anchor bolts
  • Factory pre-blended dry powder, needing only site-added clean water, for consistent, auditable quality
  • Workable across a wide ambient temperature range, suiting Indian summer and winter site conditions
  • Iron-free cementitious base avoids the staining and oxide expansion associated with metallic-aggregate grouts

Limitations & considerations

  • Thixotropic body must be physically worked or compacted against the contact face; it does not self-level like Conbextra GP or HF, so it is the wrong choice for deep, fully confined, flow-only baseplate gaps
  • Strict water dosage is essential, as over-watering to ease placing sharply reduces the high early strength that justifies the product
  • Being cementitious, it is not a substitute for an epoxy grout (e.g. Conbextra EP range) where high chemical resistance, dynamic fatigue loading or very thin precision shimming is required
  • Requires a clean, sound, saturated-surface-dry substrate; placing onto dry or laitance-covered concrete compromises bond
  • Application thickness per layer is limited; very deep pockets may need placing in lifts or aggregate extension as per the current TDS
  • Rapid stiffening shortens working time, so mixing quantities must be matched to the rate of placing, especially in hot weather

Selection & best practice

Confirm the exact mixing water, layer-thickness limits and strength figures against the current local Fosroc TDS for your country before batching, since Conbextra grout values differ by region and revision. Saw-cut or break out to sound concrete, remove all laitance and oil, and pre-soak the pocket so the substrate is saturated-surface-dry with no free standing water at the moment of placing. Mix only the quantity you can place before the grout stiffens, using the lowest water dosage that still allows full compaction, and add the powder to the water (not the reverse) under continuous mechanical mixing. Work the grout firmly against the load-bearing face by trowel or rodding to expel air and achieve intimate contact, then trim and immediately cure the exposed edges with Fosroc Concure curing membrane or wet hessian to prevent rapid surface drying. For deep or large-volume pours, follow the TDS guidance on placing in lifts or extending with graded aggregate.

Frequently asked questions

Is Conbextra HRT a cementitious or an epoxy grout?
It is a cementitious grout — a factory-blended Portland-cement-based dry powder that you gauge with clean water on site. It is not an epoxy system. Where you need high chemical resistance or dynamic fatigue performance, look instead at Fosroc’s epoxy Conbextra EP range.
How is HRT different from Conbextra GP or HF?
Conbextra GP and HF are free-flowing, self-levelling grouts that fill confined baseplate gaps by gravity. HRT is thixotropic (non-sag): it holds its shape on inclined or partly open gaps such as bearing shelves, crane-rail seats and board seals, and it is engineered for high early strength. Choose GP/HF for deep, fully confined flow-grouting; choose HRT where the grout must stay put on a slope or set fast.
How quickly can the structure be loaded?
HRT is formulated to reach a usable, load-bearing strength within a few hours of placing, then continue to high ultimate strength. The exact strength-versus-age figures depend on temperature, water dosage and the current TDS, so confirm the specific MPa values with Space Arc for your project before committing to a re-opening time.
What pack size does it come in and how much water do I add?
It is supplied as a pre-weighed dry powder in bags. The precise bag weight and the litres of water per bag are set on the current Fosroc TDS and should be followed exactly — over-watering to ease placing will sharply reduce the early strength. Contact Space Arc for the current pack size and mixing data for your region.
Can HRT be used for anchoring bolts and bars?
Yes. It suits anchorages that require high strength in a few hours, particularly pockets that are open, sloped or only partly confined where a fluid grout would drain away. For very deep or large-volume pockets, place in lifts or extend with graded aggregate per the TDS.
Is it suitable for coastal or de-icing-salt exposure?
HRT is chloride-free, so it does not add chlorides that could accelerate corrosion of reinforcement or anchor bolts, making it appropriate for marine, coastal and de-icing environments. As with any cementitious grout, overall durability still depends on correct cover, curing and substrate preparation.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra HRT

Within the Fosroc grout range, Conbextra HRT occupies the niche between the free-flowing precision grouts and the epoxy systems. If your gap is deep and fully confined and you want gravity flow, Conbextra GP or Conbextra HF (and the higher-performance HF Plus) are the natural choices; HRT is what you reach for when the grout has to hold its shape on a slope or open joint and still gain strength fast. Conbextra HR is the closely related non-fluid high-strength member of the family, while for severe chemical exposure or dynamic machinery loads you would step up to an epoxy grout such as the Conbextra EP series. Substrate preparation and curing pair naturally with Fosroc’s own ancillaries — Concure curing membranes and, for bonded repair interfaces, the Nitobond range. Among credible alternatives available in India, Sika offers comparable thixotropic and high-strength cementitious grouts in its SikaGrout line, MBS (MYK/MBS Greenline) and BASF/Master Builders Solutions market MasterFlow grouts, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) supplies cementitious grouting products, and STP carries grout and anchoring options. The honest position: HRT is a specialist, not an all-rounder. For routine self-levelling baseplate grouting a free-flow product is simpler and cheaper; HRT earns its place precisely on inclined bearings, crane rails, board seals and fast-anchor work where shape-holding and high early strength together decide the outcome.
