What is it?

A pre-packed, shrinkage-compensated cementitious grout/bedding mortar in a distinctive black colour, reinforced with polypropylene fibres and engineered for very high early strength. ‘HRBK’ denotes the ‘HR Black’ grade in the Conbextra family.

Where is it used?

Bridge and structural bearing pads, crane rail and rail-track bedding, precast/prefabricated element seating and joint sealing, and anchorages where the structure must carry load within hours.

Why use it?

It develops roughly 30 N/mm2 in 2 hours and ~100 N/mm2 at 28 days while compensating for shrinkage and resisting plastic settlement — letting crews reopen lanes or re-stress equipment the same shift instead of waiting days.

How is it applied?

Mixed with a controlled volume of clean water to a flowable consistency, then poured continuously from one side under the baseplate or into the bearing recess to expel air, and cured against drying.

About Fosroc Conbextra HRBK-12

Fosroc Conbextra HRBK-12 — catalogued by Fosroc as Conbextra HR Black — is a high-performance member of the Conbextra grouting range, formulated specifically for situations where waiting overnight for strength is not an option. It is supplied as a ready-to-use dry powder based on Portland cement, carefully graded fillers and a chemical expansion system. On site you add only clean water; the pre-batched powder removes the variability that comes from site-blended sand-cement grouts.

Two things set HRBK-12 apart from a general-purpose grout such as Conbextra GP. First, its black pigmentation, which suits exposed bedding joints, bearing plinths and architectural situations where a grey grout line would look unfinished. Second — and more importantly for the structural engineer — its rapid strength gain. The expansion mechanism counteracts settlement and drying shrinkage in the plastic and early hardened state, so the grout stays in positive contact with the underside of the baseplate or bearing rather than pulling away and leaving voids. Embedded polypropylene fibres further reduce the micro-distortion caused by plastic settlement and improve resistance to freeze-thaw cycling.

Because it is chloride-free and contains no added iron, HRBK-12 will not initiate corrosion of embedded steel or stain adjacent concrete and stonework — a meaningful detail on bridge decks, rail corridors and visible plinths. For contractors and consultants in India, it occupies a clear niche: the job that has to bear traffic, re-stress a crane rail, or open to a precast erection sequence the same day it is grouted.

The technical insight

The defining property is the strength-versus-time curve. Fosroc publishes compressive strengths of the order of 30 N/mm2 at 2 hours, 70 N/mm2 at 1 day and 100 N/mm2 at 28 days, with a fresh wet density around 2.3 kg/litre. The practical consequence is that the bearing or baseplate can be loaded or returned to traffic in roughly an hour — a window that ordinary 28-day-rated grouts cannot offer. Engineers should treat the 2-hour figure as the load-release trigger and design the grout pour temperature and water dosage to protect it, because under-mixing or excess water will blunt early strength sharply. The shrinkage-compensation system works in two phases: a controlled gaseous/expansive action in the plastic state to fill the gap, complemented by chemically driven expansion as the matrix hardens, keeping the effective bearing area in full contact. The polypropylene fibre is not structural reinforcement in the rebar sense; its role is to bridge plastic-settlement micro-cracks and improve thaw durability. As with all flowable cementitious grouts, performance is consistency-sensitive: stay within the manufacturer’s flowable water band, mix mechanically, and pour in one continuous direction so entrained air is driven out ahead of the grout front.

Where it is used

  • Bedding and re-bedding of bridge and structural bearings where load must be carried within hours
  • Crane rail and gantry rail bedding on heavy-industry and port structures
  • Seating and joint sealing of precast / prefabricated bridge and building elements
  • Rapid anchoring of holding-down bolts, dowels and starter bars requiring early strength
  • Black-coloured plinth and base-plate grouting where appearance of the joint matters
  • Repairs and pour-backs on trafficked surfaces that need to reopen the same shift
  • High-temperature-exposed grouting situations within the HR family’s rated range

Key advantages

  • Very high early strength — order of 30 N/mm2 at 2 hours — allows traffic/loading in about an hour
  • Shrinkage-compensated in both plastic and hardened states, maintaining full bearing contact
  • Polypropylene-fibre reinforced, reducing plastic-settlement distortion and improving freeze-thaw resistance
  • Chloride-free and iron-free, so it neither corrodes embedded steel nor stains adjacent surfaces
  • Distinctive black finish suited to exposed bearing and plinth joints
  • Pre-packed dry powder — add only clean water, eliminating site batching variation
  • High ultimate strength (~100 N/mm2 at 28 days) and good abrasion/atmospheric resistance

Limitations & considerations

  • Strength and flow are highly sensitive to water dosage — over-watering severely cuts early strength
  • Rapid early set shortens working time; placement must be planned and mixing kept continuous
  • Black pigment is purpose-specific; not the right choice where a colour-neutral or pourable structural grout (e.g. Conbextra GP/HF) is specified
  • As a cementitious grout it needs proper curing protection against rapid drying, especially in hot Indian site conditions
  • Single-pour gap thickness, yield per bag and exact flow band must be confirmed against the current local Fosroc TDS for the supplied grade
  • Not an epoxy grout — for chemically aggressive or very high dynamic-fatigue duty an epoxy grout (e.g. Conbextra EP series) may be more appropriate

Selection & best practice

Confirm the gap geometry and required single-pour thickness against the current Conbextra HR Black / HRBK-12 TDS before mobilising, and treat the published 2-hour strength as the load-release point. Prepare and prime the substrate (clean, sound, pre-saturated to a saturated-surface-dry condition), set leak-tight formwork with a head box on the pour side, and mechanically mix using only the specified clean-water dosage — never eyeball the water. Pour continuously from one side so air escapes ahead of the grout front, never from opposite sides simultaneously. In Delhi NCR summer conditions, control grout and substrate temperature, work in the cooler part of the day where possible, and cure with wet hessian or a curing membrane immediately after placement to protect early strength.

Industry use cases

Bridges & Highways

Bedding and re-bedding of elastomeric and pot bearings on flyovers and ROBs where a lane or carriageway must reopen to traffic the same shift rather than after an overnight cure.

Ports & Heavy Industry

Crane rail and gantry rail bedding where continuous operations leave only a short maintenance window for the rail to be re-set and re-loaded.

Precast / Prefabricated Construction

Seating and joint sealing of precast bridge boards and building elements during a tight erection sequence, keeping the crane cycle moving.

Rail & Metro Infrastructure

Rapid anchoring and bedding tasks in rail corridors where chloride-free, non-staining grout is required near reinforcement and track furniture.

Plant & Equipment Foundations

Fast holding-down bolt anchoring and base-plate grouting on equipment that must be commissioned quickly, where the black finish also suits the exposed plinth.

Frequently asked questions

What does ‘Conbextra HRBK-12’ actually refer to?
HRBK is Fosroc’s designation for Conbextra HR Black — the high-early-strength, black-pigmented grade of the Conbextra family. It is a shrinkage-compensated, polypropylene-fibre-reinforced cementitious grout. Always cross-check the exact grade suffix and pack data against the current local Fosroc technical data sheet for your supply.
Is HRBK-12 a cementitious or an epoxy grout?
It is cementitious — a blend of Portland cement, graded fillers, an expansion system and polypropylene fibres, mixed on site with clean water. It is not an epoxy grout. For chemically aggressive exposure or very high dynamic-fatigue duty, an epoxy grout such as the Conbextra EP range may be more suitable.
How quickly can the structure carry load after grouting?
HRBK-12 is built for speed — it develops on the order of 30 N/mm2 in about 2 hours, which typically allows traffic or loading within roughly an hour to that early window. Use the published 2-hour compressive strength as your load-release trigger and never accelerate the schedule beyond what the TDS supports.
Why is it black, and does that affect performance?
The black pigmentation is for appearance — it suits exposed bearing joints, plinths and architectural bedding lines where a grey grout would look unfinished. It does not compromise the structural performance. If colour is irrelevant and you simply need a pourable structural grout, Conbextra GP or HF are the usual choices.
How is it different from Conbextra GP or HF?
Conbextra GP is a general-purpose non-shrink grout and HF is a high-flow precision grout for larger gaps, both grey and both 28-day-strength oriented. HRBK-12’s differentiators are its black colour, fibre reinforcement and rapid early strength for same-shift load release — it is a specialist, not a general substitute.
Does Space Arc Engineering supply HRBK-12 in Delhi NCR and Pan-India?
Yes. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, Space Arc Engineering supplies Conbextra HRBK-12 and the wider Conbextra grouting range across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with application guidance, current TDS and method-statement support for your specific bearing or anchoring detail.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra HRBK-12

Within the Fosroc Conbextra family, HRBK-12 (HR Black) is the specialist you reach for when speed and a black finish both matter — distinct from the everyday Conbextra GP (general-purpose non-shrink grout), Conbextra HF / HF Plus (high-flow precision grouts for larger gaps and machine bases) and Conbextra HS (high-strength flowable grout). For purely structural, colour-neutral pours those grouts are usually the better-value choice; for chemically aggressive or high-fatigue duty, an epoxy grout such as the Conbextra EP series is the step up. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives in the rapid/early-strength and non-shrink grout space include Sika’s SikaGrout high-early-strength grades, MYK Schomburg / MBS (Asmaco) grout systems, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) grouting products and STP construction-chemical grouts. The honest positioning: HRBK-12 earns its place where you genuinely need a black, fibre-reinforced grout that releases load within the hour — for any other duty, a comparison against those alternatives on yield, flow band and price is worthwhile. Space Arc Engineering can specify the right Conbextra grade for the actual detail rather than defaulting to the fastest one.
