What is it?

A ready-to-use, pre-bagged cementitious grout that mixes with clean water into a flowable, non-shrink fill for gaps of 6 to 100 mm. It is chloride-free and uses a controlled expansion system to compensate for plastic-state settlement.

Where is it used?

Under machine foundation and equipment base plates, in anchor-bolt pockets and holding-down fixings, for filling and repairing cavities, and for bedding steel structures, crane rails and rail-sector bridge bearing sections.

Why use it?

It eliminates shrinkage voids under load-bearing plates, develops high early and ultimate compressive strength for fast return to service, and protects embedded steel because it carries no chloride or metallic iron.

How is it applied?

The substrate is cleaned and pre-soaked, leak-proof formwork is set, the powder is machine-mixed with the specified water, and the grout is poured continuously from one side to maintain a flowing head until the gap is full.

About Fosroc Conbextra GPE

Fosroc Conbextra GPE is a general-purpose, non-shrink cementitious grout supplied as a factory-blended dry powder of Portland cement, graded fillers and chemical additives. When a controlled quantity of clean water is added on site, it produces a free-flowing, self-compacting grout that completely fills the void between a base plate and its substrate without bleeding or segregating. The defining feature of the GPE designation within the wider Conbextra family is its broad gap-filling window of 6 mm to 100 mm in a single product, which lets one material cover both thin bedding layers and deeper foundation pours.

For contractors, structural consultants and plant engineers across India, the appeal of Conbextra GPE is dependability under static and dynamic load. A grout that shrinks as it cures leaves gaps and high-spot contact under a machine base, concentrating stress and inviting vibration, rocking and eventual bolt fatigue. Conbextra GPE counters this with a controlled gaseous expansion system that produces a slight positive volume change while the grout is still plastic, holding the grout in firm, full-area contact with the underside of the plate. Because the formulation is chloride-free and contains no metallic iron, it neither corrodes the holding-down bolts and base plate nor causes rust staining on exposed faces – an important consideration for external foundations and humid coastal sites.

The product sits in the middle of the Fosroc grouting range. It is more capable than a basic bedding mortar yet does not carry the cost or specialised handling of an epoxy grout such as Conbextra EP10 or the high-flow precision of the metallic-aggregate Conbextra range. For the large majority of equipment-setting, anchoring and structural bedding work on Indian sites, it is the practical default: easy to batch from a bag, forgiving to place, and backed by recognised strength and durability test data.

The technical insight

Conbextra GPE works on two principles that distinguish a true non-shrink grout from an ordinary sand-cement mix. First, water demand is deliberately kept low – the Conbextra general-purpose system is designed around a water-to-powder ratio of roughly 0.18 at flowable consistency. Low free water means a denser matrix, lower permeability and higher early strength, which is why these grouts reach load-bearing capacity quickly. Second, a gaseous expansion system generates a small, controlled volume increase during the plastic stage (the Conbextra GP family develops expansion of the order of 1 to 2% and an expansion window that starts at around 15-20 minutes and finishes within about 1.5 to 2 hours). That expansion is timed to act while the grout can still flow, so it pushes the material into full contact with the plate before it sets, rather than cracking a hardened body. The result is continuous, gap-free bearing.

The practical engineering consequence is that effective bearing area is maximised and point-loading is avoided, which matters most under reciprocating and rotating plant where any voiding accelerates fatigue. The 6-100 mm range is the other key technical point: at the thin end the grout must remain flowable enough to travel under a tight plate, and at the deep end it must not generate excessive heat or shrink – the graded filler package is what allows a single formulation to do both. On Indian sites the controlling variable is temperature; in summer the open and working time shortens, so cool mixing water and prompt, continuous pouring become essential to retain flow across the full pour.

Where it is used

  • Grouting under machine and equipment foundation base plates to give full, void-free bearing
  • Bedding of stanchion and column base plates on structural steel frames
  • Fixing and anchoring of holding-down bolts, anchor bolts, dowels and starter bars in pockets
  • Bedding of crane rails and steel structures subject to dynamic and rolling loads
  • Bedding of bridge bearing sections, particularly in the rail sector
  • Filling and repairing cavities, voids and gaps in concrete elements
  • Setting of pumps, compressors, generators, turbines and other vibrating plant
  • Grouting in gap thicknesses anywhere from 6 mm thin bedding up to 100 mm deep pours

Key advantages

  • Non-shrink: controlled gaseous expansion compensates for plastic settlement and keeps full contact under the plate
  • Wide 6-100 mm gap range covered by a single product, simplifying procurement and site stock
  • High early strength allows fast return to service and early removal of formwork
  • High ultimate compressive strength with low permeability for long-term durability
  • Chloride-free and free of metallic iron, so it does not corrode bolts or stain exposed faces
  • Non-bleeding and non-segregating, giving uniform strength across the full pour
  • Good flow and self-compacting behaviour for placement under tight plates and around congested anchors
  • Factory pre-blended powder removes site batching variation – just add measured clean water
  • Suitable for both internal and external applications

Limitations & considerations

  • Cementitious, not epoxy – for aggressive chemical exposure, oil-soaked bases or very high dynamic fatigue, an epoxy grout such as Conbextra EP10 is more appropriate
  • Performance depends on the correct water:powder ratio; over-watering causes bleeding, segregation and a marked loss of strength
  • Requires substrate pre-soaking and removal of standing water before pouring, or the grout will lose water to a dry base
  • Working and flow time shorten significantly in hot Indian summer conditions, demanding cool water and continuous placement
  • Single continuous pours should not exceed roughly 100 mm depth in one lift; deeper sections need aggregate extension or staged pours per Fosroc guidance
  • Should be cured and protected against rapid drying, wind and direct sun to avoid plastic shrinkage cracking
  • Not a free-standing structural concrete – it is a bedding and anchoring grout designed to act in confinement under a plate or in a pocket

Selection & best practice

Clean the substrate back to a sound base, removing oil, grease and laitance, and blow out all bolt holes and pockets. Pre-soak the cleaned concrete for at least a couple of hours and remove every trace of free standing water immediately before pouring. Build leak-proof formwork with a generous pouring head on one side and a tight gap on the far side so air can vent ahead of the grout. Always machine-mix the full bag with the exact measured quantity of clean water – never judge by eye and never re-temper with extra water to recover flow. Pour continuously from one side only, in a single direction, to push air out and avoid trapping voids; do not let the grout column break. Keep total lift within the rated 6-100 mm range, and in hot weather use chilled mixing water and place early in the day. Cure the exposed grout faces against rapid drying with wet hessian or a curing membrane. Use the Fosroc Technical Data Sheet for the exact India water addition, yield and strength figures, since values vary slightly between regional formulations.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Conbextra GPE an epoxy or a cementitious grout?
It is a cementitious grout – a factory-blended powder of Portland cement, graded fillers and chemical additives that you mix with clean water on site. It is not an epoxy system. For chemically aggressive, oil-contaminated or very high-fatigue duty, an epoxy grout such as Fosroc Conbextra EP10 is the better choice.
What gap thickness can Conbextra GPE fill?
Conbextra GPE is rated for gaps from 6 mm up to 100 mm in a single product, according to the official Fosroc product data. For sections deeper than the rated maximum, follow Fosroc guidance on aggregate extension or staged pours.
Why is a non-shrink grout important under a machine base?
An ordinary cement mix shrinks as it cures, leaving voids and high-spot contact under the plate. That concentrates load, allows the machine to rock and accelerates anchor-bolt fatigue under vibration. Conbextra GPE uses a controlled expansion system that keeps the grout in full, gap-free contact with the underside of the plate.
How much water do I add per bag?
The Conbextra general-purpose system is designed around a water-to-powder ratio of about 0.18 at flowable consistency, but you should always use the exact water quantity printed on the current Fosroc Conbextra GPE Technical Data Sheet for your region and never add extra water to recover flow, as over-watering causes bleeding and a serious loss of strength.
Does Conbextra GPE corrode anchor bolts or stain concrete?
No. It is chloride-free and contains no metallic iron, so it does not corrode embedded steel and will not cause rust staining on exposed grout faces. This makes it suitable for external and humid-environment foundations as well as internal work.
What strength does it reach?
As a general-purpose non-shrink cementitious grout, the Conbextra system typically develops around 26 N/mm2 at 1 day, about 55 N/mm2 at 7 days and roughly 65-75 N/mm2 at 28 days at the recommended consistency. Treat these as indicative family values and confirm the exact GPE figures against the current Fosroc TDS for your project.

How we position Fosroc Conbextra GPE

Within the Fosroc grouting range, Conbextra GPE is the broad-window, general-purpose non-shrink cementitious grout, covering 6-100 mm in one product. It sits alongside relatives such as Conbextra GP and the precision-grade Conbextra GP2, and below the epoxy grouts like Conbextra EP10 that are reserved for chemically aggressive or high-fatigue duty; for very deep or heavily loaded foundations the high-flow Conbextra HF and aggregate-extended options are worth comparing. Choose GPE when you want one dependable cementitious grout for routine machine bases, anchoring, crane rails and bridge bearing bedding. Among credible alternatives on the Indian market, Sika offers SikaGrout non-shrink cementitious grouts, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) supplies Pidigrout / Roff grouting products, MYK Arment / MBS markets comparable cementitious grouts, and STP supplies its own grouting range. These are valid substitutes, but as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator Space Arc Engineering recommends Conbextra GPE where a proven Fosroc system and matched technical support are specified – and we can cross-supply the right product across the Conbextra family to suit the exact gap, load and exposure of your project.
