What is it?

A dark brown, chloride-free liquid admixture based on lignosulphonates that integrally waterproofs concrete and cement-sand mortar by reducing water demand and producing a denser, less permeable matrix. It conforms to IS:2645-2003 and is the product formerly sold under this code, now branded Conplast WL.

Where is it used?

Roof slabs and screeds, basements, retaining and bund walls, water tanks, sumps, drains, bathroom and balcony floors, external plaster and general mass concrete across Delhi NCR and pan-India RMC and site-batched work.

Why use it?

It waterproofs the full body of the concrete rather than just the surface, lowers water demand for the same workability, reduces porosity and honeycombing, and gives a single dosing step that integrates into normal batching without changing the construction sequence.

How is it applied?

Dosed at 125-200 ml per 50 kg of cement, stirred into the first or second bucket of gauging water, then added to the mix; further water is adjusted to target workability. At maximum dosage, reduce water by at least 15% to preserve strength.

About Fosroc Conplast X421IC

Fosroc Conplast X421IC is an integral waterproofing liquid admixture engineered to reduce the permeability of concrete and cement-sand mortar at the point of mixing, so the waterproofing benefit is distributed uniformly through the entire matrix rather than being confined to a coating. Manufactured by Fosroc Chemicals (India) Pvt. Ltd. and supplied across Delhi NCR and the rest of India by Space Arc Engineering as an authorised distributor, it is the product many specifiers still call by its original code; Fosroc has since rebranded the same chemistry as Conplast WL.

Chemically it is a dark brown liquid based on lignosulphonates. Lignosulphonates are well-established water-reducing and dispersing agents, and that is precisely how this admixture delivers waterproofing: it improves the quality of the concrete itself. By dispersing the cement particles more effectively, it lets the mix reach a target workability at a lower water-cement ratio. Because excess mix water is the single largest contributor to capillary porosity and bleed channels in hardened concrete, cutting that water demand directly cuts the pathways through which water can later penetrate. The result is a denser, more homogeneous concrete with markedly lower permeability.

The product is positioned for what Fosroc terms critical applications, where ingress of moisture would be a durability or serviceability problem: roof slabs and screeds exposed to monsoon rain, below-grade basements subject to hydrostatic pressure, water-retaining structures such as tanks and sumps, and wet internal areas like bathrooms. It is equally at home in general mass concrete where harsh aggregates or difficult compaction raise the risk of porosity. It conforms to IS:2645-2003, the Indian Standard for integral cement waterproofing compounds, and is chloride-free, which makes it suitable for reinforced concrete where chloride-induced corrosion of steel is a concern.

It is important to understand what this admixture is and is not. It is not a surface membrane, a crystalline slurry, or a crack-bridging coating. It reduces the inherent permeability of sound, well-compacted concrete, and it works best as one disciplined layer within a complete waterproofing strategy that also addresses construction joints, cover to reinforcement, curing and, where movement or hydrostatic head is significant, an external membrane.

The technical insight

The mechanism is water reduction, not pore-blocking. As a lignosulphonate plasticiser, Conplast X421IC adsorbs onto cement grains and deflocculates them, freeing trapped water and reducing the water needed for a given slump. Fosroc states water savings of up to 15% or more at the upper dosage. Lowering the water-cement ratio shrinks the capillary pore network that forms as excess water evaporates, which is the direct cause of the measured drop in permeability to less than 15% of a control sample against the 50% maximum allowed under IS:2645-2003. The corollary is operational discipline: if you take the maximum 200 ml dosage but do not actually reduce the water, you forfeit most of the permeability and strength benefit. Fosroc explicitly instructs that at maximum dosage at least 15% of the water be removed to avoid loss of strength, and that once the water content for a batch is fixed it be kept constant across subsequent batches, correcting only for changes in sand and aggregate moisture. Because the active is a retarding-class lignosulphonate, the data sheet reports no significant effect on setting time at recommended dosage, but over-dosing can cause retardation and bleeding, so site trials to fix the optimum dosage are not optional. Note the High Alumina Cement exclusion: lignosulphonate dispersants are validated for OPC, PPC and other Portland-based and pozzolanic cements, not HAC, whose distinct hydration chemistry falls outside the product’s compatibility envelope.

Where it is used

  • Roof slabs and screeds where monsoon-driven rain demands low-permeability concrete and mortar
  • Basement raft, wall and retaining structures subject to ground moisture and hydrostatic pressure
  • Water-retaining structures such as overhead and underground tanks, sumps, swimming pools and bund walls
  • Wet internal areas including bathroom floors, balcony slabs and service ducts
  • External cement-sand plaster on facades exposed to wind-driven rain
  • General mass concrete where harsh aggregates or difficult compaction raise the risk of porosity and honeycombing
  • Drains, channels and water-conveyance structures requiring durable, dense concrete

Key advantages

  • Integral, full-body waterproofing: disperses through the entire mix for uniform permeability reduction rather than a surface-only effect
  • Permeability to water reduced to less than 15% of a control sample, against the 50% maximum allowed under IS:2645-2003
  • Acts as a water reducer, cutting water demand by up to 15% or more and improving compaction even with harsh sands and aggregates
  • Chloride-free (Nil chloride per IS:2645-2003), making it suitable for reinforced concrete
  • No significant effect on setting time at recommended dosage; maintains or improves compressive strength when water-reduction potential is used
  • Liquid form gives instant, complete dispersion and integrates into normal batching with a single dosing step
  • Compatible with all Portland and pozzolanic (PPC) cements; non-toxic and non-flammable for safe site handling

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a substitute for an external membrane or tanking where significant hydrostatic head, structural cracking or movement joints are involved
  • Not compatible with High Alumina Cement (HAC)
  • Benefit depends on actually reducing mix water; at maximum dosage at least 15% water reduction is required or strength is compromised
  • Over-dosing can cause retardation of set and bleeding, so site trials are needed to fix the optimum dosage
  • Does not bridge cracks, seal construction joints or compensate for inadequate cover, poor compaction or weak curing
  • Effectiveness is contingent on consistent batching; water added in the first batch must be maintained across subsequent batches
  • As a densifying admixture it improves sound concrete but cannot waterproof an inherently porous, badly graded or poorly cured mix

Selection & best practice

Always conduct site trials to establish the optimum dosage within the 125-200 ml per 50 kg cement range before bulk use, because aggregate grading and moisture vary by source. Measure the required quantity accurately and stir it into the first or second bucket of gauging water, then add to the mix and combine thoroughly; add further water only until target workability is reached. When using the maximum dosage, deliberately reduce water by at least 15% to lock in the strength and permeability gains. Fix the total water per mix in the initial batches and hold it constant for the rest, adjusting only for changes in sand or aggregate moisture. Treat the admixture as one layer of a complete strategy: maintain adequate concrete cover, compact fully to eliminate honeycombing, cure properly, and detail construction joints and high-hydrostatic zones with appropriate Fosroc joint and membrane systems. Store in unopened containers in a dry place and use within the 12-month shelf life.

Repair and renovation

Cement-sand mortars for re-plastering damp-affected facades and wet areas, where reducing mortar permeability helps control recurrent dampness.

Frequently asked questions

Is Conplast X421IC the same as Conplast WL?
Yes. Fosroc has rebranded the X421IC chemistry as Conplast WL; it is the same lignosulphonate-based integral waterproofing liquid admixture conforming to IS:2645-2003. You may see either name on documentation and packaging.
How much Conplast X421IC should I add per bag of cement?
The dosage is 125 ml minimum to 200 ml maximum per 50 kg of cement. Site trials are recommended to fix the optimum within this range. If you use the maximum dosage, reduce mix water by at least 15% to avoid any loss of strength.
Does it replace an external waterproofing membrane?
No. It reduces the inherent permeability of sound concrete and mortar but does not bridge cracks or seal joints. For basements under hydrostatic pressure or structures with movement, use it together with an appropriate external membrane and proper joint detailing.
Will it affect the setting time or strength of my concrete?
At the recommended dosage there is no significant effect on setting time, and compressive strength is maintained at control levels, or improved if you take advantage of the water reduction. Over-dosing can retard set and cause bleeding.
Can it be used with PPC and all cements?
It is compatible with all Portland and pozzolanic cements, including PPC. The one exclusion is High Alumina Cement (HAC), which should not be used with this admixture.
What packaging and shelf life does Space Arc supply?
It is available in 125 ml, 1, 5, 20 and 200 litre containers. Shelf life is a minimum of 12 months when stored unopened in a dry place. Space Arc Engineering supplies it across Delhi NCR and pan-India.

How we position Fosroc Conplast X421IC

Within the Fosroc range, Conplast X421IC sits in the Conplast admixture family alongside water-reducing and superplasticising products such as Conplast SP430; it is the entry-level integral waterproofing choice, distinct from surface treatments like Brushbond and Nitoproof membranes, which address the structure from outside. Choose X421IC when you want to densify the concrete or mortar at the mixer for roofs, plaster, tanks and general work; pair it with an external membrane for high-hydrostatic basements rather than relying on it alone. Against competitor integral waterproofers it is broadly comparable in role to Sika’s Sika WT and Plastocrete ranges, MBS Plastiment-type admixtures, Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ (a popular site-batched IWL widely used in Indian residential work), and STP’s integral waterproofing compounds. The practical differentiator is Fosroc’s IS:2645-2003 conformance, chloride-free formulation and technical advisory support; for crystalline self-healing performance or active crack-sealing, however, a dedicated crystalline admixture or membrane from any of these brands would be the more appropriate specification. Space Arc Engineering, as an authorised Fosroc distributor, can advise on the right combination for a given exposure and supply the full Conplast and waterproofing range across Delhi NCR and India.
