BrandFosrocCategoryProtective CoatingsFormA non-toxic, two-part solvent-free epoxy resin protective coating and waterproofing lining for concrete and metal…

What is it?

A non-toxic, two-part solvent-free epoxy resin protective coating and waterproofing lining for concrete and metal surfaces, from Fosroc’s Nitocote range.

Where is it used?

Internal linings for swimming pools, reservoirs, water-retaining and water-treatment structures, tanks and pipes, plus floors and walls in dairies, kitchens, breweries, factories, workshops and showrooms.

Why use it?

It seals and protects the substrate with a hard, glossy, chemical-, corrosion- and abrasion-resistant film that is easy to clean, resists mould, and – being solvent-free and non-toxic – is safe to apply in confined and food-contact environments.

How is it applied?

Surfaces are prepared (blasted/mechanically abraded, blowholes filled), the base and hardener are site-mixed in pre-weighed ratio, then typically applied in two coats by brush, roller or airless spray to build the specified dry film thickness.

About Fosroc Nitocote EP52

Fosroc Nitocote EP52 is a non-toxic, epoxy resin protective coating and waterproofing lining engineered for concrete and metal substrates that must stand up to water, chemicals and constant cleaning. It belongs to Fosroc’s well-established Nitocote family of surface-protection products and is positioned specifically where a solvent-free, food-safe and potable-contact-friendly finish is required – environments where conventional solvent-borne coatings would be unacceptable.

In service, the cured film does three jobs at once. It acts as a waterproofing barrier or tank lining, it shields the substrate from corrosion and aggressive chemical attack, and it presents a smooth, glossy, hard-wearing surface that is simple to wash down and resists mould growth. This combination is what makes EP52 a long-standing specification choice for swimming pools, reservoirs, water-treatment works, grain silos and dairies, as well as the floors and walls of workshops, factories, kitchens and showrooms.

Because EP52 is solvent-free, it can be applied safely inside tanks, sumps, pipes and other confined spaces without the ventilation and fire-risk constraints that come with solvent-borne systems. Its high-build characteristics mean a protective thickness can be achieved in relatively few coats, and the non-toxic formulation is what allows it to be used in contact with foodstuffs and, in the Nitocote epoxy family, with potable water (subject to the relevant certification and curing regime stated on the current data sheet).

For Indian projects, Space Arc Engineering supplies EP52 as part of a complete Fosroc protective-coating and waterproofing package – including substrate repair, priming and the correct Fosroc cleaning solvents – across Delhi NCR and Pan-India. As with every Fosroc product, the exact mix ratio, coverage, film-thickness and curing data should always be confirmed against the latest country-specific Technical Data Sheet before specification or application, since values are periodically revised.

The technical insight

Nitocote EP52 is a two-part epoxy system: a resin base and a hardener supplied in pre-measured quantities that are site-mixed immediately before use. Being solvent-free, it cures by chemical crosslinking rather than solvent evaporation, which is why it can be built to high film thickness in a single pass and used safely in enclosed spaces. The Fosroc non-toxic epoxy linings in this family are formulated at essentially 100% volume solids, so there is negligible shrinkage between wet and dry film – the wet film thickness applied is close to the final dry film thickness (DFT) achieved. The non-toxicity claim is the defining technical feature: EP52 is intended for contact with water and foodstuffs, and Fosroc’s comparable potable-water linings are tested to BS 6920 (effect on water quality). The practical implication for site teams is that, like all amine/epoxy chemistries, EP52 has a finite pot life once base and hardener are combined (an exothermic reaction begins immediately), it has a defined overcoating window between coats, and it has a minimum application temperature below which cure is impaired and a surface bloom can form in cold, humid conditions – so EP52 must be programmed coat-by-coat rather than mixed and left standing.

Where it is used

  • Internal lining of swimming pools, balancing tanks and water features
  • Waterproof lining of reservoirs, service tanks and water-treatment structures
  • Protective coating for grain silos, dairies, breweries and food-processing plant
  • Corrosion protection of steel and concrete tanks, pipes and sumps
  • Easy-clean, chemical-resistant finish for factory, workshop, kitchen and showroom floors and walls
  • Lining of bunds, channels and containment areas exposed to spillage and wash-down

Key advantages

  • Non-toxic formulation – suitable for contact with potable water and foodstuffs (subject to current certification)
  • Solvent-free, so safe to apply in tanks, pipes and other confined spaces with reduced fire and fume risk
  • Resistant to a wide range of chemicals, plus corrosion and abrasion
  • Tough, smooth, glossy finish that is easy to clean and resists mould growth
  • High-build application – protective thickness achieved in few coats
  • Bonds directly to both concrete and mild steel substrates
  • Available in a range of colours for zoning, hygiene and aesthetics
  • Provides a combined waterproofing barrier and chemical-protection lining in one system

Limitations & considerations

  • Two-part epoxy with limited pot life once mixed – an exothermic reaction starts immediately, so only mix what can be used quickly
  • Has a minimum application temperature; cure slows and a white surface bloom can form in cold, humid conditions
  • Like most epoxies, not colour-stable under direct UV/sunlight – colour may shift on prolonged outdoor exposure (primarily an internal/immersed product)
  • Performance depends heavily on correct surface preparation (blasting/abrasion, blowhole filling) and achieving the specified film thickness
  • Should generally not be applied over existing/incompatible coatings without checking compatibility
  • Potable-water and food-contact use requires the specific curing regime and certification stated on the current TDS to be followed
  • Exact mix ratio, coverage and pack data are country-specific and must be verified on the latest Fosroc TDS before ordering

Selection & best practice

Treat EP52 as a system, not just a paint. Start with proper substrate preparation: concrete must be fully cured, laitance-free and grit-blasted or mechanically abraded to open the surface and expose blowholes, which are then filled with a Fosroc-approved repair/fairing mortar; steel should be blasted to a clean bright finish (e.g. Sa 2.5) and coated promptly before flash rust forms. Mix the full base and hardener together mechanically with a slow-speed jiffy mixer, scraping the sides and bottom of the container, and never split-mix or mix more than can be applied within the pot life – the can will heat up if left standing. Apply the first coat firmly, working it well into the surface to the specified wet film thickness, respect the stated overcoating window before the second coat, and verify total DFT with a wet/dry film gauge. Work above the minimum application temperature, keep relative humidity within limits, and avoid application onto surfaces with standing or running water. Clean tools immediately with the recommended Fosroc solvent, and allow the full cure period (longer for potable-water duty) before the structure is filled or returned to service. Always work to the latest country-specific Fosroc Technical Data Sheet and Safety Data Sheet.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitocote EP52 a real product?
Yes. Nitocote EP52 is a genuine Fosroc product listed on the official Fosroc website (fosroc.com) as a non-toxic, epoxy resin protective coating and waterproofing lining for concrete and metal. Country-specific Technical and Safety Data Sheets are issued by Fosroc.
Can Nitocote EP52 be used in drinking-water tanks and food areas?
It is formulated as non-toxic specifically so it can be used in contact with water and foodstuffs, which is why it is specified for reservoirs, water-treatment works and dairies. For potable-water duty you must follow the exact certification and extended curing regime stated on the current Fosroc TDS for your region before the structure is put into service.
Does EP52 need a primer, and how many coats are required?
It bonds directly to suitably prepared concrete and mild steel and is typically applied in two coats to build the specified dry film thickness. Some substrates or repair conditions may call for a Fosroc primer or fairing mortar – confirm the system build for your substrate on the current data sheet and with Space Arc Engineering’s technical team.
What surface preparation does EP52 require?
Concrete must be fully cured, sound and laitance-free, grit-blasted or mechanically abraded with blowholes filled by a Fosroc repair mortar; steel should be blasted to a clean bright standard (around Sa 2.5) and coated before flash rust forms. Surfaces must be free of standing or running water. Preparation quality largely determines coating performance.
Can EP52 be used outdoors in direct sunlight?
EP52 is primarily an internal and immersed lining. Like most epoxies it is not colour-stable under UV, so prolonged direct sunlight can cause the colour to shift, although protection is unaffected. For UV-exposed surfaces a polyurethane topcoat or a UV-stable Fosroc product is the better route – ask us for the right specification.
How is EP52 different from Fosroc Nitocote EP405, EPS or EPU?
They are siblings in the Nitocote epoxy family with different emphases: EP405 is the solvent-free, BS 6920-approved water-retaining/water-excluding lining; EPS is an epoxy-polysulphide flexible coating for tougher chemical and sewage exposure; EPU adds elastomeric flexibility. EP52 is positioned as the non-toxic, easy-clean, high-gloss general protective lining for pools, water and food/dairy environments. Space Arc Engineering can help you select the correct one for your exposure.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote EP52

Within the Fosroc range, Nitocote EP52 sits as the non-toxic, easy-clean, high-gloss general protective lining for water-contact and hygiene-critical environments. It overlaps with – and is often specified alongside – other Nitocote epoxies: Nitocote EP405 (the solvent-free, BS 6920-approved water-retaining and water-excluding lining), Nitocote EPS (an epoxy-polysulphide coating for more aggressive chemical and sewage exposure), Nitocote EPU (added elastomeric flexibility) and Nitocote EP410 (high chemical resistance for bunds and process plant). Substrate repair and priming are typically handled with the Renderoc, Nitomortar and Nitoprime ranges, and tools are cleaned with Fosroc Solvent 102. Against the wider market, credible alternatives a consultant might evaluate include Sika (e.g. Sikagard and Sikafloor epoxy linings, and potable-tank coatings), MBS/MYK schomburg systems, Dr. Fixit (Pidilite) epoxy protective coatings, and STP Limited epoxy linings – each offering broadly comparable two-part epoxy chemistry. EP52’s particular strengths in a specification are its non-toxic, food- and water-contact suitability combined with a tough, washable gloss finish, making it a natural fit for pools, reservoirs, dairies and food plants. For projects in Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies EP52 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator, and can advise on product selection, system build and on-site application against the latest Fosroc data sheets.
