Fosroc Nitocote PUW100
Water-dispersed polyurethane coating and sealer for hygienic, dustproof and chemically resistant concrete surfaces in food, dairy and process environments.
What is it?
A single-component, water-dispersed (water-based) polyurethane pigmented coating and sealer from Fosroc, applied as a thin-film protective seal over cementitious and concrete surfaces.
Where is it used?
Concrete floors and walls in breweries, dairies, commercial kitchens, food-processing plants, packaging halls, pharma areas and other environments demanding a clean, easily washed, low-odour finish.
Why use it?
It seals porous concrete to make it dustproof and impervious, resists oils, mild chemicals, abrasion and fungal attack, and is non-toxic, low-VOC and UV-stable, so it suits occupied and food-contact-adjacent areas where solvent coatings are unacceptable.
How is it applied?
Concrete is prepared and primed with Nitoproof WB Primer, then PUW100 is roller- or brush-applied in coats at roughly 10 m2/litre (100 microns WFT, ~45 microns DFT), allowing about 24 hours between coats.
About Fosroc Nitocote PUW100
Fosroc Nitocote PUW100 is a water-dispersed polyurethane coating and sealer engineered to upgrade ordinary concrete and cementitious surfaces into clean, dustproof and chemically tolerant working surfaces. Unlike conventional solvent-borne polyurethanes, PUW100 is carried in water and is co-solvent free, which keeps VOC content and odour low enough for application in occupied buildings, ventilated kitchens and hygiene-sensitive process areas. Once cured, the pigmented film bonds tightly to the substrate to create an impervious, washable barrier that keeps dust down, blocks the penetration of oils and spilt liquids, and stands up to routine foot traffic and cleaning regimes. For Indian contractors, consultants and facility owners, it occupies a useful middle ground: more durable and hygienic than a plain floor hardener or acrylic sealer, yet far simpler and lower-hazard to apply than a full epoxy or high-build PU screed. It is typically specified where a thin-film, hard-wearing, food-safe-friendly seal is needed over sound concrete rather than a structural floor topping. The cured coating is non-toxic, antifungal and UV/weather resistant, so it performs equally on internal floors and on walls or external surfaces that need a clean, durable, colour-stable finish. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Nitocote PUW100 as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with the priming, surface-preparation and specification support that this kind of thin-film system depends on for long-term performance.
The technical insight
PUW100 belongs to the water-based polyurethane dispersion (PUD) family, and understanding that chemistry explains both its strengths and its limits. Because it is water-carried and co-solvent free, film formation depends on water evaporation and particle coalescence rather than aggressive solvent flash-off, which is why ambient temperature, humidity and substrate moisture matter so much and why a generous ~24-hour interval between coats is specified. The applied film is deliberately thin: at roughly 10 m2/litre giving about 100 microns wet film and ~45 microns dry film per coat, this is a sealer-grade coating, not a high-build topping, so its job is to penetrate, seal and protect the surface zone rather than to bridge defects or carry heavy mechanical loads. The verified performance figures bear this out as a tough but thin film: abrasion loss below 35 mg, pull-off adhesion of 3 N/mm2, impact resistance of 50 cm.kg and a pencil hardness of 2H. The 3-hour pot life and 1.20 +/- 0.03 mixed density are practical working values an applicator must plan around. The single most important success factor is the priming step. PUW100 is designed to be used over Nitoproof WB Primer (a water-based epoxy primer applied at 8-10 m2/litre), which locks down the substrate, controls absorption and gives the topcoat a uniform, well-bonded base. Skip or skimp on priming over dusty, laitance-bearing or over-absorbent concrete and the result is patchy build, pinholing and early delamination, regardless of how good the topcoat is.
Where it is used
- Sealing concrete floors in breweries, distilleries and beverage plants
- Dustproofing and hygiene coating in dairies and milk-processing units
- Floors and walls in commercial and institutional kitchens
- Food-processing, packaging and bottling hall surfaces
- Pharmaceutical and clean-area ancillary floors needing a washable, non-toxic seal
- Warehouse and light-industrial floors where a low-odour, easily cleaned sealer is required
- Concrete walls and surfaces needing a UV-stable, antifungal, weather-resistant finish
Key advantages
- Water-based and co-solvent free, so low VOC and low odour, suitable for occupied and ventilated spaces
- Non-toxic cured film appropriate for food, dairy and beverage environments
- Creates a dustproof, impervious, easily cleaned and hygienic surface
- Resists oils, spilt liquids, mild chemicals and abrasion
- Antifungal, weather and UV resistant, with excellent dirt-pickup resistance
- Good measured hardness and adhesion (2H pencil hardness, 3 N/mm2 pull-off) for a thin-film sealer
- Easy roller or brush application with minimal specialist equipment
- Environmentally friendly profile compared with solvent-borne PU coatings
Limitations & considerations
- Thin-film sealer (~45 microns DFT/coat), not a high-build topping; it will not bridge cracks, level surfaces or carry heavy point loads
- Performance is highly dependent on correct priming with Nitoproof WB Primer over sound, prepared concrete
- Water-based cure is sensitive to low temperature, high humidity and damp substrates; application conditions must be controlled
- Available in a limited range of colours only
- For chemical-immersion, very heavy-traffic or thick-build duty, an epoxy or high-build PU system is more appropriate
- Recoat interval of around 24 hours lengthens project timelines versus fast solvent systems
- Requires sound, low-moisture concrete; not a remedy for structurally defective or rising-damp slabs
Selection & best practice
Treat PUW100 as a system, not a single product. Start with sound, fully cured concrete (typically 28 days), then mechanically prepare it by grinding or shot-blasting to remove laitance, curing compounds and surface contamination and to open the pores. Check and control substrate moisture before starting, because a water-based PU will not cure correctly over a damp or rising-damp slab. Apply Nitoproof WB Primer at the recommended 8-10 m2/litre and let it cure before topcoating. Apply PUW100 at the specified ~10 m2/litre (100 microns WFT) using a good-quality roller, maintaining a wet edge and uniform film, and respect the ~24-hour interval between coats; two coats give a more uniform, durable seal than one. Work within sensible ambient temperature and humidity limits, keep the area ventilated, and protect freshly coated surfaces from traffic and water until fully cured. Always confirm coverage, coats and primer against the current region-specific Fosroc TDS for your project, and verify food-contact suitability for the specific use with Fosroc technical support.

How we position Fosroc Nitocote PUW100
Within the Fosroc range, Nitocote PUW100 sits in the water-based protective coatings family alongside its mandatory partner primer Nitoproof WB Primer, and it complements Fosroc’s broader Nitocote line (such as Nitocote PU Aliphatic and Nitocote Wallguard for walls) and the Nitoflor flooring range (epoxy and PU screeds) used where a thicker, more heavily loaded floor finish is required. Choose PUW100 when the brief calls for a thin-film, low-odour, hygienic seal over sound concrete; step up to a Nitoflor epoxy or high-build PU when chemical immersion, crack-bridging, levelling or very heavy traffic is involved. Against competitor systems, credible water-based or PU alternatives commonly specified in India include Sika products such as Sikafloor water-based PU and epoxy seal coats, Dr. Fixit floor coating and sealer systems, MBS-branded protective coatings, and STP (Shalimar Tar Products) coatings. PUW100’s particular strengths are its water-based, co-solvent-free, low-VOC profile combined with non-toxic, antifungal and UV-resistant performance, which make it a strong fit for food, dairy and occupied environments. Final product selection should always be matched to substrate condition, exposure, hygiene requirements and the current region-specific TDS; Space Arc Engineering can advise on the right Fosroc system and supply and apply it across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
