BrandFosrocCategoryIndustrial FlooringFormA factory-blended dry-shake floor hardener of graded hard-wearing aggregate, Portland cement and workability…

What is it?

A factory-blended dry-shake floor hardener of graded hard-wearing aggregate, Portland cement and workability additives, broadcast onto fresh concrete to form a wear-resistant monolithic wearing surface.

Where is it used?

Heavy-traffic industrial floors: warehouses, loading bays, workshops, machine shops, car parks, distribution centres and factory production areas.

Why use it?

It roughly quadruples the abrasion resistance of the base slab, eliminates surface dusting, and cures monolithically so there is no separate topping to debond, curl or crack.

How is it applied?

Shaken by hand or spreader onto the concrete once bleed water has gone but a wet sheen remains, floated in, then power-trowelled — applied in two stages at right angles.

About Fosroc Nitoflor Roc

Fosroc Nitoflor Roc belongs to Fosroc’s Nitoflor dry-shake range, the surface hardeners specified when a plain power-floated slab simply will not survive the traffic it is about to take. It is a quality-controlled, factory-blended powder combining specially selected hard-wearing aggregate, Portland cement and additives that improve trowelling. Because it is worked into the surface of the wet concrete rather than laid as a separate screed, the hardened wearing layer becomes an integral part of the slab — there is no bond line to fail, no thin topping to shrink away from the base. The result is a dense, low-porosity surface that resists the grinding, gouging and point-loading that destroy ordinary trowelled concrete within a few years.

For Indian projects, the appeal is practical. Contractors are already placing the floor slab; Nitoflor Roc adds the wearing course inside that same operation, so there is no return visit, no keying-in of a topping, and no additional slab thickness to accommodate. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and pan-India, and because correct timing on fresh concrete is unforgiving, we back the material with application guidance and trained-applicator support so the floor performs to its published figures rather than the site’s luck on the day.

The technical insight

The performance comes from where the hardener sits and what it is made of. The graded aggregate in Nitoflor Roc is far harder than the sand and gravel in structural concrete — the mineral grade carries a hardness of 8 on the Mohs scale — so the very surface that takes the wheel loads and steel-wheeled traffic is armoured with particles that resist cutting and polishing. Broadcasting it dry onto fresh concrete lets moisture wick up from the slab and cement it in place, so the aggregate is locked into the top few millimetres exactly where abrasion happens, not diluted through the full depth. Tested on a Taber abrasion machine to ASTM C944, the treatment improves the abrasion resistance of concrete by roughly 300 to 500 percent depending on how heavily it is applied. Densifying and closing the surface during trowelling also drives out the porosity that would otherwise let a floor dust, absorb oil and spall — which is why a correctly finished Nitoflor Roc floor stays sound and clean long after an untreated slab has worn to exposed aggregate.

Where it is used

  • Warehouse and distribution-centre floors carrying forklift and pallet-truck traffic
  • Loading bays, trucking lanes and ramps subject to heavy point-loading and impact
  • Manufacturing and engineering workshops, machine shops and assembly areas
  • Multi-storey and basement car parks needing a hard, dust-free deck
  • Cold-storage, logistics and e-commerce fulfilment floors run around the clock
  • Power stations, heavy industry and process plant subject to constant abrasion
  • Food, beverage and agricultural buildings where a dense, cleanable surface is essential
  • Bay edges and saw-cut control joints given a reinforced strip for extra wear protection

Key advantages

  • Improves the abrasion resistance of the base concrete by about 300-500% (ASTM C944, Taber)
  • Cures monolithically with the slab, so there is no topping to debond, curl or crack
  • Supplied ready to use — no site batching, gauging or additives required
  • Applied within the same pour, adding no slab thickness and no second visit
  • Produces a dense, low-porosity surface that resists dusting, oil and grease
  • Hard-wearing mineral aggregate rated 8 on the Mohs scale for the wearing course
  • Non-metallic mineral grade will not rust or stain when the floor gets wet
  • Available in a range of colours to brighten working areas and mark zones

Limitations & considerations

  • Must be applied to fresh concrete at the right moment — too early with bleed water present, or too late once the surface has set, both compromise the floor
  • Not suitable for concrete containing calcium chloride or with more than 3% air entrainment
  • Should not be used where the floor is exposed to acids and their salts, which attack the Portland cement matrix
  • Adding water to ‘wet out’ the surface during application is detrimental and lowers the finished quality
  • Correct results depend on a well-designed base slab (min 300 kg/m3 cement, w/c below 0.55) and skilled power-float finishing
  • For the most aggressive abrasion or impact duty, a heavier-duty emery or metallic hardener is the better specification

Selection & best practice

Get the base concrete right first: minimum 300 kg/m3 cement content, a water:cement ratio below 0.55 (Conplast water reducers help here), and an on-site slump of 75-100 mm, compacted with care at bay edges. Do not vacuum-dewater. Start the shake only when the slab has stiffened enough that light foot traffic leaves a 3-6 mm imprint and the bleed water sheen has gone but the surface is still damp. Apply in two stages: broadcast two-thirds of the material evenly, let it darken as it absorbs moisture, float it in, then apply the remaining third at right angles and float again. Never sprinkle water to help wetting — it ruins the finish. Give bay edges and saw-cut joints a reinforced 100 mm strip at around 5 kg/m2. Power-trowel to a dense, closed finish, then cure immediately with a Fosroc Concure curing membrane, or, indoors, with taped polythene sheet. Pigmented floors need extra care to hold the recommended rate everywhere and avoid shade variation.

Industry use cases

Warehousing & Logistics

Forklift wheels and pallet-truck traffic grind ordinary slabs to dust within a season. A Nitoflor Roc wearing surface holds up under continuous racking-aisle and loading-bay traffic while staying clean and low-maintenance.

Manufacturing & Engineering

Machine shops and assembly floors take dropped tooling, steel-wheeled trolleys and swarf. The dense, hard surface resists gouging and impact and shrugs off the oil and grease that would soak into bare concrete.

Car Parks

Multi-storey and basement decks need a hard, dust-free, non-porous surface that survives tyre scuffing and turning loads at ramps — applied in the same pour with no added deck thickness.

Cold Storage & Food Logistics

Round-the-clock fulfilment and cold-chain floors demand a cleanable, low-porosity surface that will not dust into product zones; the non-metallic mineral grade will not rust or stain when washed down.

Heavy Industry & Power

Power stations, process plants and heavy-industry buildings put constant abrasion and point loads on their floors — the treatment lifts the base slab’s wear resistance several-fold to extend service life.

Frequently asked questions

Is Nitoflor Roc a topping or a coating I apply later?
Neither. It is a dry-shake hardener broadcast onto the concrete while it is still fresh, then floated and trowelled in. It becomes part of the slab in the same pour, so there is no separate layer to bond, debond or maintain.
How much material do I need per square metre?
The standard rate is 3-5 kg/m2, applied in two stages — around 2-3 kg/m2 first, then 1-2 kg/m2 at right angles. Bay edges and joints get a reinforced strip at about 5 kg/m2. Hitting the specified rate matters; going lower reduces abrasion resistance and evenness of finish.
How much stronger is the floor compared with plain concrete?
Tested to ASTM C944, the treatment improves the abrasion resistance of concrete by roughly 300 to 500 percent depending on coverage, and finished hardener cubes typically reach about 70 N/mm2 at 28 days. In practice that means far longer service life under heavy traffic.
When is the right moment to apply it?
Start when the slab has stiffened enough that light foot traffic leaves a 3-6 mm imprint and the bleed-water sheen has just disappeared but the surface is still damp. Too early traps bleed water; too late and it will not bond properly. Do not add water to help it wet out.
Will it work on any concrete mix?
The base slab needs a minimum 300 kg/m3 cement content, a water:cement ratio below 0.55 and 75-100 mm slump. Avoid it on concrete containing calcium chloride, mixes above 3% air entrainment, and floors exposed to acids or their salts.
Does Space Arc supply it pan-India and support the application?
Yes. Space Arc Engineering is an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and pan-India, and because timing on fresh concrete is unforgiving we provide application guidance and trained-applicator support alongside the material.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor Roc

Within Fosroc’s Nitoflor dry-shake family, Nitoflor Roc is the everyday industrial-duty mineral hardener; for the most aggressive abrasion and impact — trucking lanes, steel-wheeled traffic, heavy plant — step up to Fosroc Nitoflor Emeritop, an emery-aggregate hardener, while Fosroc Nitoflor Hardtop is the closely related non-metallic option. Pair any of them with a Fosroc Concure curing membrane to lock in performance, and where a floor instead needs a bonded high-build wearing screed or a chemically resistant finish, look at Fosroc’s Nitoflor epoxy and polyurethane floor systems. For projects standardised on other brands, Space Arc also supplies equivalent dry-shake hardeners and industrial floor toppings from MC-Bauchemie and the wider industrial-flooring range.
