What is it?

A four-component, water-miscible, self-levelling epoxy resin floor topping applied at 2-5 mm to give a smooth, dense, matt, water-vapour-permeable seal on concrete.

Where is it used?

Warehouses, garages, pharmaceutical and medical labs, food & beverage and food-processing areas, kitchens, light-industrial units and high-footfall spaces such as malls and convention centres.

Why use it?

It is damp-tolerant and can be laid on green concrete, contains no VOC and has no odour, levels itself to a seamless hygienic finish, and resists abrasion, impact and a wide range of chemicals.

How is it applied?

The substrate is grit-blasted, cleaned and primed with Nitoprime WB; the pre-weighed components are mixed on site, poured at 2-5 mm and spike-rolled to release air and even out the finish, curing in about 24 hours for foot traffic.

About Fosroc Nitoflor SL2050

Fosroc Nitoflor SL2050 is a water-based, self-levelling epoxy floor topping engineered for the realities of Indian construction programmes, where slabs are often young, ambient humidity is high, and finishing crews cannot afford to wait weeks for concrete to dry out. It is a four-component system – base, colour pack, hardener and filler – supplied in pre-weighed packs so that the correct ratios are fixed at the factory and site error is minimised. Once mixed and poured, the material flows out under its own weight to a smooth, dense, matt surface in the 2-5 mm thickness band, sealing the slab and giving a clean, easily maintained working floor. Because the resin chemistry is water-miscible rather than solvent-borne, the cured film is water-vapour permeable. That single property is what sets SL2050 apart from conventional 100% solids epoxies: vapour can pass through the coating rather than building up underneath it, so the topping can be laid on damp substrates and on green concrete as young as one day old without the blistering and delamination that trapped moisture normally causes. For a distributor-applicator working to tight handover dates across Delhi NCR and the rest of India, that translates into fewer programme delays and far fewer moisture-related callbacks. The finished floor is hard (Shore D 73), takes pedestrian traffic in about 24 hours at 23°C, carries no VOC, and is non-tainting – a genuinely useful combination for food, pharmaceutical and beverage environments where odour, contamination and downtime all matter. Space Arc Engineering supplies and applies Nitoflor SL2050 as an authorised Fosroc partner, pairing the material with the correct Nitoprime WB primer and trained applicators.

The technical insight

The defining technical feature of Nitoflor SL2050 is its water-vapour permeability, quantified on the datasheet at a water-vapour transmission of 1.7 g/h/m² and permeance of 2.43 x 10⁻⁷ g/Pa.s.m² at 3.83 mm. Conventional solvent-free epoxy toppings form an effectively impermeable membrane, so any residual or rising moisture in the slab builds osmotic pressure beneath the coating and eventually lifts it. By using a water-miscible epoxy that cures to a breathable film, SL2050 lets that moisture escape, which is why Fosroc rates it for application on damp substrates and on green concrete only one day old, with a fast 24-hour cure to foot traffic at 23°C. This permeability is a deliberate design trade-off rather than a limitation: the same breathable matrix that tolerates moisture is also the reason the product is not recommended for permanently immersed or constantly wet conditions, and why it should not be subjected to flowing water during application and cure. Mechanically the cured topping is a credible light-to-medium-duty floor – 35 N/mm² compressive strength at 23°C (rising to 40 N/mm² when cured at 35°C), 12 N/mm² flexural, 8 N/mm² tensile, 2.5 N/mm² bond to concrete and 250 mg abrasion loss under the Taber CS17/1 kg/1000-cycle test – with a service range of -20°C to +70°C at 2 mm. Understanding this moisture-versus-immersion trade-off is the key to specifying SL2050 correctly.

Where it is used

  • Warehouse and distribution-centre floors subject to pedestrian and light vehicular traffic
  • Garage, workshop and light-industrial unit floors
  • Pharmaceutical manufacturing areas and medical/clinical laboratories
  • Food-processing, dairy, edible-oil and food-preparation areas
  • Food & beverage and soft-drink/bottling plant floors
  • Commercial kitchens and canteens
  • High-footfall public areas such as shopping malls and convention centres
  • Resurfacing of green or damp newly-cast concrete slabs where programme time is tight

Key advantages

  • Damp-tolerant and water-vapour permeable – can be applied to damp substrates and green concrete (one day old) without blistering
  • Fast turnaround – foot-traffic ready in roughly 24 hours at 23°C, with full cure in 21 days
  • Water-miscible with no VOC and no odour – safer for occupied and food/pharma environments and easier to satisfy on hygiene-sensitive sites
  • Self-levelling – flows to a smooth, dense, seamless matt finish that is easy to clean
  • Good abrasion and impact resistance with Shore D 73 hardness for light-to-medium-duty service
  • Broad chemical resistance to water, alkalis, salt solutions, oils, lubricants, soft drinks, fruit juices, dairy and pharmaceutical products
  • Non-flammable and non-tainting, with resistance to bacterial and fungal growth
  • Pre-weighed four-component packs reduce on-site mixing error
  • Available in a range of colours for zoning and demarcation
  • Tools clean off with plain water when wet, simplifying site housekeeping

Limitations & considerations

  • Not for immersed or permanently wet conditions – the breathable film is designed to pass moisture, not to be submerged
  • Should not be applied below 5°C or where relative humidity exceeds 95%, and must not see flowing/running water during application or cure
  • Not resistant to higher concentrations of mineral acids, organic acids or strong oxidising agents
  • Light-to-medium duty only – heavy forklift, steel-wheel or impact-loaded floors need a heavier-duty PU screed or trowel-applied epoxy screed instead
  • Reflective cracking can occur if the substrate cracks or moves after application; all known expansion joints must be carried through the topping
  • Short pot life – 1 hour at 23°C and only 30 minutes at 35°C – so mixing, plant and labour must be organised for continuous placement
  • Low-temperature curing (5-10°C) greatly extends times – up to 10 days to pedestrian traffic and 30 days to light traffic
  • Requires a sound, fairly smooth, correctly prepared and Nitoprime WB-primed substrate; surface irregularities can telegraph through the finish

Selection & best practice

Specify Nitoflor SL2050 only on horizontal, structurally sound slabs that are light-to-medium duty. Prepare the substrate by light grit-blasting; remove oil and grease by hot compressed-air treatment followed by a proprietary degreaser, then prime with Nitoprime WB applied as a thin continuous film (coverage 6-7 m²/litre) and worked into the surface, avoiding ponding – apply within its open time (4 hours at 23°C, 2 hours at 35°C). Mix the four components in sequence with a slow-speed heavy-duty drill until streak-free and homogeneous, then pour and spread at 2-5 mm. As a planning figure, coverage is 0.5 m²/litre at 2 mm, so a 12-litre pack covers roughly 12 m² at 2 mm (proportionally less as thickness increases) – allow extra for wastage and porous substrates. Spike-roll immediately after pouring and keep rolling until all air is released and colour is uniform; applicators should wear spiked shoes. Provide good ventilation and air movement so the water can evaporate as the resin cures. Because pot life is just 1 hour at 23°C (30 minutes at 35°C), mobilise enough material, plant and labour for continuous placement, and in hot weather store materials cool, keep equipment shaded and avoid the hottest part of the day. Carry all known expansion joints through the topping. Maintain the floor with rotary scrubbing and a water-miscible alkaline cleaner or hot-water washing up to 50°C.

Frequently asked questions

Can Nitoflor SL2050 really be applied to new or damp concrete?
Yes. Because it is a water-miscible epoxy that cures to a water-vapour-permeable film, Fosroc rates it for application on damp substrates and on green concrete as young as one day old. Moisture passes through the coating instead of building up beneath it, which is the usual cause of blistering with conventional solvent-free epoxies. The slab must still be sound, clean, correctly prepared and primed with Nitoprime WB, and it must not be subjected to flowing water during application and curing.
What thickness and coverage should I plan for?
SL2050 is designed for 2-5 mm in a single self-levelling coat. The theoretical coverage is 0.5 m²/litre at 2 mm, so a 12-litre pack covers roughly 12 m² at 2 mm and proportionally less as thickness increases. These are theoretical figures – allow for wastage and for porous or uneven substrates, which reduce practical coverage. The Nitoprime WB primer covers 6-7 m²/litre.
How soon can the floor be used after laying?
At 23°C the topping accepts pedestrian traffic in about 24 hours and reaches full cure in 21 days. At 35°C foot traffic is possible in around 15 hours with full cure in 10 days. At low temperatures (5-10°C) curing is much slower – allow up to 10 days to pedestrian traffic and 30 days to light traffic – so cold-weather programmes must build in this delay.
How chemically resistant is SL2050, and where does it stop?
It is fully resistant to a wide range of chemicals including water and sea water, alkali and salt solutions, soft drinks, fruit juices, motor oils and lubricants, cosmetics, pharmaceutical and dairy products and edible oils. It is not resistant to higher concentrations of mineral acids, organic acids or strong oxidising agents, and is not recommended for permanently immersed conditions. For aggressive chemical exposure, a different Fosroc system should be specified – request the detailed chemical-resistance data from us.
Is SL2050 suitable for heavy forklift or steel-wheeled traffic?
No – it is a light-to-medium-duty topping (Shore D 73, compressive strength 35 N/mm² at 23°C). It suits pedestrian and light vehicular traffic in warehouses, garages, food, pharma and commercial areas. For heavy forklift, pallet-truck or steel-wheel loading, or thermal-shock and washdown-heavy environments, a heavier-duty polyurethane screed or a trowel-applied high-build epoxy screed is the correct choice, and we can advise on the right Fosroc Nitoflor system.
Does Space Arc Engineering supply and install Nitoflor SL2050 across India?
Yes. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator we supply Nitoflor SL2050 in 12-litre packs together with the matching Nitoprime WB primer, and we provide trained application crews across Delhi NCR and Pan-India. We can help with substrate assessment, system selection, thickness and coverage estimates and on-site execution to Fosroc’s recommended procedure.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor SL2050

Within Fosroc’s own Nitoflor range, SL2050 occupies the water-based, damp-tolerant, light-to-medium-duty self-levelling niche – its key differentiator is breathability for fast-track work on green or damp slabs. Where a job needs a solvent-free, higher-strength self-levelling epoxy on a dry, mature slab, Fosroc’s solvent-free Nitoflor self-levelling toppings are the natural alternative; where the floor must take heavy forklift traffic, thermal shock or aggressive washdown, a Fosroc Nitoflor polyurethane screed or a trowel-applied epoxy screed is more appropriate; and for dust-proofing or surface hardening only, a Nitoflor floor hardener or seal coat is the lighter, lower-cost route. For static-control areas, Fosroc’s Nitoflor conductive/dissipative systems apply. Against the wider market, SL2050 competes most directly with Sika’s water-based Sikafloor self-levelling epoxy toppings and with the MBCC/Master Builders Solutions MasterTop epoxy range; for the most demanding chemical, thermal-shock and heavy-duty food/pharma floors, Master Builders Solutions Ucrete polyurethane-concrete is the recognised premium benchmark, sitting a clear step above any water-based epoxy in service severity. The honest position is that Nitoflor SL2050 is a strong, cost-effective choice specifically when moisture tolerance and programme speed matter on light-to-medium-duty floors – and a deliberately wrong choice for immersion, strong-acid exposure or heavy mechanical loading, where the systems above should be specified instead. Space Arc Engineering can compare these options objectively and recommend the right system for the actual service conditions.
