Fosroc Proofex 3000MR
Self-adhesive, aluminium-cored membrane that waterproofs below-ground structures while resisting methane, radon and carbon dioxide ingress.
What is it?
A cold-applied, self-adhesive composite membrane built from a polymer-modified bitumen compound, an aluminium gas-barrier core and a high-strength polymer backing film, supplied with a solar-reflective finish.
Where is it used?
Below-ground waterproofing and gas protection for basements, podiums, lift pits, retaining walls, tunnels and brownfield/landfill-adjacent buildings where ground gases are a hazard.
Why use it?
It delivers two functions in one sheet, a Type A waterproof barrier plus a verified methane/radon/CO2 gas barrier, removing the need for a separate gas membrane and speeding up the below-ground envelope.
How is it applied?
Surfaces are primed with Proofex Primer, then the self-adhesive membrane is rolled onto the prepared substrate with 75 mm side and 150 mm end laps, detailed at corners and penetrations, and protected with Proofex Protection Board before backfilling.
About Fosroc Proofex 3000MR
Fosroc Proofex 3000MR is a high-performance, cold-applied self-adhesive membrane engineered for the dual problem that defines difficult ground in India today, water and ground gas attacking a structure at the same time. It is constructed as a multi-layer laminate: a polymer-modified bitumen self-adhesive compound bonded to a thin aluminium foil core, all carried on a tough, high-strength polymer backing film with a solar-reflective top surface. The bitumen compound bonds the sheet to the substrate and seals the laps; the aluminium core is the element that gives the product its “MR” character, blocking the passage of methane, radon and carbon dioxide; and the polymer film delivers puncture resistance and dimensional stability so the membrane behaves predictably on site. The reflective finish reduces heat build-up while the sheet is temporarily exposed during construction, which matters on Indian sites where slabs can sit open for weeks. For consultants, architects, structural engineers and procurement teams, Proofex 3000MR is the membrane to specify when a basement or below-ground box is being built on reclaimed land, near old landfill, over decomposing fill, or in any location flagged for radon or carbon-dioxide risk in a contaminated-land or geo-environmental assessment. It carries genuine third-party validation, holding a British Board of Agrement (BBA) certificate (Cert No. 22/6063) and meeting the relevant European membrane standards, which makes it straightforward to write into a specification that needs to satisfy a lender, an insurer or an international design code. Within the wider Fosroc system it sits alongside Proofex Primer, Proofex Protection Board, Proofex Detail Strip and Proofex Total Tape, so the membrane, its accessories and its detailing all come from one warranted source rather than being assembled from mixed brands.
The technical insight
The performance of Proofex 3000MR rests on the aluminium foil sandwiched inside the laminate. Ordinary self-adhesive bituminous membranes waterproof well but are relatively permeable to small gas molecules; methane and radon will diffuse through bitumen and most polymer films over time. A continuous metallic foil is effectively impermeable to those gases, which is why the published methane permeability is less than 5 cc/m2 x 24h x atm, an order of magnitude tighter than what a plain bitumen sheet achieves. This is also why lap discipline is non-negotiable: the foil is only as good as the seal between adjacent sheets, so the 75 mm side and 150 mm end laps, and the use of Proofex Total Tape and Detail Strip at junctions, are what convert individual sheets into a single gas-tight envelope. The trade-off of an aluminium core is that the sheet must be detailed, not stretched, around complex geometry, hence the design emphasis on pre-formed corners, top-hats and detail strips rather than forcing the membrane to conform. Thickness is nominally 1.2 mm or greater to EN 1849-1, and the membrane’s tensile capacity (roughly 195 N/50 mm longitudinal and 200 N/50 mm transverse) gives it enough robustness to survive normal handling, but it is still a membrane and not a board, so the Proofex Protection Board step before backfill is a structural part of the system rather than an optional extra.
Where it is used
- Waterproofing and gas-protecting basement raft slabs and retaining walls to BS 8102 Grade 2 and Grade 3 below-ground environments
- Brownfield, ex-landfill and reclaimed-land developments where a contaminated-land assessment flags methane and/or carbon dioxide
- Radon-affected sites requiring a verified radon barrier under the building footprint
- Lift pits, tanks, podium decks and other water-excluding structures needing a continuous tanking membrane
- Below-ground car parks and plant rooms in commercial, residential and mixed-use developments
- Tunnels, cut-and-cover structures and infrastructure boxes exposed to aggressive ground salts and ground gas
Key advantages
- Combines waterproofing and methane/radon/CO2 gas protection in a single sheet, removing the need for a separate gas membrane
- Cold-applied and self-adhesive, with no torch or hot works, which simplifies site safety approvals and speeds installation
- Continuous aluminium core gives very low gas permeability (methane < 5 cc/m2 x 24h x atm)
- Third-party validated with a BBA certificate (22/6063) and compliance with EN 13707 / EN 13969, easing specification and lender sign-off
- Resistant to ground water, soluble sulphates and chlorides, protecting concrete from aggressive ground salts common in Indian soils
- Solar-reflective finish reduces heat gain while the membrane is temporarily exposed during construction
- Backed by a complete Fosroc accessory range, primer, protection board, detail strip, top-hats and total tape, for warranted detailing
Limitations & considerations
- Requires Proofex Primer and a clean, dry, sound substrate; performance drops on damp, dusty or poorly prepared surfaces
- Self-adhesive bond and lap integrity are temperature-sensitive, so application in very cold or wet conditions needs care and follow the current TDS for the minimum substrate temperature
- The aluminium core means the sheet is detailed around geometry, not stretched; complex junctions depend on correct use of detail strips, top-hats and tape
- Needs Proofex Protection Board before backfilling, an exposed membrane is vulnerable to mechanical damage during construction
- As a barrier (Type A) system it is sensitive to workmanship; any unsealed lap or puncture compromises both the water and gas barrier
- Gas protection design must be set by a qualified assessment (e.g. to BS 8485); the membrane is one component of a verified gas-protection scheme, not a standalone guarantee
Selection & best practice
Always begin from a current ground-gas and contaminated-land assessment so the gas-protection scheme is correctly graded before the membrane is specified. On site, prime the substrate with Proofex Primer and allow it to become tack-free, then apply the membrane to a clean, dry surface maintaining 75 mm side laps and 150 mm end laps with firm roller pressure to remove air. Detail all internal and external corners, pipe penetrations and construction joints with Proofex Detail Strip, Top Hats and Total Tape before continuing the main lay so the gas barrier remains continuous. Inspect and, where the specification requires, integrity-test the laps before covering. Install Proofex Protection Board promptly to shield the membrane from follow-on trades and backfill. Insist on a Fosroc-trained applicator and keep batch records and photographs for the warranty file. Always confirm the current Technical Data Sheet for your region before finalising the specification, as published values are periodically updated.

How we position Fosroc Proofex 3000MR
Proofex 3000MR occupies a specific niche in the Fosroc Proofex family: it is the answer when a project needs waterproofing and ground-gas protection together. Where Proofex 3000 covers standard below-ground waterproofing, the ‘MR’ variant adds the verified methane, radon and CO2 barrier via its aluminium core, making it the right call on brownfield and radon-risk sites. For fully-bonded HDPE tanking that resists water tracking, Fosroc’s Proofex Engage is the companion system, while liquid-applied needs are met by Brushbond and the Nitoproof range, and movement joints by the Nitoseal / Thioflex sealant lines, all of which Space Arc Engineering stocks. Specifiers comparing brands will weigh it against Sika (Sikaplan, SikaProof self-adhesive systems and Sika gas membranes), STP Limited’s tanking and gas-protection membranes, MBS, and Dr. Fixit’s waterproofing range; each has credible products, but Proofex 3000MR’s combination of a single self-adhesive sheet, an aluminium gas core, BBA certification (22/6063) and a fully warranted Fosroc accessory ecosystem is its strongest positioning argument. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator serving Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering can supply the membrane with its full primer, protection board and detailing kit, provide current TDS and certificates for your tender, and arrange trained application, which is what ultimately protects the warranty on a below-ground gas-protection scheme.
