MC-Bauchemie MC-PowerFlow 1160
A next-generation PCE superplasticizer built for fast-turnaround precast yards and self-compacting concrete pours across Delhi NCR and pan-India
What is it?
A liquid, polycarboxylate ether (PCE) based high-range water reducer from MC-Bauchemie’s PowerFlow family, engineered to deliver very low water-cement ratios with excellent flow retention.
Where is it used?
Ready-mix concrete batching plants, precast and prestressed concrete factories, self-compacting concrete (SCC) pours, fair-faced architectural concrete, and high-strength/high-performance concrete mixes.
Why use it?
It cuts water demand sharply at moderate dosage, mixes in fast, builds early strength quicker than conventional superplasticizers, and leaves a cleaner, blemish-free surface that needs less cosmetic patch work.
How is it applied?
Dosed directly during batching at 0.8-2.0% by weight of cement for flow concrete (1.5-3.0% where high early strength is the priority), ideally added after the mixing water with enough mix time to let it unfold its full plasticizing action.
About MC-Bauchemie MC-PowerFlow 1160
Most RMC plants and precast yards in the NCR region have, at some point, run into the same problem: a superplasticizer that gives good slump on paper but turns sluggish the moment site temperatures climb past 35°C, or that needs an uncomfortably long mixing cycle to actually “wake up” in the drum. MC-PowerFlow 1160 was developed by MC-Bauchemie specifically to shorten that gap between lab performance and site reality. It’s a synthetic superplasticizer built on the company’s own polycarboxylate ether polymer chemistry, and its defining trait is how little time it needs in the mixer to deliver its full water-reducing, flow-enhancing effect – which matters a great deal when a batching plant is trying to turn around truck-mixers every few minutes during peak pours.
What makes it a genuinely useful product for the Indian precast and ready-mix market, rather than just another PCE on the shelf, is the early-strength behaviour built into the polymer design. Precast producers casting elements that need to come out of formwork the next morning, or prestressing yards working to a strand-release schedule, are usually the first to notice the difference between a “flow-only” superplasticizer and one tuned for early strength gain. MC-PowerFlow 1160 sits in the latter category, while still being flexible enough for fair-faced architectural pours, self-compacting concrete, and general high-workability ready-mix – covering a fairly wide span of the concrete production business from one bottle.
The technical insight
The chemistry is a comb-shaped PCE polymer: a negatively charged backbone that adsorbs onto cement particle surfaces and shifts their surface potential, combined with long side chains that physically hold particles apart through steric hindrance. That combination does two things conventional naphthalene- or melamine-based superplasticizers can’t match as efficiently – it lets water reduction happen at a lower dosage, and it keeps particles mobile for longer without needing extra water, which is how the product reaches EN 206-style F5/F6 flow classes at an unchanged w/c ratio. Because the polymer disperses cement particles rather than just lubricating them, mixing energy is used more efficiently, which is the practical reason MC-PowerFlow 1160 needs comparatively short mixing times to reach full effect – a real advantage on a busy batching line where every extra minute of drum time is a cost.
Where it is used
- Self-compacting concrete (SCC) for congested reinforcement and complex formwork
- Precast and prestressed concrete elements needing early strength for fast formwork/strand release
- Fair-faced (architectural) concrete where surface blemishes and cosmetic patching must be minimised
- Ready-mix concrete supplied to Delhi NCR and pan-India sites, including long-haul and pumped pours
- High-strength and high-performance concrete mixes at low w/c ratios
- General concrete needing high workability (F5/F6 consistency) without added water
- Combination use with other MC-Bauchemie admixtures, such as the Centripor SK foaming agent, for specialised mixes
Key advantages
- Significant water reduction at moderate dosage, improving both economy and durability of the mix
- Relatively short mixing time needed to unfold full plasticizing effect, useful on high-turnover batching lines
- Enhanced early strength development, helpful for precast demoulding and formwork-cycle schedules
- Excellent fluidity – consistency can be pushed to F5/F6 without extra water
- Low cohesiveness, which generally helps pumpability on longer concrete runs
- Produces high-quality, homogenous concrete surfaces, cutting down on cosmetic-putty rework
- Free of corrosion-promoting components, with chloride content held below 0.1% by weight
- Compatible with other MC admixtures for combined performance needs (e.g. lightweight/foamed concrete)
Limitations & considerations
- Slight retarding side effects are possible at higher dosages or lower ambient temperatures – not a flaw so much as something to plan around with trial mixes
- Performance is dosage-sensitive; overdosing can push retardation or bleeding beyond what a site expects, so the manufacturer itself recommends job-site trials rather than blind dosing
- The manufacturer’s published data sheet (edition January 2013) does not itself quote clause-level IS/BS/EN compliance figures, so specifiers who need certified test-house compliance documentation should request current test certificates through Space Arc rather than relying on the TDS alone
- As a liquid admixture it needs to be stored in unopened packaging away from rain, direct sun, heat and frost – performance can drift if storage conditions are ignored
- It’s a plasticizing/early-strength admixture, not a dedicated set accelerator or retarder – projects needing precise set-time control should pair it with MC’s purpose-built accelerator or retarder range
- Like all PCE superplasticizers, compatibility with a given cement, sand and aggregate combination varies regionally, so results from one plant don’t automatically transfer to another without a trial batch
Selection & best practice
Treat the 0.8-2.0% (flow concrete) and 1.5-3.0% (high early strength) dosage bands as starting points, not fixed numbers – MC-Bauchemie’s own data sheet is explicit that site trials should confirm the optimum dosage for the specific cement, aggregate and weather conditions in play, since results can vary noticeably between sources. Add MC-PowerFlow 1160 after the mixing water wherever possible, and allow enough drum time for the polymer to fully disperse before judging slump – judging flow too early in the cycle is a common reason sites think a PCE “isn’t working” when it simply hasn’t had time to activate. If dosing directly into a transit-mixer at site rather than at the batching plant, follow proper addition and re-mixing procedure rather than tipping it straight into an already-discharging drum. Store drums and cans under cover, off direct sun and away from frost, and use stock within the 12-month shelf life from the manufacture date printed on the pack.

Industry use cases
Ready-mix concrete plants
Used as the primary high-range water reducer for M30-M60 grade mixes supplied around Delhi NCR, where fast batching turnaround and consistent flow matter as much as final strength.
Precast and prestressed concrete units
Chosen for its early-strength profile, which supports next-day demoulding and strand-release schedules in precast yards without pushing dosage into problematic retardation.
Infrastructure and metro-type pours
Deployed where concrete has to stay pumpable over longer lines or wait times on site, since low cohesiveness and sustained flow reduce the risk of line blockages.
Architectural / fair-faced concrete
Applied on exposed-finish elements where surface quality is scrutinised, cutting down the amount of cosmetic surface repair needed after form-strike.

How we position MC-Bauchemie MC-PowerFlow 1160
Within MC-Bauchemie’s own PowerFlow range, MC-PowerFlow 1160 sits in the precast/early-strength segment; ready-mix operations chasing longer slump retention on hot, long-haul deliveries are often better served by the MC-PowerFlow evo series, while projects needing a straightforward slump-retaining plasticizer without the early-strength push can look at MC-PowerFlow Perma. Retarding superplasticizer duties for hot-weather or mass-pour concreting are typically covered by MC-Bauchemie’s MC-TechniFlow line instead. Space Arc, as an authorised MC-Bauchemie distributor and applicator for Delhi NCR and pan-India, stocks this family together so specifiers can match the right PowerFlow variant to the pour rather than defaulting to one SKU for every job. Outside the MC-Bauchemie stable, the closest genuine equivalent is Fosroc’s Auramix 400, another PCE-based high-range superplasticizer built for self-compacting and pumped concrete with extended workability retention – a reasonable alternative where a project’s specification already references Fosroc by name or where Auramix 400’s stated IS 9103 / ASTM C494 Type G compliance documentation is a procurement requirement.
Fosroc Auramix 400 — A specifier already standardised on Fosroc, or one who needs an admixture with IS 9103 / ASTM C494 Type G compliance stated directly on the data sheet, might reach for Auramix 400 instead of MC-PowerFlow 1160.
