What is it?

A ready-to-use liquid admixture based on polymer viscosity regulators, dosed into fresh concrete to improve its pumpability and internal cohesion.

Where is it used?

On sites where concrete has to travel far or high, or where the mix is lean, gap-graded or short on fines and tends to block, segregate or spike pump pressure.

Why use it?

It lets marginal or long-line mixes pump smoothly at lower pressure, cuts blockages and pipe wear, and keeps the concrete cohesive without changing its hardened strength.

How is it applied?

Added to the fresh mix after the mixing water, then wet-mixed for at least 90 seconds so the polymers can fully develop their effect before pumping.

About Sika Pump

Sika Pump is a universal liquid admixture designed to solve one of the most frustrating problems on any pumped-concrete job: a mix that simply does not want to move through the line. It works on the fresh concrete’s rheology rather than its strength. A solution of polymer viscosity regulators raises the internal cohesion, plasticity and flexibility of the mix, so the concrete behaves as a more uniform, lubricated mass instead of a mixture that wants to separate under pressure. The practical result is smoother, steadier pumping, fewer jerky surges at the placing end, and noticeably lower pumping pressure for the same concrete.

For engineers and pump operators in India, the value shows up most on the difficult mixes that day-to-day construction throws up: concretes with variable or insufficient fines, low cement content, or a poor particle-size distribution that gives the mix little water-retention capacity. These are exactly the mixes that bleed, segregate and choke a line, or that force the pump to work at pressures that shorten the life of the pump and pipeline. By compensating for the missing fine fractions and holding the mix together, Sika Pump turns a marginal, blockage-prone concrete into one that can be placed reliably over long horizontal runs and up tall pours. It is chloride-free and safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete, and it does not compromise the strength of the hardened concrete.

The technical insight

The core of the product is a set of water-soluble polymer viscosity regulators. When they hydrate in the mix water, these long-chain polymers thicken the paste phase and bind the free water and fines into a more cohesive, lubricating matrix around the aggregate. Two things happen as a result. First, the paste holds the aggregate in suspension, so the mix resists the segregation and bleeding that normally occur when a lean or gap-graded concrete is forced through a pipe under pressure. Second, that same cohesive, plasticised paste forms a lubricating boundary layer against the pipe wall, which is what actually lowers the pumping pressure and smooths out the flow. The effect is dosage-dependent and builds with mixing time, reaching its maximum only after roughly 90 seconds of wet mixing, which is why adequate wet-mixing time is not optional. Because the polymers modify flow behaviour rather than react with the cement chemistry, they leave the setting characteristics and hardened strength of the concrete essentially unaffected.

Where it is used

  • Long-distance horizontal pumping where line friction and pressure loss are the limiting factor
  • High-rise vertical pours that demand steady pressure and no line separation
  • Lean concrete mixes and low-cement-content mixes that lack the fines to pump cleanly
  • Gap-graded or poorly graded mixes with a shortage of fine aggregate fractions
  • Mass concrete placements where continuous, uninterrupted pumping is essential
  • Commercial and residential building work using standard site-batched or ready-mix concrete
  • Mixes prone to bleeding and segregation that need improved cohesion for pumping
  • Situations where reducing pump and pipeline wear is a maintenance priority

Key advantages

  • Reduces pumping pressure, so marginal mixes can be placed at lower load on the pump
  • Smooths out jerky, surging pumping into a steady, controllable flow
  • Prevents segregation and bleeding by holding the mix cohesive under pressure
  • Compensates for missing fine fractions in lean or gap-graded concrete
  • Extends the service life of pumps and pipelines by cutting internal wear
  • Chloride-free and safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
  • No adverse effect on the hardened strength of the concrete
  • Compatible with all cement types and easy to dose as a liquid on site

Limitations & considerations

  • Exact dosage must be established by trial mixes for your specific materials; the ranges are a starting point, not a fixed recipe
  • Full effect develops only after about 90 seconds of wet mixing, so short mixing cycles will underperform
  • It is a pumping aid, not a water reducer or plasticiser; use the right admixture family if your goal is strength or slump retention
  • Must be added to the wet mix after the mixing water, never to the dry mix
  • Performance depends on a sound base mix design; it cannot rescue a fundamentally unpumpable or badly proportioned concrete
  • Storage outside the +10 C to +40 C range, or exposure to frost or direct sun, can affect the product

Selection & best practice

Always run a preliminary trial with your actual materials to fix the dose: use the lower band, around 0.2 to 0.4 percent by weight of cement, when the main aim is simply to increase cohesion and stop segregation, and move up towards 0.5 to 1.5 percent by weight of cement when you also need to cut pump pressure or make up for missing fines. Add Sika Pump to the concrete after the mixing water has gone in, never to the dry mix, and give it a full wet-mix cycle of at least 90 seconds so the polymers reach maximum effect before the concrete reaches the pump. Store the drums between +10 C and +40 C, out of direct sunlight and protected from frost, and use within the 24-month shelf life. On long or high pours, prime the line as usual and keep the pumping continuous once cohesion is dialled in.

Industry use cases

High-Rise Construction

Keeps concrete cohesive and the line steady on tall vertical pours where pump pressure and separation are the biggest risks.

Infrastructure & Mass Concrete

Supports long, continuous placements and long horizontal line runs on bridges, rafts and large slabs without blockage.

Ready-Mix & Site Batching

Rescues lean or variable-fines mixes so they pump reliably, useful where aggregate grading is inconsistent.

Commercial & Residential Buildings

Makes everyday building concrete pump smoothly and reduces pump and pipeline wear across routine project work.

Frequently asked questions

What does Sika Pump actually do to the concrete?
It uses polymer viscosity regulators to raise the mix’s internal cohesion and plasticity. That keeps the concrete together under pressure, stops it segregating in the line, and lubricates the flow so you can pump at lower pressure.
How much should I add?
Use 0.2 to 0.4 percent by weight of cement to increase cohesion, and 0.5 to 1.5 percent by weight of cement when you also need to reduce pump pressure or make up for missing fines. Always confirm the exact dose with a trial mix on your own materials.
When and how do I add it?
Add it to the fresh concrete after the mixing water has been added, never to the dry mix, then wet-mix for at least 90 seconds so it reaches full effect before pumping.
Will it change the strength of the hardened concrete?
No. It modifies the flow behaviour of the fresh concrete rather than the cement chemistry, so it has no adverse effect on hardened strength.
Is it safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete?
Yes. Sika Pump is chloride-free and safe to use in reinforced and prestressed concrete.
What pack size does it come in and how long does it last?
It is supplied in a 230 kg drum and has a shelf life of 24 months from production when stored between +10 C and +40 C, away from frost and direct sunlight.

How we position Sika Pump

Sika Pump sits in the specialty-admixture family alongside Sika’s water reducers and superplasticisers such as the Sikament and SikaPlast ranges; those control water and workability, while Sika Pump specifically targets pumpability and line behaviour, and the two are often used together on demanding pours. If your primary need is high water reduction with pumpable, cohesive concrete rather than a dedicated pumping aid, a complementary option from our Fosroc range is Conplast SP430, an SNF superplasticiser formulated to reduce segregation and bleeding and improve pumpability. For pump-line priming, pair Sika Pump with a suitable slurry or priming product rather than relying on the admixture alone. Talk to our technical team for the right combination for your mix design and site conditions.
