What is it?

A clear, surfactant-based liquid admixture from Sika, engineered for semi-dry and no-slump concrete such as paver blocks, kerbstones and masonry units.

Where is it used?

Machine-made, instant-demould concrete products in block-making plants: interlocking pavers, hollow and solid blocks, kerbs, channels, pipes, manholes and roof tiles.

Why use it?

It lets a stiff, low-cement mix compact fully under vibration and pressure, so units demould without slumping and harden into denser, stronger, better-coloured products with less batch-to-batch variation.

How is it applied?

Dosed at 0.1-0.6% by weight of cement, added with the mixing water or near the end of the mix cycle in the block machine’s pan or planetary mixer.

About Sika SikaPaver HC-1

Paver-block and kerbstone production runs on a different logic to ready-mix concrete. The mixes are deliberately dry, low in cement, and compacted the instant they hit the mould by high-frequency vibration and press pressure, then demoulded immediately so the machine can start the next cycle. In that world, ordinary water-reducing plasticisers do little, because there is barely any free water to reduce. What the mix actually needs is help sliding the aggregate particles past one another so it packs tightly, and help releasing cleanly from the mould without tearing the freshly-formed green units. This is the exact job SikaPaver HC-1 is built for.

It is a surfactant-based liquid rather than a superplasticiser. Working at a dosage of 0.1 to 0.6% of cement weight, it disperses the cement, cuts the internal friction between grains, and introduces a controlled network of very fine air pores that act almost like ball-bearings during compaction. The result is a mix that flows into every corner of the mould, compacts to a higher density, and holds its shape the moment the mould lifts. For Indian block plants juggling coloured and grey production, tight cycle times and variable local aggregates, that translates into steadier output, cleaner faces and fewer rejects at the demould stage.

The technical insight

In a semi-dry mix the limiting factor is not water content but inter-particle friction and trapped voids. Because there is so little free water, the cement paste cannot fully coat and lubricate the aggregate, so the grains lock against each other and resist compaction, leaving air voids that later become weak points. SikaPaver HC-1’s surfactant chemistry lowers the surface tension at the particle interfaces and disperses the cement more evenly, so under vibration the grains rearrange into a tighter packing. At the same time it entrains a fine, uniformly distributed pore structure that improves mould-filling and gives the fresh unit enough internal cohesion (green strength) to stand up on its own the instant it is demoulded. Denser packing at the green stage carries straight through to the hardened unit: less void space means higher compressive strength, a smoother closed surface that takes colour more consistently, and better resistance to frost and de-icing salt because there are fewer capillary channels for water to penetrate.

Where it is used

  • Interlocking concrete paver blocks in grey and coloured finishes
  • Hollow and solid concrete masonry blocks and bricks
  • Kerbstones, edgings and channel units for roads and landscaping
  • Precast concrete pipes and manhole/drainage sections
  • Concrete roof tiles and flags
  • Machine-made units requiring instant demoulding and fast cycle times
  • Semi-dry and no-slump precast produced on egg-layer and stationary block machines

Key advantages

  • Improves mould-filling so stiff, low-water mixes reach every corner of the mould
  • Raises green strength for safe, distortion-free demoulding straight off the machine
  • Compacts the mix to a higher density, lifting hardened compressive strength
  • Produces smoother, closed surfaces with more even and consistent colouring
  • Improves resistance to frost and de-icing salts by reducing capillary porosity
  • Reduces batch-to-batch quality variation for steadier, more predictable output
  • Works effectively in low-cement-content mixes, supporting mix economy
  • Simple to dose with the mixing water, needing no change to plant equipment

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a compaction aid, not a water-reducing superplasticiser, so it will not add flow to wet, high-slump concrete
  • Benefits depend on correct dosing within the 0.1-0.6% window; overdosing can entrain excess air and lower strength
  • Results are sensitive to mix design, aggregate grading and machine settings, so plant trials are essential before full production
  • It aids compaction but cannot compensate for a poorly graded mix or an under-powered vibration/press cycle
  • Supplied only in 230 kg drums, which suits plant-scale use but not small one-off jobs
  • Must be protected from frost and intense sunlight; product left exposed can be compromised before use

Selection & best practice

Always establish the correct dosage by plant trial within the 0.1-0.6% of cement range, starting low and increasing until you get clean mould release and full compaction without over-aeration. Add the admixture with the mixing water, or introduce it near the end of the mix so it disperses evenly, and hold a consistent mixing time after dosing since this varies with mixer type. Keep water content, aggregate grading and vibration/press settings stable once dialled in, because the compaction benefit is only as reliable as the mix and machine behind it. Store drums sealed, off the ground, shaded from direct sun and protected from frost, and use within the 12-month shelf life. Judge the result at the demould stage and on hardened test units, not by mix appearance alone.

Industry use cases

Paver Block Manufacturing

Coloured and grey interlocking paver plants use it to get full compaction and clean colour on the wearing face while demoulding instantly for fast cycle times.

Concrete Block & Brick Plants

Hollow and solid masonry block producers rely on it to raise green strength so units stack straight off the machine without slumping or edge damage.

Roads & Urban Infrastructure

Kerbstone, edging and channel-unit makers use it for denser, stronger, sharper-edged units that hold up to traffic loading and weathering.

Precast Drainage & Pipes

Manufacturers of concrete pipes and manhole sections use it to compact stiff mixes fully, cutting voids and improving durability of buried components.

Roof Tile & Flag Production

Concrete roof tile and paving flag lines benefit from smoother closed surfaces, consistent colour and improved frost and de-icing resistance.

Frequently asked questions

Is SikaPaver HC-1 a superplasticiser?
No. It is a surfactant-based compaction aid for semi-dry, no-slump mixes. It reduces inter-particle friction and improves mould-filling and demoulding, rather than reducing water in wet, flowable concrete the way a superplasticiser does. For high-slump precast where water reduction is the goal, a PCE superplasticiser is the right tool instead.
What dosage should I use?
The recommended range is 0.1% to 0.6% by weight of cement. The exact figure depends on your mix design, aggregates and machine, so establish it by plant trial, starting at the lower end and adjusting until you achieve clean release and full compaction without over-aerating the mix.
How and when do I add it to the mix?
Add it with the mixing water or introduce it near the end of the mixing cycle so it disperses evenly through the mix. Maintain a consistent mixing time after dosing, as the time needed varies with the type of mixer in your plant.
Will it work with coloured paver blocks?
Yes. By improving compaction and producing a smoother, denser closed surface, it helps deliver more even and consistent colour across production, which is one of the main reasons coloured-paver plants use it.
Does it meet Indian standards?
It corresponds to EN 934-2 Table 5 and IS 9103, the relevant standard for concrete admixtures in India, which supports its use on specified and quality-controlled projects.
What pack size and shelf life does it come in?
It is supplied in 230 kg net drums with a 12-month shelf life from the date of production, provided it is kept in original, unopened packaging and protected from frost, intense sunlight and contamination.

How we position Sika SikaPaver HC-1

SikaPaver HC-1 sits within Sika’s dry-cast concrete range and is the specialist choice for semi-dry, instant-demould production. It is not interchangeable with a superplasticiser: where a plant needs water reduction and high early strength in wetter precast, the answer is a PCE water-reducer such as Sika’s ViscoCrete range rather than a compaction aid. For coloured pavers, pair it with Sika’s oxide-compatible colour and surface-protection systems. Space Arc also supplies parallel admixture lines from other brands we distribute (Fosroc, MC-Bauchemie, Dr. Fixit, UltraTech and Master Builders Solutions), so we can match the exact function you need, whether that is a compaction aid for stiff block mixes or a superplasticiser for flowable precast; talk to our technical team for a plant-trial recommendation.
